Ten When the house phone rang the next morning, I knew instinctively it was Bud, even before Genevieve called out, “Cassie, it’s for you.” My heart thudded in my chest. I’d been giving it my all for the last week and a half, literally putting everything on the line in the name of becoming a true cowgirl. I hadn’t always succeeded, but trying had to count for something. I didn’t hear back from New York on any of the dailies, so I had assumed that no news meant good news. Now, as my blood pressure soared, I wondered if that was self-delusion.
