Briar POV
I'm not sure who is on the phone but based on the change in Derek's expression, whatever they're saying isn't good. When he hangs up, I can tell he needs a minute to steady himself, so I don't push. Without warning, he wraps his arms around me and buries his head in my neck.
As his shoulders start to shake, I realize he is silently sobbing. My heart breaks for this man who is always so strong. I know it was Ray, so it has to be about his mother. I hate that she hurts him so much.
I know how it feels to have a so-called parent who isn't there for you the way a parent should be. I can't imagine how a mother can be so callous and cold to her own child. I know that I would do anything to make sure my child is happy and safe. Mary only cares about her status and money.
