chapter twelve

Della Roberts is crying. It creates tension among the rest of the friends in the room. When John Paul tries to intervene, he screams louder than before. “What is it?” The noise in the room awakens Jun Suravi. He switches on the lights and finds Della leaning on the wall and crying uncontrollably. “I want my sister.” Della cries out. When his roommates try to persuade him, he refuses and continues to seek the presence of his sister. “Do you know the time?” Henry Sayo yells at him. “I don’t care!” Della Roberts rudely responds as he wails in pain. The rest of his friends ignore him, but Jun Suravi finds it a nuisance as he can’t sleep. He later gives in to his demands. Damian Pena and Jun Suravi leave for the girl’s room to inform Sandra Roberts about what was happening in their room. When the girls hear a knock on their door, they scream in fear, thinking it is the same ghost that Sandra saw the previous day while cleaning dishes. They were hallucinating. Visiting haunted places makes them susceptible to fear. When the knock persists, Hailey Beryl asks the rest of the girls to escort her as she goes to open the door. They carry umbrellas, pairs of shoes, and anything that one can use in case it was a ghost on the door. Swiftly and silently, they move closer to the door. “Who is there? “Hailey questions confidently. “ Open the door!” Damian speaks as the girls feel bad for having freaked out for no apparent reason. They burst into laughter, feeling silly. Sandra Roberts hears the news of his brother’s distress: she rushes to his room to console him. Della Roberts complains of having a severe headache. He also says the images of skeletons can’t get off his mind. He was terrified and wanted to go home. “We can’t go home, brother,” Sandra Roberts tells him. “Give him this.” John Paul hands him two pills and a glass of water. “Wait, which drugs are those?” Hailey tries to interject, but Della Roberts swallows them immediately. “OH! s**t!” Hailey exclaims as it catches the attention of everyone. “Do you people know the dangers of taking drugs without a prescription?” Hailey scolds the rest of her friends. “I hear it can be dangerous.” Jun Suravi adds. “It is very wrong!” Bridget Vergara agrees with the rest. She goes ahead to narrate a story about a baby that was misdiagnosed. They get worried after hearing the scary story of Bridget Vergara. Sandra Roberts' Narrative I have never freaked out like that before in my life. Firstly, the story Bridget Vergara shares on the consequences of administering drugs without proper diagnosis. Secondly, when Damian and Jun called us in the middle of the night about my younger brother. Della Roberts means the world to me, and I wouldn’t wish anything to happen to him. I was shocked when I found him clinging to the edge of the bed. At first, I thought I was dreaming. He looked possessed. “Why would Della Roberts behave like this?” the question ran through my mind. I felt guilty about his state and how I would begin to inform our parents. The most traumatizing moment was when I remembered Della Roberts asking us to stop visiting those haunted sites. It is unfair that he suffers the most from visiting those contaminated sites. My brother complained of those nasty headaches and numerous flashlights in his mind. He couldn’t bear it. He began to weep bitterly, cursing and fussing. I tried to intervene, but all was in vain. Even after asking him to sleep with me in the same bed, Della Roberts was determined to return home. It was a difficult decision for the group. If they had to go by his demands, it would mean that parents would realize the kind of places their children were planning to visit. Della Roberts’s decision put everything in a dilemma that evening. Each person slept feeling guilty. We've all done things we're embarrassed about. We've all made poor decisions and choices. However, visiting South Korea wasn’t that bad. (giggling) Each of us has a long list of regrets. The twelve of us are not an exception. We are sorry not only for what we did but also for what we did not do. The decision to visit South Korea’s haunted sites was due to peer pressure. We often wonder what our lives would have been like if we had not taken that risk, said yes to that opportunity, and made a different decision. We are also afraid that something wrong will happen to any of us. Worse still, if anything happens to all of us. “To whom are we going to blame?” I wonder. Questions can’t stop flushing through my mind. I feel that I am between a rock and a hard place. Luckily, the d**g worked wonders; I can't remember how soon my brother fell asleep. The topic came up when he cried, threw tantrums, and requested to return home. We were pleased that he was sleeping. As we retired, we all hoped he would have calmed his nerves down by the following day. Finally, we all agreed that the sensation of regret is unpleasant. We had crossed the bridge and were already in South Korea. There was no turning back, no room for blame and regrets. I psyched myself as I was ready to enjoy the rest of my days in Seoul.Laura Martins has always suspected that John Paul had a thing for Bridget Vergara. The beautiful Colombian girls have always stolen the show. She is gorgeous and endowed but goofy. She loved fashion, and most of her outfits would always stand out. Her friends loved her, but seemingly, John Paul had his interests. The last time Bridget failed to cook, she was punished. However, on the third morning, John requested Bridget to assist him in preparing breakfast for the group to amend her mistakes. It was a brilliant idea. When the rest woke up, they found the table set with a delicious meal. They couldn’t stop teasing the two, calling them husband and wife. Laura Martins confirms her suspicions. Uncle Chan Yeol arrives just before they clear the table. He was surprised that the two had made Korean cuisine their best. They couldn’t hide their joy. They openly informed the rest that they had learned how to make it through YouTube tutorials. That day, they were going to the