Episode1
CLAIRE My heart constricted inside my chest and my muscles clenched. Several emotions ran through me at once as I stood there with shaky legs, watching the scene play out in front of me. It could have easily been a dream, that would have been the little ounce of hope I would have held onto, but it wasn’t. The coldness of the metal handle of the door rested upon my fingers with which I held the door open, the moaning sounds of pleasure from my sister Elizabeth felt too real, too real to be ignored, too real to be a dream. Aaron’s groans of ecstasy, that same sound he made when I pleasure him, hearing it while he was with another woman seemed to have been the last stroke to break the camel’s back. The flower bouquet I held with my other hand came crashing down on my shoes as I lost hold on it. Only then did the two lovebirds in front of me seperate, only then did they become aware of my presence in the room. There could have still been a chance to save my marriage, there could have still been a tiny chance for me to forgive and act like it never happened, only if Aaron had just apologised as soon as he saw me. But the outright look of nonchalance in his eyes as soon as they met mine broke me. “A… Aaron…” my lips trembled as I called out his name and took a step back, my shoes crushing the pieces of red petals scattered all over the ground, the same petals I had thought were for me on my way up the staircase. “You came back earlier than you should have, I suppose.” He told me as he straightened himself. He made no attempt to get off the bed. I sucked in a breath as I took in the scene with my eyes again, I could be missing something. But they were stark naked! I turned to Liza who had a smirk on her face. If there was any atom of remorse for what I had caught them doing, they were doing a perfect job hiding it. I was still trying to understand the scene in front of me when Aaron lifted himself off the bed, not bothering to throw on his shorts, he walked over to the shelve at the other side of the room. My eyes were wide open as he walked back to me holding some papers. “I guess this had been made easy for me, then.” He cleared his throat as he dumped the documents on the table. “Come on in, Nora.” My curiosity grew as I took shaky steps into the room. “What are these?” I extended shaky hands to reach out for the documents on the table. “Take a look yourself.” He smirked. The trip from my standing position to the middle of the room where the table stood seemed like the longest journey I had ever embarked on, tension hung in the air like fluttering waves of strong winds, threatening to throw me over the edge of a cliff. My eyes grew wider, the palpitating sound of my heart increased as I began to read out the words engraved in the pages of the documents. “Divorce papers?” My voice shook as I raised my eyes to meet Aaron’s. “Yes,” he spoke softly. He had walked over to the wardrobe to grab a pair of pants. Liza sat on the bed, unmoving, although the smirk plastered on her face spoke of a lot. “Aaron, it’s our one month anniversary today?” I said as I felt ripples of sweat start to run down my spine. “One month, and enough time for me to decide that I don’t want to be with you anymore.” Aaron told me in a low mocking tone, looking over his shoulders. “Sign the papers, Nora:” Liza’s jeering voice came from her place on the bed, where she sat unmoving, the same bed I had shared with my husband for the past one month. “I’ve always known you to have enough self worth, and trying to hold on when he clearly doesn’t want you doesn’t reflect your personality.” I couldn’t believe my ears. My heart pumped harder inside my chest and I felt my muscles start to clench as I began to go over the memories of the past few days in my head. Everything began to play back and it was then that I realised that I had been played. Just last week, Aaron had managed to convince me to sign up ownership to my company and multiple streams of income under my possession to him. And out of love, I had done it, I had handed over all the fortune that had been left to me by my mother to my husband. My eyes stung harder as I felt the tears start to force its way out. “Nora!” Aaron’s sharp, impatient voice called out and pulled me out of my multiple streams of thoughts. I blinked rapidly as I raised my tear filled eyes to look at him. “Sign the papers, Nora.” Aaron’s voice came out more like an order now, the sarcasm that once played in his eyes had turned into a deadly glare as he held me down with his eyes. I searched my insides for the next step to take, but nothing was forthcoming. I was at a crossroads and I had no idea where all of this was leading. Overwhelmed by the tension, I took a step forward snd reached out for the pen that had been placed on the paper, and with shaky hands, I grabbed the pen and scribbled my signature signature on the divorce papers. A tear slipped from my eyes, onto the paper as I watched the small scribbling on the paper that signalled the end of my one month old marriage. “It was nice doing business with you, Nora Swansea.” I heard Aaron’s voice pull me out of my state of daze. My heart palpitated inside my chest as I straightened up to look into the eyes of the man I had once loved, who had professed nothing but love to me in the last one month, well, until this very moment. Without another word, I quickly turned around and scurried out of the house. I could hardly remember hailing a taxi, I could hardly remember getting into the back seat with tear filled eyes, but the next time I remembered, I was standing in front of the hotel reception trying to enquire why I couldn’t be granted access into the hotel that I owned.
