THE TRUTH REVEALED
“Dear child, I’ll be fine. You better get on home now.”
Laura’s weary thoughts go back to her sickly grandmother as she used her keys to unlock their mansion’s front door. True, they do have a dozen or so servants who she could call before she got home so someone could open the door for her. However, she was well-aware that their house staff wakes up at around 5 am to prepare breakfast and begin their chores. And since it’s almost midnight, the lovely dark-haired young woman did not have the heart to bother their loyal paid help when she can easily use her key to let herself in.
After all, she was quite capable of caring for her own needs…
The eldest daughter of the Fabian family was about to open her bedroom suite’s door when she heard a noise in the family library. Suddenly thinking that she can read a favorite novel to help her sleep, Laura Anna decided to take a slight detour before going back to her room.
Upon opening the study door, however, she deeply regretted her decision…
“Maritess… Adonis… What is the meaning of this?”
Her younger sister Maritess was already almost naked while lying on the large velvet couch in the middle of the library. On top of her was Laura’s shirtless platinum-haired fiance!
“Oh s**t, don’t you know how to knock, big sis?” crossly exclaimed Laura’s blond sibling as she tried to hide her state of undress and failing miserably.
“Laura, we thought you were already asleep,” stated Adonis tonelessly, as if he didn’t mind being found out by his girlfriend.
“Yes, I can see that. And just so you both know, I was with grandma at the hospital since early evening,” explained the oldest daughter, still feeling extremely upset with her shocking discovery.
“So how is the senile hag, sister?”
“Don’t call her that, Mari,” immediately responded Laura while holding her aching head. “And I just can’t believe you two! You’re both acting as if what you’ve done isn’t a big deal…”
Adonis was quick to butt in with a cynical sneer, “Actually, I’m rather glad you found out about us, woman. It saves me the effort of explaining why I want to break off our engagement.”
The dark haired lass felt as if the ground beneath her has opened wide and swallowed her whole. She wanted to scream at her lying cad of a fiance and at her spoiled and envious sibling who was sitting beside him. However, to her dismay, Laura found herself unable to do so.
That was the one weakness she had that she wishes with all her heart to change: It doesn’t matter how terrible any deed done against her is. If the one who did it is someone she loves or cares about , Laura would not hold a grudge against them. She would eventually forgive them and let it pass...
And of course, we all know for a fact that the ones who has the greatest capability to hurt are the very ones whom we love the most!
Which, regrettably, is the very case now…
“B-but why?” stuttered Laura, her voice hoarse and airy. “We were supposed to get married, Adonis! How could you?”
“Well, your parents told me I’m better of with your younger sister because they’ve chosen her to run your family’s company. After all, she’s the one with the knack for business and has been your father’s protege for years now.”
“And I need a good decent man who will assist me in closing deals. It’s sooo hard to be a lady in a man’s world, sis. I would need Adonis more than you and our mom and dad knows that,” explained Maritess in an indifferent tone, not caring how pale Laura was at that point.
The brown-eyed young woman took a deep breath to steady herself, however she still felt her knees trembling.
Mom and Dad, encouraged this? I can’t believe it! This can’t be happening…
A sudden thought squirmed its way into the curvaceous lady’s disconcerted mind and she dared voice it out, “What about your arranged marriage to the son of our parent’s main financier? Aren’t you supposed to have the wedding by the end of the month? Please don’t tell me you’re reneging on that agreement, Mari. It’s the only way for us to pay for grandma’s operation…”
“I no longer want to be married to whoever that guy is. First of all, I don’t know him. And second, I already found the love of my life so who needs that damn loser?” cut in Maritess with a haughty toss of her head.
“Our grandma does, I’m afraid,” reminded Laura in a low, whispering voice. “Her operation is vital for her to survive at least a year more.”
“Well, if you’re so cornered about that old bag then why don’t you marry that unknown nobody then?” cuttingly snapped the youngest Fabian as Adonis shamelessly kissed the blond girl’s neck in front of his former fiance.
Laura looked at Mari, too astonished o say anything at first. But the longer she thought about it, the more the sudden suggestion made sense…
Sadly, my sister is right. Why shouldn’t I marry that stranger? After all, my engagement is off and Maritess no longer wants to push through their arranged wedding. Also I love my granny and marrying our financier's sole heir is the only way we can pay for her operation. I’ll talk to our parents tomorrow and tell them that I’m willing to take Mari’s place and be the one to marry the billionaire’s son instead.
