"Ma, will you be taking him? I told you before he doesn’t qualify!" I looked from mother to grandma as they talked while munching on breakfast.
Who’s going where now?
"I might, depends if he really is needed. Besides, I could use some help. What’s with him and wasting time looking for jobs when one walked right at our doorsteps?"
"Why not leave that job ma? Leave the palace, we are not those commoners anymore."
"Martha. You damn well know how it works. I’ve worked there all my life, my mother worked there before me and her mother even before that so why bring it up every time you get a chance to talk to me!?" Grandma was pissed, she looked worse than her worse self. Her eyebrows knitted over her forehead and her nose wrinkled, jaw stiffened and eyes held despise in them.
"Ma... Ma! Think it through for once-"
"Aiden?" She looked at me and I froze.
"…yes, grandma?" I hesitated.
"Pack up for the day, you are going for a walk in the palace with me."
Going to the palace? Over palace walls? I’ve waited so long for this- but what about the job interviews?
"Aiden!?" Grandma stood up surprising everyone.
"Ah yes, sorry." I apologized.
“Ma, what about the jobs he has applied for? Don’t you think this will be a waste of time for him? You know I used my connections to get him those. Opportunity like that doesn’t come flying at uneducated boys like him.”
"Like you have ever cared for him to begin with. I will decide what needs to be done. Also, Martha, you can sit here and brood over what you have to wear and how you have to burn other 2nd standard not so commoner women of your supposed elite group.”
“You never listen to me…” Mother whined playing with her toast, she always had a thing for acting like a damsel in distress and grandma would melt to her every word.
“Corey you can tag along if you want, although I suggest you get to study, your father won't like you missing any fencing lessons or your academy."
I gulped, looked from Corey to grandma to mother and then back at Corey.
"Aiden? We don’t have the whole day! Get moving!"
