Ryder stormed into the restaurant, his eyes scanning the room for the elderly woman he had
imagined Ms. Tawny to be. But as his gaze landed on a pretty redhead, he was taken aback.
This couldn't be Ms. Tawny, as far as he knows Tawny was an elderly woman, who enjoyed
making people like him suffer, he walked towards the stunningly beautiful young woman
with piercing green eyes and long, red hair.
As Ryder stepped into the crowded room, his eyes scanned the space, searching for the one
person he needed to speak with. He had a mental image of Tawny Miles, the activist who had
been causing him so much trouble. He expected someone older, more hardened, with a stern
expression.
His gaze swept over the room, taking in the familiar faces of his colleagues and
acquaintances. And then, his eyes landed on a girl with striking red hair, cascading down her
back like a fiery waterfall. She was laughing at something someone had said, her bright green
eyes sparkling with mirth.
Ryder's eyes narrowed, taking in her slender figure, accentuated by the fitted white blouse
and dark jeans she wore. She looked...familiar, yet he couldn't quite place her. He felt a pang
of curiosity, wondering who this beautiful girl was.
And then, she turned to face him, a look of calm curiosity on her face. "Can I help you?" she
asked, her voice smooth as silk.
Ryder's eyes locked onto hers, and he felt a jolt of surprise. There was something about her
that seemed...familiar. And then, it hit him. The red hair, the bright green eyes...this was
Tawny Miles.
He felt like he had been punched in the gut. Tawny Miles, the activist who had been causing
him so much trouble, was...beautiful. Stunningly, breathtakingly beautiful. Ryder's mind
struggled to reconcile the image he had of her with the reality standing before him.
Alex had briefed him on what to expect from Tawny Miles. "She's a middle-aged woman,"
Alex had said. "Probably a homemaker, deeply rooted in the community. She's likely to be passionate about preserving the character of the neighborhood, and she'll probably oppose
the demolition plans."
Ryder had nodded, taking mental note. It was normal for older residents to oppose
demolitions around this particular community. They had a strong sense of nostalgia and
were often fiercely protective of their homes and surroundings.
Though he felt a pang of sympathy for them, Alex knew he didn't have any say in what Ryder
was about to do. Once he had his mind set on something, he wouldn't back out, ever. It was a
trait that had served him well in business, but sometimes made him come across as stubborn
or unyielding.
Now, as he stood before Tawny, Ryder couldn't help but feel a sense of surprise. She was
nothing like he had expected…
For a moment, he forgot to breathe. Forgot to speak. Forgot to do anything except stare at
her in awestruck silence.
And then, he remembered himself. He cleared his throat, trying to compose himself. "Ms.
Miles," he growled, trying to sound stern. "We need to talk.”
As Ryder walked into the restaurant, Tawny's eyes widened in surprise. She couldn't believe
it was really him, the Ryder, standing in front of her. He was even more handsome than he
was in pictures, with chiselled features, piercing blue eyes, and a strong jawline that seemed
carved from granite. His dark hair was perfectly messy, and his powerful aura filled up the
room. He exuded confidence and charisma, and Tawny could feel the air around her charged
with electricity as he moved. She felt a flutter in her chest, but quickly covered it up with a
scowl, trying to maintain her usual composure and hide the fact that she was awestruck by
his presence. When she saw him about to look her way, she quickly turned away and tried to
compose herself.
“Don't drool over the enemy, girl!” She whispered to herself
And now this God of manliness is standing right before her, looking down at her, damn! He
is tall, exactly what she'd always wanted in a man, a man who would bend down just to kiss
her and he would be at an advantage, pulling her into him and taking what he wants, she
shivered, just the image of that is enough to get her off, she heard Lilly clear her throat,
signaling her to get herself together.
Tawny looked up, a hint of a smile on her face. "Oh, Mr. Ryder. What brings you to our
humble establishment?"
Ryder's eyes narrowed, trying to maintain his tough exterior. "You are aware, Ms. Tawny,
that your recent protests have been causing significant disruptions to my business
operations. And now, I have received reports that someone has been sabotaging my
equipment. Doesn't that sound strange to you?"
Tawny's smile grew wider, and Mr. Ryder found himself momentarily distracted by her
beauty. But he quickly shook off the feeling, reminding himself of his purpose. "I won't be
surprised if it was you, Ms. Tawny, that you are the individual responsible for the breakdown
of my machines."
Lilly, who had been sitting next to Tawny, stood up, her eyes flashing with anger. "Mr. Ryder,
I must insist that you are mistaken, Tawny wouldn't do such. She is not causing any harm."
Ryder's eyes turned to Lilly, but his gaze kept drifting back to Tawny. He was determined to
maintain his tough exterior, but he couldn't help sneaking glances at her. "And who are you,
Ms. Lilly, to tell me how I speak to people?" he growled.
“Don't talk to her like that, you big brute!”
The restaurant fell silent, with all eyes on the confrontation. Ryder's face was red with rage,
but his eyes betrayed a flicker of attraction. Tawny's eyes flashed with defiance, but she
seemed to sense Ryder's hidden emotions. The air was thick with tension, and it was clear
that this was far from over.
