Chapter 1
Selene's POV
Today is supposed to be the happiest day of my life.
The sun filters softly through the curtains, painting golden lines across the marble floor of my chamber. My heart flutters with anticipation as I stare at my reflection in the tall mirror looking so beautiful with my white wedding gown. A gentle knock comes from the door, and before I can respond, my mother walks in, her eyes misty with emotion.
"My beautiful girl," she whispers, her fingers brushing a strand of hair behind my ear. "Are you ready?"
I nod, but I don't trust my voice just yet. The weight of the moment sits heavily on my chest—not from fear, but from overwhelming joy. I never thought I’d find someone like him. He came into my life when I least expected it, broken and bleeding, and somehow, he made me whole.
The palace is alive with movement. Maids bustle around me, tying silk ribbons, adjusting the lace of my gown, dusting my cheeks with rose powder. I stand still, like a doll, a bride, a princess about to marry the man she loves.
A few of the elder wolves from the council came to bless the union earlier this morning. They offered me cryptic smiles and firm nods, the kind that meant approval. Even Father, who had always been cautious about letting outsiders close, gave his consent. For once, I felt like I had everything I’d ever dreamed of.
I remember the day I found him, unconscious by the riverbank, cloaked in blood and mystery. That day changed everything. But that story is for another time.
Today, I am to become his.
A flute melody echoes from the central courtyard. My wedding. Our wedding.
I take a deep breath as the doors swing open and begin my walk down the long stone hallway leading to the ceremonial ground. My people bow as I pass, their faces glowing with joy. Flower petals scatter beneath my feet. The scent of jasmine and pine fills the air.
My mind drifts to the stolen moments with him—the way his eyes softened when they met mine, the way his voice dropped when he called me by name, the way I caught him smiling when he thought I wasn’t looking. I had never been in love before him, never even considered it. But with him, everything felt different. Right. Fated.
And then I see him—tall, regal, and devastatingly handsome in his ceremonial armor. His dark eyes lock onto mine. There’s something in his gaze I can’t quite place. Not nervousness. Not excitement. Something else.
The officiant begins the ancient rites, his voice echoing through the open square.
"Today we join two hearts, two bloodlines, in unity under the moon. Do you, Selene, accept this bond?"
"I do," I say, voice steady, though my fingers tremble.
"And do you—"
A howl cuts through the air. It’s not joyous. It’s a warning.
The crowd stiffens. Soldiers move instinctively, hands on weapons. My father stands, eyes narrowed.
And then everything happens at once.
An explosion rocks the gate. Smoke pours in, followed by warriors—armed, fast, brutal. Screams rise like a storm. I smell the blood before I see it.
My first instinct is to run, but I freeze as I see him—my soon-to-be husband—stepping back, away from me. He doesn’t draw his sword to protect me. He doesn’t shield me.
He turns... and walks toward them.
My breath catches. My heart lurches.
No.
No, no, no.
I stumble backward as he reaches the invading soldiers and nods. Nods.
The man I nursed back to health. The man I trusted. The man I loved.
He came not for love. Not for peace.
He came to bring war.
The warriors tear through our defenses with terrifying precision. My people are falling. My home is burning. The courtyard where I was to be joined in love now flows with blood and fire.
And he—he stands there, calm, unreadable, watching it all unfold.
A soldier rushes toward me. I back away, heart racing, eyes still on him. He sees. He sees me in danger.
He doesn’t move.
He lets the man grab me.
I scream his name.
"Kairo!"
He flinches. Just barely. But he doesn't come.
I try to fight, but the soldier is strong. My gown tangles around my feet, making it harder to run. I call out again, begging him, pleading with my eyes.
Nothing.
Not a step. Not a word.
It’s as if the man I loved never existed at all.
And in that moment, as smoke and blood taint the air, I know:
The man I gave my heart to came not to be mine—but to destroy everything I held dear.
The betrayal cuts deeper than any blade.
And this… is only the beginning.
