Chapter Four “You think this will end without consequences?” Makayla whispered to herself, pacing her bedroom. Her hands shook, the weight of the last night pressing down on her chest. Lucas’s words replayed in her mind, relentless: “I can’t ignore my feelings anymore.” And yet, her best friend’s betrayal lingered, sharp and raw, cutting deeper than she wanted to admit. Her phone buzzed. She froze. Lucas: I’m outside. Please, Makayla. Let me talk. Her stomach twisted. Part of her wanted to open the door, to let him in, to feel that dangerous pull between them again. But the other part screamed, No. You can’t. Not now. Not like this. Before she could decide, there was a knock. Hesitant, small, but familiar. “Makayla?” The voice was soft, unsure Lucas. She ignored it. But the knocking persisted. Her chest tightened. She wanted to run, but the temptation was unbearable. Finally, she opened the door a c***k. Lucas stood there, coat slightly wrinkled, scarf falling loose around his neck. His eyes held that familiar mix of desperation and honesty that always made her weak. “I’m not leaving until you talk to me,” he said quietly. Makayla closed the door fully, shaking her head. “I don’t know if I can. I don’t know what I want anymore.” “You want me,” he said simply. His words hit her like a punch to the gut. “No,” she whispered, though her body betrayed her. Her hands were clammy; her knees weak. “I I can’t.” “Yes, you can,” he insisted. “You already do. That’s why you’re trembling. That’s why you keep looking at me like I’m the only thing keeping your heart from breaking.” Makayla’s throat tightened. She wanted to scream, to cry, to run. But before she could speak, her phone buzzed again. Amira: We need to talk. Now. Her chest sank. The last thing she wanted was another confrontation. And yet, she couldn’t ignore it. She needed answers answers Amira hadn’t given her before. She grabbed her coat and stepped outside. The cold hit her like fire, burning her lungs, but it felt good to be moving, to escape the chaos inside her head. Lucas followed silently, staying a careful step behind her. She didn’t look at him, didn’t let herself, but she could feel the tension radiating off him like heat. “You’re going to make this harder than it has to be,” he murmured. Makayla stopped and turned, finally facing him. Her eyes were wild, desperate. “Do you have any idea how much I’ve lost already? How much I’ve hurt? I trusted you. I trusted her. And now… everything is messed up!” He stepped closer, eyes pleading. “I know. I know, Makayla. And I hate myself for it. But I can’t hide how I feel anymore. I can’t keep pretending I don’t want you.” Her knees nearly gave out. “And Amira? What about her?” His jaw tightened. “I don’t know. I don’t have the answers. All I know is you. All I know is us, right now.” Makayla’s chest ached. The words were simple, but they carried a weight she couldn’t ignore. She wanted to hate him, but she couldn’t. She wanted to leave, but her feet felt frozen to the ground. Then, a car pulled up, tires crunching gravel. Amira stepped out, coat tight around her body, eyes burning with fury. “You’re coming with me,” she said to Makayla, voice low but dangerous. Makayla’s breath caught. “No. I don’t” “Now,” Amira snapped, taking a step closer, hand outstretched. “We’re talking. You’re not running this time.” Lucas opened his mouth to protest, but Makayla held up a hand. “I I have to go with her. I need answers. I need to know the truth.” Amira smirked, but there was no warmth in it. “Finally. Maybe you’ll start seeing the real world.” The drive was silent at first, tension thick between them. Makayla stared out the window, mind racing. She wanted to ask questions, to yell, to fight, but something told her the conversation waiting ahead would break her in ways she couldn’t yet imagine. Finally, Amira spoke. “You think I wanted this to happen? You think I wanted to lose control of everything? You have no idea what I’ve been carrying, Makayla. No idea.” Makayla’s eyes narrowed. “Try me.” Amira exhaled sharply. “Lucas told you some things but not everything. I didn’t just get involved in my father’s business. I’ve been protecting him. Protecting us. And maybe maybe I crossed a line. But I didn’t lie to hurt you. I lied to survive.” Makayla’s chest tightened. “Survive? By pretending nothing was wrong? By letting me fall for him? By letting him fall for me?” Amira’s eyes glistened. “I didn’t know how to stop it. I didn’t think I thought you two were stronger than this.” Makayla laughed bitterly. “Stronger? I trusted both of you! And now I feel like the world is collapsing!” Amira reached forward, almost touching her hand. “I never wanted to hurt you. I loved you as my best friend. But I had to protect everyone. Including him. And yes… that included you.” Makayla flinched at the words. Protect her? Or protect him? She didn’t know anymore. She wanted to scream. She wanted to cry. She wanted to run. Lucas appeared at the doorway of the café they had stopped near, eyes dark with something unspoken. “Makayla…” he murmured, voice catching. “Don’t shut me out. Please.” Makayla’s heart ached. The pull between them was unbearable, yet the betrayal, the secrets, and Amira’s revelations left her reeling. Amira turned toward Lucas, her face sharp. “You need to leave. Now. This isn’t your fight anymore.” Lucas hesitated, torn. “Makayla… I can’t just walk away. Not like this.” Makayla took a step back. “Lucas… stop. Don’t. Not here. Not now.” The tension was unbearable. Each breath, each glance, each heartbeat felt magnified. Then Amira’s phone buzzed. She glanced at it, eyes widening. “Oh no” “What?” Makayla demanded. “It’s him. My father. He knows something. He’s coming here. Now.” Makayla froze. “Coming here? What do you mean?” Amira’s hands shook. “I don’t know. He’s… he’s going to find out what’s happened. And if he does none of us are safe.” Lucas’s hand gripped Makayla’s shoulder. “We need to move. Now. All of us.” Makayla’s mind raced. Run? Hide? Fight? None of it seemed like enough. The world she thought she understood was gone, ripped apart by love, lies, and dangerous secrets. And as she looked at Lucas, looked at Amira, she realized something terrifying which was the hardest choice wasn’t who to trust, or who to love. It was whether to survive or let love destroy everythin