"I must say, Mr. Ryder," Tawny began, her voice calm and collected, she wasn't planning on
screaming today and she won't let this big bully make her break her promise, "that I am
surprised by your accusations. I am merely exercising my right to free speech and assembly."
Ryder snorted. "Your right to free speech does not include the right to disrupt my business
operations, Ms. Tawny. I will not be intimidated by your protests. I always get what I want"
Tawny's smile grew wider, her eyes sparkling with determination. "I'm not trying to
intimidate you, Mr. Ryder," she said, her voice steady and calm. "I'm simply trying to bring
attention to the harm that your business is causing to our community, this is our home! You
want to destroy our way of life."
Ryder's face flushed with annoyance, but as he looked into Tawny's eyes, he felt a strange
sensation - a flutter in his chest, a sense of being off-balance. He couldn't quite explain it, but
he felt drawn to her, despite the fact that she was challenging everything he stood for, no one
has ever talked to him like this.
"My business is providing jobs and stimulating economic growth in this community," he
said, trying to sound confident and persuasive.
Tawny's eyes flashed with passion. "At what cost, Mr. Ryder?" she asked, her voice rising.
"You're destroying our environment and displacing long-time residents. Is that really worth
it? We are humans trying to make ends meet, and live peacefully"
As they argued, Ryder found himself getting more and more flustered. Not because he was
angry, but because he was struggling to reconcile his attraction to Tawny with his opposition to her views.
Tawny and Ryder glared at each other, their chests heaving with exertion. But as they stood
there, locked in a fierce stare, Ryder felt that strange sensation again - a sense of being drawn
to her, despite everything.
He looked away, feeling confused and off-balance. What was going on? He didn't have time
for these feelings, not now, not ever. But as he glanced back at Tawny, he couldn't shake the
sense that his life was about to get a whole lot more complicated..
This was a strange feeling, he has never felt this way before.
Ryder leaned back in his chair, trying to sound stern despite the sudden weakness in his
knees. "I don't have the permits to take over this community and do whatever I want with it...
yet," he said, his eyes locked on Tawny's determined face. "But I promise you, when I get
them, this restaurant is the first to go. And your protests will become illegal on my land."
Tawny's eyes flashed with anger, her voice rising as she spoke. "Well, until then, Roody," she
spat, emphasizing his name, "be prepared to see a lot of me on our land. We'll do everything
in our power to save our home and deny you that permit, because this isn't right, and you
know it!"
Her voice cracked with emotion, and Ryder felt a pang of guilt. He hadn't expected her to be
so passionate, so invested in this fight. But he pushed the feeling aside, reminding himself
that he was a businessman, not a sentimental fool, he wouldn't fall for her tactics.
"These people have nowhere to go but here," Tawny continued, her words tumbling out in a
rush. "And there are other places you could go and demolish, but you always pick on the
weaker side of town. I have no idea why you all want this place so much, but we're ready to
fight for it with everything we've got."
Ryder watched her, mesmerized by the fire in her eyes. He felt a sudden urge to reach out
and touch her, to calm her down and tell her everything would be okay. But he knew that
would be a mistake.
Instead, he smirked, trying to provoke her. "I admire your tenacity and strength, darling," he
said, his voice dripping with sarcasm. "You should hold on to it, because you'll need it when
you move out."
Tawny's face flushed with anger, and Ryder felt a thrill of excitement. He was getting under
her skin, and he knew it. But as he looked into her eyes, he saw something there that gave
him pause. Something that looked almost like... attraction.
Tawny's eyes narrowed, her jaw clenched in anger. "You're enjoying this, aren't you?" she
spat, her voice low "You're enjoying the fact that you're hurting people, destroying their
homes and businesses, their way of life."
Ryder shrugged, his smirk still plastered on his face. "I'm just doing what needs to be done,"
he said, his voice dripping with condescension. "This community is dying, the people are all old, Tawny. It's a relic of the past. And I'm the one who's going to bring it into the 21st
century."
Tawny's face was red with rage, her eyes blazing with fury. "You have no idea what this
community means to us," she said, her voice trembling with emotion. "You have no idea
what it's like to grow up here, to raise your family here, to belong to something so beautiful,
to have your entire life wrapped up in this place."
Ryder leaned forward, his eyes glinting with amusement. "I think I have a pretty good idea,
Tawny," he said, his voice low and husky. "And I think you're just scared of change."
Tawny's eyes flashed with anger, and for a moment, Ryder thought she was going to lunge at
him. But then, she seemed to collect herself, her face smoothing out into a calm, determined
mask.
"I'm not scared of change, Roody," she said, her voice steady and firm. "I'm scared of people
like you, who think they can just come in here and destroy everything we hold dear, and just
step all over us like we're nothing. But I'm not going to let that happen. I'm going to fight you
every step of the way. And I will win, you can bet on that, Roody"
Ryder grinned, feeling a thrill of excitement. He loved a good challenge, and Tawny was
definitely proving to be one. "I'm looking forward to it, Tawny," he said, his voice dripping
with anticipation.
