Chapter one
The story begins at the beginning of the new semester. Students had just come from an extended holiday, but Sandra Roberts and her friends were already planning another spring break. They were so confident that none of their parents would deny them such an opportunity because of their last visit. They behaved well, and their parents vouched for another holiday for them. Gilbert Classical Academy is one of a kind. The teacher's and students' cooperation in academics and co-curricular activities is tremendous. The same reason enabled the twelve friends to stay together for a long time. On several weekends, they meet to either play an indoor game or outdoors, depending on the day's weather. Parents closely monitor the kinds of games their children engage in, as children can be naughty. Generally, they go hiking, swimming, diving, and attend each other's birthday parties. They are not left behind in school as most participate in extracurricular activities and achieve success. It is something they always celebrate. The educational symposiums, Debate Club, Journalism Club, Science Congress, and Mathematics Contest are also there. They participate in these activities to build confidence, gain skills, and improve their listening and speaking skills.
A week doesn't pass during the semester without mentioning their spring break. The semester has numerous activities, and a number of them made it memorable. For instance, John Paul, a tall black American, and handsome boy scored the highest during the last football match against a neighboring school. John Paul is easy to like. Sometimes people say his height makes everyone like him unknowingly. His company is excellent with lots of fun activities.
John Paul's Narrative
My friends and I understand the need for a vacation, especially after a busy semester. As we walked out of Gilbert Classical Academy, we had something at the back of our minds. We had grown fond of each other and wanted to extend our friendship by going away for a week. Money wasn’t a problem, we had created a kitty to save for such occasions. Our parents supported our ideas without hesitation. Another reason we needed the spring break far away from our homes was to celebrate our wins and talk about adolescent stuff away from the surveillance of our parents. Although nothing was sinister about it, some parents were skeptical. We feel we are a little bit grown, and parents should not always be on our necks. It was about time for us to explore the outside world. When I was a young boy, around five years old, I used to love watching and playing soccer. My father wasn't a massive fan as he had just relocated to the USA from South Africa and wasn't sure about living there. On the hand, I enjoyed spending time watching the older boy play soccer on an estate pitch. There are days I would miss meals to learn the tricks of the players. Within no time, I had mastered a lot of skills in football. At nine, I had already figured out what I wanted in life. Unfortunately, it is where I differed from my father. To him, football should not take much of my time which it did. He always scolded me about it and threatened to take me back to South Africa. I have never been disappointed like that ever before. I thought parents' role was to support their children, but I was all wrong. My father was the complete opposite. I was wrong.
I refer to her as an Alpha woman; my mother stood up with me. She is strong, ambitious, and possesses high emotional intelligence whenever they differ from my father. When I came home distressed about my father's decision to deny me the opportunity to pursue my talent in football. My mother held my hand and asked me to obey my father as she went ahead to speak with him about it. Weeks later, she came with the news that my father had given me the go-ahead to proceed with my football training. I was thrilled. My mother was on her chaperone duty: she was a soccer mother. During the numerous football coaching that seemed overwhelming, she encouraged me to attend despite being worn out. It lifted my spirit.
After several training, I became a pro in football. One evening, my mother received a call from my coach Mr. Abdala informing her that I had secured a chance to play at an upcoming football club in Ohio. At last, my efforts began paying off. My father started seeing sense in accepting me to participate in football. I heard him brag about my football prowess to his friends, but I pretended not to have listened to a thing. Then, the last successful bit scored the highest during an open tournament. That gave me a scholarship. I had never seen my father smile like that; he was happy to have such a gifted child.
The sports coach was excited about the semester's performance as we generally worked as a team. Sandra Roberts receives an award as the fastest in athletics. She wins a medal placing on the next stage to compete favorably with other athletes from other schools. Her extroverted personality makes her close to everyone in school. She had worked hard towards attaining that spot and had a reason for a celebration. The little wins were not for granted as they called for practice, patience, resilience, and hard work. Sandra Roberts was lucky enough to get support from her father, Dr. Roberts, from the word go. She has managed to travel the world with her father. A win from one of them meant a win for all: they collectively embraced the success of their friends. Some parents sometimes gift their children's friends for their excellent performance. John Paul and Sandra Roberts have received numerous awards from their friend's parents.
