Chapter 1: The Deal That Changed Everything
Rain poured mercilessly against the glass windows, blurring the city lights into streaks of gold and sorrow. Lena Carter stood outside the towering Blackwood Tower, her thin coat doing little to shield her from the cold.
Her fingers trembled—not from the weather, but from desperation.
“Just one chance…” she whispered to herself.
Inside that building was a man who could solve all her problems—or destroy her completely.
Adrian Blackwood.
A name that carried power, fear, and an untouchable arrogance.
Lena had heard the rumors. Everyone had. He was ruthless in business, merciless in negotiations, and completely incapable of love.
Exactly the kind of man she should stay away from.
But life didn’t give her that luxury anymore.
Taking a deep breath, she stepped inside.
The warmth hit her instantly, along with the judgmental eyes of receptionists and sharply dressed employees. Lena felt out of place in her worn shoes and simple dress—but she didn’t turn back.
She couldn’t.
“I… I have a meeting with Mr. Blackwood,” she said, her voice steady despite the storm inside her.
The receptionist raised an eyebrow. “Name?”
“Lena Carter.”
There was a pause. A quick check on the computer.
Then suddenly, the receptionist’s expression changed.
Surprise. Then something else—something close to pity.
“You’re expected,” she said.
Expected?
Lena frowned but said nothing.
Moments later, she found herself inside a private elevator, ascending higher and higher until her ears popped slightly from the pressure.
Each floor felt like a step deeper into something she didn’t fully understand.
The doors opened.
Silence greeted her.
The top floor was nothing like the busy lobby below. It was quiet. Controlled. Almost suffocating.
“Come in.”
The voice was deep. Commanding.
It sent a chill down her spine.
Lena stepped forward slowly, her eyes landing on the man behind the massive desk.
Adrian Blackwood.
He didn’t stand.
He didn’t smile.
He simply watched her.
Sharp eyes. Perfect posture. Power radiating from every inch of him.
“You’re late,” he said coldly.
“I—”
“Sit.”
She obeyed before she could even think.
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
Adrian leaned back slightly, studying her like she was something between a puzzle and a mistake.
“You look… exactly like I expected,” he finally said.
Lena frowned. “What does that mean?”
A faint smirk touched his lips—but it didn’t reach his eyes.
“It means,” he said slowly, “this is going to be easier than I thought.”
Something about his tone made her uneasy.
“I came here because I need help,” she said quickly. “I was told you—”
“I know why you’re here.”
He cut her off like it was nothing.
Like her words didn’t matter.
“I know about your debt,” he continued. “Your sick mother. The hospital bills.”
Lena’s breath caught.
“How do you—”
“I know everything.”
Silence fell again.
Heavy. Dangerous.
Then—
“I’ll help you.”
Her heart jumped.
“Really?” she asked, hope flickering in her chest.
“Yes.”
Too easy.
That should have been her first warning.
“But,” Adrian added, his voice dropping slightly, “nothing comes for free.”
Of course.
Lena swallowed. “What do you want?”
He stood up slowly, walking toward her with measured steps.
Each one felt like a countdown.
When he stopped in front of her, the air between them shifted—tense, electric, suffocating.
“Marry me.”
The words hit like thunder.
Lena blinked.
“I’m sorry… what?”
“Marry me,” he repeated calmly, as if he were asking for something as simple as a signature.
“That’s insane.”
“Is it?”
“Yes!”
She stood up abruptly, her chair scraping against the floor.
“You don’t even know me!”
Adrian’s expression didn’t change.
“Oh, Lena,” he said quietly, “I know more about you than you think.”
A chill ran through her.
“This isn’t a joke,” she said.
“I never joke.”
Silence again.
Her mind raced.
This was wrong. Completely wrong.
But then—
Her mother’s face flashed in her mind.
The hospital.
The unpaid bills.
The fear.
“What happens if I say no?” she asked softly.
Adrian stepped closer.
“Then you walk out that door,” he said, “and nothing changes.”
“And if I say yes?”
His eyes darkened.
“Then your problems disappear.”
A deal with the devil.
Lena closed her eyes for a moment.
This wasn’t how her life was supposed to go.
This wasn’t love.
This was survival.
When she opened her eyes again, something inside her had shifted.
“Okay,” she said.
Adrian tilted his head slightly.
“Okay… what?”
“I’ll do it.”
For the first time—
He smiled.
And somehow…
That was the most terrifying thing of all.
