Chapter 1.1
I laid there, on the bed, as my eyes were captivated by the glowing stars shimmering on the ceiling of my room. I exhaled forming angry small fists and squealed in the lowliest inaudible whisper-scream as I could manage.
"What is it now, Aiden?" My cousin called out to me. Huh? I stopped squirming in my bed and turned to look at my cousin who was sleeping on the other bed opposite my own.
"Um, did I wake you up? Heh, sorry... But! Since you're up anyway, why not listen to what's bothering me? What do you say?" I gleamed joyfully and my hopeful eyes were focused towards Corey through the semi darkness in the room barely making out his figure laying on the bed.
"Ugh! No way!" He groaned.
"Oh please! I'm bothered! Really! Really!"
"No! No. You'll start slowly and then it'll turn into a story and it'll never end! Also, what’s the time? God, it’s 1 of midnight! Get some sleep dork!"
"Oh, just listen, would you? I'll make your deal of breakfast tomorrow.”
“…”
"For a week then!"
"Deal!" He popped up on his elbows from where he was lying on his stomach and turned his face in my direction. I felt heat rising to my neck and cheeks as Corey shifted a bit in his bed now propped up on one elbow.
"So what's been bothering you, your highness?" He said and I felt giddy over his choice of words. That particular word, your highness threw sparks my way. Ugh, I could just explode!
"Um, so where to start from-" I said suddenly sitting up in a swift motion and sat on my bed with my pillow in a bone crushing cuddle.
"Whoa there, it better not be a made up story or you'll be sorry later for wasting our- no, my precious time-"
"Ugh, it's not that! It's not! Just listen and don't interrupt!"
"Geez fine! Moody grandma! You may proceed!"
I felt like throwing a cheeky smile but it’s not like he could see it in the dark anyway.
"So, I saw him. Again." I whispered to myself.
"What?"
"What…?" I asked back.
"No. Uh, repeat again, I didn't hear you." He said shifting in his bed for the nth time. Corey was busy nestling in his nest and I felt my emotions disintegrate into mist.
“Could you settle down already for f**k’s sake!?” I whisper screamed at him as he whisper shouted okay back at me.
“…”
"Geez grandma, you suck! I said repeat again, not stop talking altogether." He was irritated and loud.
"Yeah, you are pissing me off Corey, listen once and whisper, I don't want grandma to come barging in and give us an earful! Okay!? Who knows, she might be lurking outside our door right this moment, waiting to pounce on us!"
"Look who's shouting now! Stop yapping!" He complained.
"What I'm doing is whisper shout-"
"Still a shout-"
"Okay, shush!"
"You shush!"
"Ugh, ok... Listen... So... I, met him- I mean, I met him, again! I don’t know how to explain it." I doubled over on my pillow crushing my face audibly loud.
"Okay, first. Stop squealing like you saw your first love or something and second, stop emphasizing, just tell! I’m going to be dead asleep before you even finish-"
"Sure, annoying grandpa! Shush up so I can tell! I can feel the words pouring out of my mouth…"
"..."
"That's better. So, I met him, again. I think this was the second meeting and I think he doesn't even remember me, ugh! But he’s so handsome! I don’t think he even noticed me staring at him all day!"
"Wow, creepy! You stalking someone now?" He chuckled and I glared at him through the darkness hoping to reach his eyes. My nose wrinkled up and I puffed my cheeks. Corey was anything but a good listener. He was anything but sane at the time when he was needed to be sane.
"Stop murdering me in your head. I'm over here." He said in a mocking tone and I sighed heavily.
"Anyway, as I was saying. I met him, well kind of- wasn’t really a meeting, only saw him for some seconds and he was gone. But wait, when he helped me with the things it was more than some seconds I think? Hm... Does staring at him from afar count as us meeting each other?"
"Delusional~"
"Corey?"
"Yeah?"
"I think... I think it might be... la-la-love... I think I’m in love with the concept of him being there for me to stare at. Does it sound cringe or…?"
"Oh boy, interesting! Your train of thoughts has started, hasn’t it? Good night boy in love! Sleep tight! You have breakfast to make." He said shuffling in his bed.
