While playing around he had fist bumped my chest and that had knocked some air out of my lungs, all I could feel at the moment were his eyes and my heart beat. He was conscious of us, of me, at least that’s what I felt from his aura and his scent was so nice, minty misty and mushy. I liked it mushy like a deep forest scent. It felt like his natural scent. I had to keep myself from being a creep around him, best I could do was look at him with puppy eyes as his eyes sparkled at me as well. That day I slept with my feelings in a complex circle always reaching the same conclusion.
He's just being nice because I am a freaking nanny. Yeah right!
The day came when Princess Anna’s in-laws sent us a maid. She had bob cut with purple hair and was so thin like a porcelain doll and she didn’t talk much. We got introduced in the babies’ room and she looked around as if she was investigating the place for welfare center or something.
“Hey Ashley?” I called to her and she turned around to look at me, “What?” she said. She had that air of uneasiness around her.
“Princess Anna was saying you could settle in and rest for today, you travelled a long way. You can start your duties tomorrow.” I said. She looked at me like I had somehow offended her with my words.
“No, it’s okay. I’ll start them today. I’m not tired.”
“Ah, okay. Well, let me know when you want to know about anything.”
“I won’t be needing your help, you can go.”
“Actually, the thing is I’m the main nanny, you’re a side partner, and you’ll be assisting me, not the other way around. Stop behaving like you’ll be dealing with the babies alone.”
“Aren’t you the one being rude? We’re meeting for the first time. Stop acting like you own the babies or something.”
“I, well, I’m sorry if I offended you but that wasn’t my intention. Rest up, we’ll meet later.” I excused myself and went to Princess Anna’s room to escape the awkwardness. She was the first person I was feeling anxious around. Even around Kayden I hadn’t felt this anxious. She was making me pull out my hair mentally. I groaned as I picked up Hansel from his resting place. Anna looked at me concerned.
“You good?” She asked.
“Yup. Just thinking about something.” I replied.
“Let me guess, is it about the new maid by any chance?”
“It might be. I don’t know. I’m feeling squeamish about the whole situation. She seems stern.” I said.
“Yeah, no s**t. Servants back home are trained and tested in strict competitive environments before they can apply for the work in the palace. Unlike here, we just take a personality test and decide where to allocate them.”
“Hmm, makes sense.”
The day went by quick and nightfall approached. I was going to the babies’ room when I saw a mysterious figure lingering outside the babies’ room. I hid behind the pillar. The man was whispering something to himself.
“I have to get him today. He’ll not live to see another day. I’ll get him by his neck, don’t worry.” The man sounded driven. He walked away looking around suspiciously. I quickly went in the room handing Lily the milk bottles and excused myself trying to follow the man. His walk was sped up as he tried covering his track, I couldn’t see his face, but there was a tattoo on his arm, of a compass and an arrow. He walked directly in the servant room and I lost him as some walked out with beer and cupcakes.
“Hey, did you see him?” I asked a young servant.
“See who?” he asked back looking around all confused.
“Where are you taking these?” I pointed to the cupcakes and the beer in his hands.
“Prince Kayden is having a meet-up with some of his colleagues.”
“Where?”
“In the main hall. He’s having a party.”
“Alright, I’ll take those, he called for me a while ago.” I said taking the cupcakes from him.
“Oh…”
“You sure you didn’t see anyone in black enter the room just now?”
“No.” He said scratching his head.
I felt a pang of panic in my chest as I hurried to the main hall with the cupcakes. I opened the door a bit and it was loud as f**k inside the hall. The sound was blasting the glass off the windows, men in casual wear were loitering here and there eating and gossiping among themselves. I caught a glimpse of the same tattoo arm and my breath got caught in my throat.
He’s wearing servant uniform now? What’s he up to???
I rushed to find Kayden as he stood there between some of his friends. He appeared to be talking casually as he was handed a red glass.
Maybe that’s the poisoned wine!
I walked past some men and reached him in an instance, never taking my eyes off him. I snatched the glass from his hand and threw it on the ground. Everyone looked at me in a surprise. Kayden squared his eyes at me and smiled at his friends before he took me by my elbow and led me to the side.
“What the f**k was that?” He sneered at me pinching my elbow.
“Someone’s here for you.” I whispered to him looking around in a wild panic.
“What? Speak loudly! I can barely hear you!” He said pulling me by my arm as I collided into him and looked at him with wide eyes. He was pissed off that I had caused him a scene and his image.
