PROLOGUE
Sienna The darkness was all around me. Everywhere I looked all I could see was blackness. I felt like the night was a dark cloud enveloping me with the thick intensity of a living entity that was looking to crush me. I couldn’t make out anything. Buildings, people, vehicles, trees. Nothing could be seen. Just black. Black everywhere. As I was standing in the darkness looking around, I heard a piercing scream. It started off as a shrill scream of fright which then morphed into a scream of pain, then the noise was cut off abruptly. Before I could process what I had just heard, there was another scream, then another, until the night was filled with blood curdling screams coming from every direction. “Sienna, Sienna, listen to me, quickly. You have to get out of here. You have to leave before anyone finds you,” my mother said as she appeared out of the darkness and grabbed my wrist. Before I could think, she began dragging me along behind her. As I ran stumbling behind her, I could still hear the screams in the distance. My mother suddenly came to a stop and knelt down, dragging me to the ground with her. As I knelt there in the darkness, I could feel myself growing anxious. Who was out there? Who was doing this? Where was my father? Where were our pack warriors? “Where’s dad? Where are the warriors?” I whispered to my mother. “Shh,” she hissed back. Suddenly we heard the sounds of footsteps heading our way. I began to feel like I couldn't breathe as fear began to consume me. "Mom, what is happening?" I asked, trying to question her again. I was feeling scared now about what she had said about me having to leave. The thought was totally terrifying. This was my home. I had never left our pack land before, and now I had been awoken in the middle of the night because of an attack on our pack, and told by my own mother that I had to leave my home. "Please, Sienna, baby. I know you're scared, and I understand that, I do. But now is not the time for questions," she replied. “I need you to get away from here. You have to go somewhere where you will be safe.” My mother stood up and began walking again, and I followed along behind her. It didn't take me long to realise that she was leading me to where the pack vehicles were parked. As we got closer to the cars, I grabbed her wrist and pulled her to a stop. “Wait. You’re coming with me, right?” I asked her. “I can’t go with you baby. I need to be here. I need to do my job as a Luna to this pack. But I need to do my job as a mother right now and get you out of here,” she told me. She continued towards the cars and I followed her wondering how I was supposed to get out of here. I was twelve years old. Did she expect me to drive out of here? I had never driven a car before in my life. My mother stopped at one of the SUV's and turned to look at me. “I can’t drive,” I told her hurriedly. “I know that. Calm down,” she replied. Before I could say anything more, another person joined us. “Sara, thank the Goddess, you made it. You have to get her out of here. Please Sara, get my baby out of here to safety,” my mother told her. “Yes Luna. I will get her away from here. I promise you,” Sara told her. “Sienna, get in the car,” my mother told me pushing me towards the back seat of the car. “We don’t have time, hurry up,” she added. Once I was in the car, she hurriedly shut the door and looked at Sara saying, “Go. Get her out of here. Now.” We drove off, and as we drove, I could still hear screaming in the distance. I hurriedly put my seat belt on and glanced in the direction of where my families Alpha house was located. I could see a strange orange haze in that direction that was slightly lighting up the darkness. Sara began speeding down the dirt road that would take us to the main highway. "What is that orange color over there in the darkness?" I asked, as the feeling of fear began to creep through me more intensely. "Fire," Sara said as she, looked out of the window towards the direction of my house. "Fire? Wait a minute. Are you saying my house is on fire?" I asked her, worrying about my parents. "It very well could be. Now that the attack has been going for a while, I expect that a lot of buildings could have been set alight by now. The wolves who attacked will be inflicting as much structural damage as they can. They will burn as many houses and buildings as they can to put financial stress on whatever pack members remain. Maximum damage...," she explained, as she focused her gaze on the road ahead of us once more. "Where are we going? We should be helping my parents! We should be finding out what is burning and helping to put the fire out!" I told her, not feeling right about fleeing while our pack was still being attacked. "Sienna, the pack is under attack. At the moment, the most important thing for us to do is protect you. That’s why your mother put you in this car. You are the future of this pack,” Sara explained. "But what about my parents?" I asked her. “How will we know if they are, okay?” "I am sure they will be fine. Your father has his warriors and higher-ranking wolves train religiously for incidents like this. Your parents will have enough protection. We just need to keep you safe so that your parents won't be distracted by worrying about your safety. Knowing you are safe will enable them to what they need to do for the good of the pack," Sara explained. "You were put into my care for tonight. So, I am going to do what I promised your mother I would do, and that is keep you safe," she added. "Can you please tell me where we are going?" I asked, as I found myself beginning to shake in fear. "I don't exactly know yet. Your mother gave me an envelope and told me to read it once we were far enough away to be safe," Sara replied. With that, the car became silent as we sped through the darkness. I stared out my window in silence. I can't see anything now. It was just pitch black out there. For the first time in my life, I was afraid of the dark.
