Feelings of Disappointment

1140 Words
I bite my lower lip as I wait for us to get any information about our work. Paulina giggles as Mark speaks to her. I roll my eyes because who wouldn't be affected by him? I sigh as I lean back in my chair. They are making everyone else wait here. If I would've known that this would've happened, then I would refuse to intern here at Sternpoint. "Welcome to Sternpoint". I look up to see Mark addressing us. We are quite a few interns. "Sternpoint is the main company which I inherited when my father passed away. Sternpoint was just one company focussing on real estate, but since I inherited this company, I decided to expand it, offering more. From real estate all the way to travel, there is a variety of everything. I expanded my business across the world and I am proud to say that this company is a huge success, and you get the opportunity to intern here and, who knows, even work here permanently" he says as his eyes find mine. I hold his stare, but I'm still annoyed with him right now, all attractiveness aside. "Any questions?" he asks as he breaks eye contact with me. I raise my hand. He looks at me. "Yes Gray-Lynn?" I lower my hand. "When will we begin with work?" I ask with a smirk. His eyes burn into mine. "Well you are welcome to start working once I leave" he says and then he looks at the rest of the interns. "Any other questions?" he scans the room. "Okay, no questions, that is my cue to leave and let you all get started with work. Best of luck", he says. He walks over to Paulina. I roll my eyes. "So where have you graduated from?" Sam asks me and I look at him. "From Seattle Central College and how about you?" "George Brown School of Design in Toronto" he says. "So you're new to Seattle?" I ask with a little excitement. He smiles "Yes I am, I just got here a month ago. My mother works for one of the other companies in Sternpoint and she got me this internship which was only available here", he says. "I see" I say as I look back at Mark and Paulina still talking. "Maybe we can hang out sometime" he says, and I look at him. "I would love that" I say as smile at him. "Gray-Lynn, Can I see you in my office now". I look up to see Mark staring hard at me. "Yes" I say as I stand up from my desk and I walk after him to his office. I can't help but admire him from behind. Once we reach his office, I close the door behind me. Mark sits down behind his desk and I take a seat as well. "I want to offer you a different position" he says looking at me with those intensity in his eyes. "Okay, what position is it?" I ask. "I need an assistant, I know that you will be able to handle anything. My first thought is you" he says. "Um, what about the web designing?" I ask. "You can still create designs for my company while you are an assistant for me" he says. "Well, I guess I can do it" I shrug. He places documents gently down in front of me. I take it and I read over it roughly. The form for the assistant job and a non-fraternization policy. I look up at him, he is already looking at me, studying me. "I need a pen to fill this out" I say. He reaches over and hands me the pen that he was clicking yesterday in the interview. I quickly fill in the form and sign where I needed to, and I place the pen and forms down. "Any questions?" he asks me as he takes the documents from the desk. "Yes, why are you so concerned about me having a boyfriend?" He pauses with the documents in his hand, as he looks at me. "I have known you since you were young, Gray. I watched how your father raised you alone after your mother died. I was there to help look after you, to tuck you into your bed, read you the bedtime stories, help you with homework, attend your concerts at school. I had to be there for you while your father was traveling on business when no one else could. So what I meant by 'I hope you didn't have any boyfriends' is that I hope your heart wasn't broken to pieces and the same care that I had for you when you were kid, like any father has, is the same care that I wished I had after I left and beat up any boy that broke your heart" he looks at me more seriously. I didn't expect that, I thought that he was jealous or something. "Thank you for explaining", I say feeling embarrassed. "Just know that I will look out for you here as well, like old times. And you can start tomorrow, but Jackie can go over things with you for the assistant job" he says returning his gaze to the documents in his hand. "Why did you leave and never came back?" I ask, letting out a breath. He places the documents down in front of him, and then returns his attention back on me "My father died that year, so he left me the company. I got really busy with it, I had no time to visit anyone, like I said earlier I have expanded this company,so you can guess how busy I was", he says with a guilty look on his face as he looks down on his desk. "I understand" I say. He looks up at me with a soft smile, I missed that smile. "Your father always came to visit me when he came for business meetings" he says. Well, that I didn't know, so my father always saw him. "I see" is all that I manage to say. "I have a meeting soon, Jackie will start when you are ready" he says and I nod, standing up from my seat. "Thank you" I say and I walk out of the office. I walk over to the web designing department, and I explain to Paulina. I also explain to Sam that I got the assistant job as I pack up my things at the desk that I was seated at earlier. I will be working more closely with Mark now, which I was trying to avoid since he takes the air away from me. I am so stupid thinking that he actually returned my feelings but he doesn't. Just my dad's best friend looking out for his friends kid. I feel disappointed.
