CHAPTER 20: NO RECORD OF HER

944 Words
KAEL'S POV Something wasn't right and the more I thought about it, the less I liked it. It had been days since Kiara told me about the vision days since she admitted she knew nothing about Chloe's family. At first, I told myself I was overthinking Chloe had been by Kiara's side for years. She loved her and Protected her. And judging by how exhausted she'd looked while Kiara was unconscious, she genuinely cared. But that didn't explain one thing. No one knew who she was.Not really and that bothered me. I sat behind my desk in my office while three of my most trusted warriors stood before me. "Anything?" I asked. None of them answered immediately. Which wasn't a good sign. Finally, Liam stepped forward. "Alpha." My eyes met his. "Talk." “We looked into every details but we found nothing." "What do you mean nothing?" He exchanged uneasy glances with the others. "We mean nothing." "No birth records." "No family names." "No relatives." "No photographs." "No history." "No trace." My eyes narrowed. "What about her parents?" "Nothing." "Siblings?" "Nothing." "Nothing." "What are you saying?" Liam swallowed. "We're saying…" He hesitated. "Chloe doesn't exist." Silence. Complete silence. My jaw clenched. "Impossible." "We thought so too so we searched and again and again." Still nothing. It was as though someone had erased her. Or… As though she had never existed. My blood ran cold. No. That wasn't possible.People didn't just appear out of nowhere.Everyone had a past.Everyone. "Continue looking." "Alpha—" "Continue." "Yes, Alpha." As they left, I remained seated. Thinking. Remembering. Kiara's vision. Chloe's strange reaction. The fact that she had always appeared whenever Kiara needed her.The fact that even Kiara knew nothing about her. And now this,No records. No family. Nothing. I growled. Danger. Not confirmed. But possible. And I wasn't willing to gamble with my mate's life Or my children's. KIARA'S POV I smiled as I folded the tiny clothes Kael had somehow bought without me noticing. Seriously. The man had become obsessed. I laughed softly. Yesterday, I'd caught him arguing with the twins because they kept kicking me at three in the morning. "Daddy needs sleep too." The memory made me giggle. The door opened. My smile widened. "Kael—" Then I froze. Something was wrong. His expression. He looked serious.Too serious.Immediately, I stood. "What happened?" He closed the door behind him. "Sit down." Fear entered my heart. "What happened?" "It's nothing urgent." "Kael." He sighed. "It's about Chloe." My smile vanished. "What about her?" He sat beside me. "I had some people investigate her." My eyes widened. "You what?" His expression remained calm. "Kiara, listen to me." "No." "Why would you do that?" "Because I needed answers." "Answers to what?" "Who she is." I stared at him. "What?" "Kiara, no one knows anything about her." I laughed. "That's ridiculous." "It's true." "No." "We searched." "We?" "The rest of my men." "We checked every place." I frowned. "So?" His voice became quieter. "We found nothing." "What do you mean?" "No records." "No parents." "No relatives." "No history." Nothing. I blinked. Then laughed. "That's impossible." "I know." "But it's true." "No." He grabbed my hand. "Kiara." "No." I stood up. "No." His eyes widened. "Kiara—" "No!" Tears filled my eyes. "Stop it!" He froze. "Stop trying to make her into some villain!" "I'm not—" "Yes, you are!" My voice echoed through the room. "First you questioned her." "Now you're spying on her?" "What's next?!" "Kiara, listen” "No!" Anger and hurt exploded inside me. "Chloe has always been there for me!" "When no one else was!" "She stayed beside me while I was unconscious, she loves me Kael” "She loves these babies!" "She'd die for us!" His eyes softened. "I'm not denying that." "Then why are you doing this?!" "Because I love you!" His voice thundered. Silence. We both froze. His chest rose and fell heavily. "Because I love you." His voice cracked. "And because I love our children." "And because if there is even the slightest chance—" "There isn't!" "There might be!" "No!" Tears streamed down my face. "I trust Chloe!" "Completely!" "She's my sister!" "And you don't come between family!" Pain flashed across his face. "I'm trying to protect you." "And I'm telling you she would never hurt me!" He closed his eyes briefly. "Kiara." "No." I pointed toward the door. "I don't want to hear it." His eyes widened. "What?" "I said stop." "You're wrong." "You're paranoid." "And I won't let you ruin my friendship." His face fell. For a moment… He looked hurt. Really hurt. But he nodded slowly. "As you wish." He stood. "Kael—" "No." His voice was calm. Too calm. "I understand." He walked to the door. Before leaving, he turned. "I hope with everything inside me that you're right." My anger faltered. Because there was no hatred in his eyes. No jealousy. No accusations. Only fear. Fear for me. Fear for our children. And love. So much love. Then he left. And suddenly… I didn't feel victorious. I felt guilty. Because deep down… Very deep down… A small voice whispered inside my heart. What if he's right? I quickly shook my head. No. Never. Not Chloe. Not my Chloe. Outside the room, Kael leaned against the wall. His eyes closed. His wolf growled in frustration. And from the shadows at the end of the hallway… A pair of sad eyes watched him. Chloe. She had heard everything. Every word. And tears filled her eyes. Because for the first time in years… Someone had finally started asking the right questions. And Kael Was getting dangerously close to the truth.