"You too, boring boy!" I whispered back and settled in my bed looking at the half moon shining brightly being covered by clouds outside my window.
Is it going to rain tomorrow? I hope it does!
++++
The moment crossed my mind. It flashed like thunder, right in front of my eyes. I had bumped into him, no, he had bumped into me as I carried the grocery and as a reflex he had grabbed onto my arms to stop me from falling, before he really did let me fall and sit on my butt as the grocery went either way. I fumed and he just stared down at me before sitting down to my eye level. I think he was mesmerized by my beauty. Yeah even middle-aged women fall for my charm, what are boys?
"…eggs!"
“Pfft! They’re not eggs. That’s silly!” I mumbled to myself.
I couldn’t help but stare at his face as it happened to be so close to mine as we stood there. He had held me in his hands and looked down like he had seen a kitten or something. I laughed at myself before my attention got back to his face. It was a beautiful face. He had thick and sharp cut eyebrows and his hood had slipped a little exposing his head with half white and half black hair. The hair had me captivated as they hid his forehead. How could someone look so captivating with half head of white and black hair? His arms felt toned as he held onto my waist. His eyes roamed my face up close in a frenzy.
"Hey! You'll burn the eggs!!"
His jaw was sharp and looked like it had been some days that he had clean shaved his face, a subtle beard was growing on his face. His skin was pale and smooth with those crystal clear light greenish grey eyes. I had never seen such beautiful eyes before. I felt as if I was being dragged into his eyes and he himself had already drowned in his eyes, the way his eyes screamed out sadness.
"Aiden!! The eggs!!" The loud voice shook me out of my thoughts. Huh!? s**t! A strong almost brown burnt crispy scent hit my nose buds. I bit my tongue and hurried to switch off the stove.
What in the world am I thinking about?
"Where are you!? In your fantasy land!? Be thankful it was me or grandma would have taught you a thing or two by now!" Corey shook his head at me and I smiled thankfully before returning towards the golden brown egg omelet settling it on the plates as he passed me sitting down on the dining table. I was really thankful he had warned me in the nick of time or else I would’ve spent the entire day locked in the basement, I mean cleaning it. Grandma doesn’t like me wasting food or anything.
"Ayi-ya! Thoughtless boy! Where is your head at!? Wasting precious food, oh dear god forgive me and my boy for we almost sinned-"
Yeah sure! I started sucking on my upper lip pouting at myself and looked at Corey as he finished mimicking Grandma. We immediately broke in a fit of sad laughter. It was no joke, wasting food but it was always hilarious whenever Corey used to impersonate grandma. Only worth it when grandma didn't use to stand beside and listen to it all just like right now. I pressed my lips together as my eyes widened staring at grandma and I spun around looking busy.
"Hmmm... Boys…!?" Grandma fussed with a raised brow over the glasses resting on her head, definitely pissed off.
"Mo-morning grandma! Breakfast is ready!" I spoke out hesitating a bit.
"Ready? More like burnt toast!" Mother spoke as she headed to sit on the dining table.
"Oh, you woke up on your own?" Grandma asked, surprised. Even I was surprised. Maybe Corey had woken up his mom.
"Well, thank you for this lovely wake up burnt smell Aiden." Mother passed an extremely sarcastic dark smile making me almost spill orange juice on the table.
"Now, now, Martha! It’s better for him to waste food than to be a waste himself, don’t you think so?" Grandma said.
"Thank god they didn't burn the house down or it'd be you who'd need some calming down Ma." Mother said in a nonchalant voice. Yeah, this used to be her usual self no matter who she talked to except Corey and of course, Corey's dad; my adoptive uncle.
Corey's mother had taken me under her wings ever since my parents had passed away in a car accident, only due to the requests my grandma made or else I would have been rotting somewhere else, but rotting nonetheless. At least I could put up with mother here and Corey came as a plus one with her. My buddy in crime. I smiled pitifully at Corey and he threw a finger sign to f**k with me. He succeeded, I cracked up over it.
