Chapter 3 The next morning, Leo made it to class extra early and went about setting up his station with even more precision than usual. He sharpened his knives, got his towels and once satisfied that everything was in order, opened a massive cookbook and began studying the recipes he would be working on that week. He was debating taking French in hopes of being able to read some of the great French cookbooks in their native tongue—he was certain there was much lost in translation. While these tasks kept his hands busy, his mind was elsewhere. He would be reading about the perfect scrambled eggs and suddenly he would see Dock’s face. The next he would be sharpening a blade and in the sound of steel against the whetstone, he heard the sound of Dock’s boots against the gravel of The Birches