park. They carried costumes as Uncle Chan Yeol reminded them that it was a fun place and swimming would be one of their best activities. Within an hour, they arrived at Yongma Theme Park. At the entrance gate, John Paul pays a fee equivalent to $4.5 before being let in. The place was serene and charming. In Yongsan, the Jungnang District of Seoul, South Korea, there is a small amusement park known as Yongma Land that has been abandoned. It went out of business since it didn't make enough money, but now anyone can go there for 10,000 won per day. It has quickly become a mecca for cosplay as well as a variety of other trends. Yongma Land opened its gates in 1980 as a modest amusement park that catered to families. Yongma Land quickly became a favorite destination for local families in the first ten years after it opened its doors. However, when Lotte World opened its doors to the public in 1989, many lost interest in visiting this modest amusement park. 2011 was the year that marked the park's last official year of operation. Rumor has it that the spirit of a young girl who died on a ride at the theme park in 2011 still haunts the place. The park was rumored to have been shut down after this incident occurred. The lovely Yongma Park attracted many children in the neighborhood of Jungnang District. Usually, the park was full of people on the weekends. Family and friends loved spending quality time as the park offered the best Korean cuisines and a wide variety of games that entertained their children. A frequent customer that was accustomed to visiting the park with their children. One fateful weekend everything went south as their eldest daughter died while playing games with other children. Strangely, the girl's body wasn’t discovered, but later reports indicated that tourists complained of a young girl's spirit hovering around the park. It is the main reason the park was closed in early 2011. When I was younger, my mother would usually take my sister and me out on the weekends. We had a good time there in the park, running, jumping, and playing during the time we spent there. My mother was always far away, watching over us and cautioning us whenever we engaged in dangerous games. The Yongma Park features a separate play area equipped with a merry-go-round, swings, see-saws, and slides, in addition to other types of playground equipment. My sister and I will participate in one round of each playful activity and give other friends a chance to participate. We enjoyed the session and always looked forward to visiting the park countless times. One of my favorite games that my sister loved was sliding down from the highest point. It was a truly fantastic experience. I enjoyed watching her take the challenge with her friends. Swinging at greater heights gives the impression that one is flying through the air. On the other hand, I was one freaking person and could be as daring as my elder sister. Although I yearned to try playing games with her, my conscience wouldn’t allow me. Thus, I stood admiring her prowess. We occasionally included our other friends in our games of hiding and seeking. After playing for a considerable time, my mother called us to have some bites before leaving for home. She signaled to me, but I was glued to watching my sister showcase her new skills. It caught the attention of everyone, and within no time, every child abandoned their games to watch my sister. Everyone was jeering, clapping, and encouraging my sister to swing at greater heights. It was scary. Accidentally, the swing broke while my sister was in the air. Screams of utter shock filled the air as parents, guardians, and workers ran towards the place. I was shocked by the turn of events. I ran as fast as we could to catch the swing, but, to my surprise, nothing came forth. My sister mysteriously vanished in the thin air. There were wails at the park as it was shocking. “Nothing like this has ever happened here!” one parent lamented as he went to grab his children. Confusion filled the park. The park is filled with various bushes and trees and lovely flowering plants. The workers in Yongma Park dispersed immediately to search for the girl in the bushes. There was no sign that she had fallen there. No one heard the sound of the girl falling to the ground. The experience was mysterious, and everyone around became scared. The girl was missing. The swing, too, couldn’t be traced. “The place can’t contain us.” The mother of the missing girl lamented. Within no minutes, the park was scarce. Everyone went away after the ordeal occurred. Typically, adults work out in the park's dedicated exercise section, which is called the Gym. People also practice yoga in the Yoga Open Hall, a separate space. Many people have a long walk through the pathway without any disturbance. That day was historic; everyone left within the shortest time. There is a tiny pond with different colored fish. My sister and I often went there to watch the colored fish. I imagined that maybe she was there. I had to dash there against my mother’s wish. Strangely, there was no one. I was traumatized by the events. “How can my sister vanish like that?” I questioned the universe. “Do such things happen?” I could comprehend. I have heard of such stories and understood they were fictional. I was tongue-tied. My mother couldn’t control herself. She bet countless times, blaming herself for trusting the ark with our lives. She swore never to forgive herself. It was a dark day for our family. On a typical day, we would sit and rest beside the pond. However, that wasn’t the case that day. It wasn’t easy to come to terms with the demise of my elder sister. It is the main reason Yongma Park was closed indefinitely. Although tourists still visit the park, residents are scared of spending time as they complain of watching my late sister's ghost swinging and enjoying all manner of games at the park. Everyone who dares to visit the park is warned about ghosts as they are not known to be friendly. To date, the young girl’s spirit hovers around the park entertaining guests.