“Someone’s trying to poison you or kill you, I’m not sure yet!” I said pulling my elbow out of his hold. He sighed heavily.
“Other than you, there’s no one here trying to make a scene and ask for my attention in the most awkward way possible.”
“I- what? No! I’m not looking for attention! Someone is really out here to get you!”
“Well, tell them to bring me a glass of fresh wine because someone f*****g broke my glass a while ago.”
“You’re not listening to me! Your life could be in danger! You could die at any time! What if I had not stopped you from drinking the wine and you had died or something?” I shouted at him crossing my arms across my chest.
“Honey, I’ve already had like three bottles of solid wine, nothing can kill me. I can handle my wine just fine. Waiter, wine!” He said and ordered wine even though I was asking him not to. Hurriedly I took the new glass from his hand and drank it in one go.
Bottoms up, Aiden!
“You’ve got to be kidding me! What is your problem!?”
“My problem is that you’re not listening to me! You’ve had enough! How about you turn in for the night, maybe have someone stand guard at your door tonight!? Am I asking for too much?”
“I don’t know what the f**k you’re on about but you’re pissing me off. You broke my glass and now you stole my drink! Just say that you wanted to drink some wine! Stop making excuses!” He scoffed at me and I held at his wrist holding him from leaving.
“You’re not going anywhere! I have to keep you in front of me until I’m sure that you’re safe! You’re in danger Kayden!” I said as he grabbed another drink. “Why are you drinking so much?” I asked and took the drink from his hand gulping it in one go. The drink burned my throat and I could feel it going down my intestines or something because it burned all the way.
“i***t!” He shouted at me as I swayed a little, holding him for support and laughed awkwardly.
Okay, the drink’s so funny! It’s giving me hiccups!
“That was 39% Alcohol, you stupid ass! You’ll be drunk before you know it! Stop! Stealing! My goddamn drinks!” He glared at me as he shook my hand from his wrist and I faltered a bit.
“No, he’s here somewhere! I saw a tattoo, a compass tattoo on his wrist.” I mumbled as I held onto his wrist again for support, and nothing else. I was feeling woozy and needing the urge for skin ship, like engulf someone in a bone crushing hug.
“I miss Corey, He’d hug me if he was here you know?” I said as I swayed a bit. Kayden caught me from my forearms suddenly, “What did you say?” He asked with his big eyes wide open in surprise.
“That I miss Corey and he’d hug me if he was here?”
“No, before that.”
“Something about a compass tattoo?” I looked at him in confusion.
“s**t! Follow me!” He said pulling me along as he bid farewell to someone and I was being pulled behind.
“Hey!” A voice called me and held onto my wrist making me come to an abrupt stop. I turned to look at my hand and the hand and the arm holding on to it. A man with a broad smile crossed my vision.
“Beautiful smile!” I smiled at him and felt a strong pull that knocked me into Kayden’s chest as he held onto my body from falling.
“Jason! Not now!” Kayden said annoyed.
“No, I was wondering what you were up to since you abandoned our drinking game but here you are drinking with someone else huh?” the said man said and I lifted my finger at him.
“Don’t- don’t let your prince drink tonight, he’ll die…” I mumbled and Kayden clapped his hand over my mouth surprising me. I held on to his hand as his hand was clasped shut over my mouth.
You want to kill me or something!? I can’t breathe!
I bit his hand and licked it from inside.
“He’s just out of it! Nothing to worry about. I’ll take him to his room.” Kayden said.
“Oh! Oh my God! It’s him, isn’t he?” Jason screamed at me and my eyes widened in shock as my body fought against Kayden’s strong hold.
Who’s he? Where? I want to see!? Ahhhh~
I was busy mentally screaming and fighting Kayden as he sighed heavily.
“Could you have been any more obvious? Why don’t you announce to Layla over there? I bet you both would have fun dragging mud on me with it, He has nothing to do with me, he’s just f*****g up my night and I’ll see that he sleeps in his f*****g bed. Bye!” Kayden scoffed at Jason as I pointed at myself.
Are they talking about me? He-he, I’m so confused!
“And you! You silly f**k! I’ll deal with you right now for stealing my drinks and making my night a living hell!” Kayden said as he pulled me along in a headlock. I swear we might’ve looked funny as heck as Jason laughed his head off at us and a girl joined him the moment we were out the door.