Della Roberts, a younger brother to Sandra Roberts, surprises everyone when he sits for an examination and beats all his elder classmates. When Sandra Roberts started pre-school, Della Roberts was barely three years, but he couldn't remain behind. His parents tried forcing him to stay home with a nanny but became aggressive. Later, Mr. and Mrs. Roberts were forced to allow Della to study in the same class with his elder sister Sandra Roberts. The exemplary performance draws teachers that Della Robert possesses despite his younger age. He is termed a genius. From an early age, Della Roberts lead in Sciences and Mathematics. Della Roberts is inspired by Ben Carson, the successful American neurosurgeon, and politician. Mr. Robert's profession as a philanthropist pharmacist makes him happy. Della longs to follow the pursuit of his father, although they don't get along.
The Roberts family has had a rough time. Despite Sandra and Della performing exemplary in academics and non-academics, they are facing a series of court battles as their parent's fight for the custody of each of them. The decision was difficult to reach as they tabled their differences accusing each other. The jury's judgment later mandated Della to stay with his mother while Sandra stayed with her father and ordered visitation from either of the parents. They were happy as the two siblings separated, each living with one of their parents. Sandra Roberts loved her parents equally and made routines to visit her mother on several weekends. It wasn't the case for Della Roberts. He disliked his father with a passion. Their separation never affected the lives of their children. They played their parental obligation and roles by providing everything. All in all, Della and Sandra are inseparable. When Dr. Roberts heard about the plan to visit South Korea, he quickly agreed. He is happy that his children will have time to spend with their friends away for some time. The twelve friends' friendship is based not only on social gatherings and fun but also on emotional and financial support when needed. They are necessary for good times and provide support during challenging moments. Amber Ray has received help from her friends since time immemorial. On her 10th birthday, Amber Ray's family was affected by a crisis. While driving from work, Mr. Feng rammed into an immobile trunk after the car failed its brakes. He almost lost his life but got into a coma for half a decade. Mr. Feng's family planned several physiotherapies and check-ups to help him stabilize. The accident affected everyone in the family in a different way. Amber Ray could not balance her emotional challenges with her father's state as she was his darling daughter. When doctors declared dementia for Mr. Feng, Amber Ray felt her world crumbling down her feet. (Dementia is not a specific disease but rather a general term for impaired memory, thinking, or decision-making that interferes with daily activities.) They had exhausted their financial resources, but Dr. Roberts could wait and offered professional help through guidance and counseling. Amber Ray and her mother went through a traumatic moment for quite some time. The condition of Mr. Feng build fear in them watching him in such a distressing condition. It was a threat to their safety, and they felt at risk all the time should anything terrible happen to Mr. Feng. As a result, Amber Ray experienced high levels of emotional, psychological, and physical distress, affecting her general performance in school. Amber Ray could not imagine her lively father lying helpless in bed for the longest time. Her performance moved from bad to worse until teacher Morris, the head teacher, intervened. There are days she misses school due to a lack of fees. During the visitation, teacher Morris found Amber Ray, her mother, and her father in a desperate situation. He raised the alarm to the school management, who waived fees for Amber Ray due to her previous excellent performance in academics. Amber Ray had hidden the truth from her friends, who felt bad when the teacher announced it. Sandra Roberts confronted Amber Ray in a friendly manner. She looked for a neutral ground to attack. While speaking to her, Amber Ray cried her heart out, but she received assurance from Sandra Roberts, who has always been more like a sister to her. Hailey Beryl, Laura Martins, and Bridget Vergara vowed to be visiting Amber Ray to support her emotionally. While chatting on one of the Saturdays, they discuss the plan to visit South Korea. Amber Ray feels terrible she would not be in a position to afford the expenses in the new country. However, her mother was enthusiastic, remembering that they had relatives there. She grabs her phone and reaches out to her only brother Chan Yeol. Amber Ray is shocked that her favorite uncle lives in Seoul, South Korea. The eleven friends habitually visit Amber Ray from time to time providing support to the family. They provided companionship, preventing loneliness and isolation and keeping her abreast with school work. The friendship provided a sense of belonging and purpose to each separately. Each of them had a story to tell. If not for the dramatic occurrences in their families, then something about themselves or school work. The challenges kept them strong. They held each other's hands during the lows and highs in life. Henry Sayo never missed amusing his friends with his funny responses to situations. He had proved to be a fighter. He was never happy living with a polygamous father who unfairly treated his mother. He cracked his friend's ribs when they least expected it. Henry's personality was great; he was a people person. Everyone loved him. On several occasions, he would arrive at school late, but the teachers never caned him as his response left them in stitches. When given a responsibility as an overall monitor, he does well in organizing his fellow students and surprising his friends in school. His presence was always felt whenever he failed to turn up during weekend meetings as friends. He was looking forward to traveling with his friends to South Korea; better still, no one would wish to go without Henry Sayo. Above all, they loved teaching and learning different skills from one another. Good friends always teach themselves how to become a better version. It is the same reason the twelve friendship grows by the day. They inspire each other and encourage themselves to pursue their dreams, allowing each to accomplish all of their objectives. Jun Suravi was obsessed with swimming; he would go to rivers and canals whenever he could not afford to pay for the swimming services in a fancy hotel. The primary reason Jun Suravi enjoys swimming is that it can be very relaxing. He claims to enjoy floating on water and experiencing near-weightlessness. His friends admire his prowess in swimming and have always lent a helping hand to teach those who dared. Laura Martins, Hailey Beryl, and Meera Katrina learned how to swim by taking lessons from Jun Suravi. Although some of their friends had a bad influence, most had something constructive to learn from.During the first holidays after school closes, they all assemble at Meera Katrina's home, but the visit turns nasty. Mr. Meera is a police officer familiar with the city's crimes. He is shocked to hear the name PENA in their midst. He gets furious, claiming that the famous PENA is a d**g dealer and a fugitive. Everyone is surprised by the revelation as they had never imagined that Damian Pena came from such a crooked family. "Damian Pena is the son of a famous d**g dealer in Mexico who is a fugitive." Mr. Meera informs Katrina and her friends, who they detest. "Are you sure, father?" Katrina is quick to interject, protecting his alleged boyfriend. "I am pretty sure." Mr. Meera affirms, asking Damian to leave the house immediately. Everyone is shocked by the change in Katrina's mood. She stands up and tells off her father, asking him to respect her friends. "Father, there is a better way of handling this issue." Katrina pleads as everyone else in the room looks lost. "Are you siding with this criminal?" Mr. Meera questions.
"But sir…" Damian pleads, almost kneeling. "I say leave right away!" Mr. Meer shouts. "Father, please, be fair for once." Katrina cries out. The name Pena rings a bell in his head, although Damian denies having any connection with the said Pena. Mr.Meera gets furious and sends Damian away like a dog. "Okay, I will leave," Damian growls. He banged the door behind him, creating tension. There is silence in the living room. Katrina begins crying, and her father gets concerned. He doesn't understand why Katrina calls, yet ten of her friends are still with her. The following morning at work, Mr. Meera begins searching to know the true identity of Damian Pena's father. From the records, there was nothing to question about his work. Strangely, he had never been involved in the shoddy business as he had suspected. Mr. Meera feels guilty for doing what he did to her daughter's friend. Immediately, he calls his daughter Katrina apologizing for what he had caused. On the hand, the secret relationship between Katrina and Damian Pena almost ends as Damian gets angry. Katrina tries to call Damian, but he refuses to answer her calls.
"I am not in the mood, Trina." A message reads later after several answered calls. Since then, Katrina has been restless. She isn't herself. Some of her friends know the relationship between the two and understand her reason for being moody throughout. To make it worse, Damian leaves their w******p Group. He informs the rest that he won't be traveling to South Korea. Katrina tries to convince him, but she fails; Katrina blackmails her father for embarrassing Damian Pena before her friends. It calls for a peace talk between Damian Pena, Katrina, and Mr. Meera, where he apologizes for whatever he did. Damian agrees to forgive Mr. Meera and travel to South Korea with the rest. They were all in agreement about visiting South Korea. Firstly, they had to learn about folklore beforehand. Amber Ray's uncle Chan Yeol becomes their point man as he is given the mandate to search for a conducive apartment for the twelve friends. Chan Yeol knew what Amber Ray and her family had been through. He surprised his niece when he informed her that he would cater to all her needs. It was a relief for her mother. Each apartment Chan Yeol found didn't meet the kind of one they desired. Funnily, he never hesitated to help them look around until, after several days, he (Home Away From Home for You), Gangseo- GU, an apartment in Seoul. Gangseo- GU had a high-end appearance that attracted the troop's decision to settle on it. From the pictures that Chan Yeol sent, they see beautiful stone countertops, hardwood floors, plush carpeting, and appliances selected for their cohesion to the décor featured in the average apartment complex. It was made more exciting by the presence of tennis courts and various other sports-related amenities, fitness clubs, spas, even a movie theater, and a rooftop deck for recreational activities with friends. Even the apartment's interior was designed to express luxury in the most emphatic terms. The living spaces are surrounded by high ceilings, arched doorways, floor-to-ceiling windows, and abundant architectural features. The bedrooms are spacious, the kitchens are expansive, and there is space to move around. They were impressed by the pictures they got from Uncle Chan Yeol, giving him the go-ahead to book it for them. Parents were happy with the developments. They felt safe hearing that Uncle Chan Yeol is in South Korea to assist their children in settling. He also sent the estimated expenditure for the children's stay in Seoul. However, not all parents had an easy time allowing their children to travel to South Korea. Firstly, Amber Ray had financial constraints. Even though his uncle promised to cater for her travel expenses, her mother wasn't happy. It took her time to accept the offer as other parents asked her to allow Amber Ray to travel with her friends. Bridget Vergara and Dhruv Khan had paranoid parents. It becomes challenging for Dhruv Khan, who lives with a foster care parent who allows him such an opportunity. They were scared about him finding out that he wasn't their biological child. How he finds out is a story for another day. There was much for them to do away in South Korea; before they traveled, they lay down the purpose of visiting the country that permits them all. The choice of South Korea comes in handy; Bridget Vergara claims Korean men are very handsome and should visit the country to admire their good looks. Her friends laugh at her silly jokes, but it excites Sandra, Katrina, Laura, Hailey, and Amber Ray. Since childhood, they have been watching a series of movies from South Korea and couldn't wait to get there. The unique plots of supernatural Korean dramas and films have a way of holding their attention. The abundance of Korean folklore and urban legends from which to draw makes them yearn to visit the haunted sites and learn more about mythology. Although the Korean movies are terrifying, with vengeful spirits hovering around, blood-sucking zombies, and walking dead people, strangely, they are eager for such an exciting opportunity. The traditions and tales that constitute Korean folklore are influenced by Shamanism, Confucianism, Buddhism, and, more recently, Christianity. There are two major cities that the twelve friends plan to visit; Seoul and Incheon. However, they learn more about Korean folklore before traveling and creating a bucket list to see the haunted sites. The decision is reached so that in South Korea, it will be easy to understand the customs, traditions, and folklore. Using the current w******p Group, they begin learning the major folklore in South Korea. It includes Goblin or dokkaebi, Jeoseung Saja or grim reaper, mermaids, Gumiho or nine-tailed fox, Cheonyo Gwishin or virgin ghost, and Mul Gwishin or water ghost.
