Chapter 1: The Promise That Wasn't Kept
Aria stood by the window, watching the distant city lights twinkle like stars scattered across the skyline. The world outside felt unreachable, almost like it belonged to someone else. But inside her small apartment, everything felt heavy—pain, betrayal, and the weight of broken promises. She never thought she’d end up here, alone, carrying the memories of a love that had once felt so certain.
It had been a month since Theo left. A month since his promise—“I’ll never leave you."—became just an empty memory. She could still hear his voice, the warmth in his tone when he made that vow. His hand had been in hers, his eyes filled with hope. She believed every word.
And now? Now, she had nothing but the shattered pieces of that promise.
She wrapped her arms around herself, as if trying to hold together what was left of her heart. No matter how hard she tried, the memories refused to fade. The nights spent talking for hours, the laughter they shared, the way he held her when she was sad—it all haunted her.
A part of her had been so sure Theo was her forever. But forever turned out to be a lie.
A Love That Was Never Real
Aria closed her eyes, forcing herself to stop thinking about him. But just as she did, an even sharper memory hit her—the day she learned the truth.
She had been out at a café, trying to distract herself with work, when her phone lit up with a message from a mutual friend.
"Aria… I think you should see this."
Attached was a photo. Theo. With another girl.
Aria had stared at it, her heart pounding so hard she thought it might break through her ribs. In the picture, Theo had his arm around the girl, smiling like he had no care in the world. The caption? "New beginnings."
She had felt sick.
Theo had told her he was focusing on his studies, that his family was strict, that he needed time. But it had all been a lie.
She had helped him, encouraged him, loved him—only for him to move on like she never mattered.
The pain was still fresh. She blinked back the tears threatening to spill, inhaling deeply. She had cried enough over him.
Her phone buzzed again, pulling her from her thoughts. A message from her best friend, Liza.
“Are you okay? You’ve been quiet lately. Let’s talk soon, okay?"
Aria sighed. Liza had been checking in on her every day, but Aria didn’t have the strength to keep saying she was fine. Because she wasn’t.
Instead of replying, she set the phone down. What could she even say? That every night, she replayed the past, wondering why she wasn’t enough? That every time she closed her eyes, she saw Theo’s face, his smile—only for it to turn into a reminder of what he did?
A Sudden Visit
Her thoughts were interrupted by the sound of the doorbell.
She frowned. Who could it be at this hour?
Hesitating for a moment, she made her way to the door, heart pounding. She wasn’t expecting anyone. Maybe Liza had come over unannounced?
Taking a deep breath, she gripped the handle and pulled the door open.
Theo.
Aria’s breath hitched.
He stood there, looking different—tired, worn down, almost… guilty. His usual confident posture was gone. His eyes, once so full of warmth, now held something else.
Regret.
She froze. The air felt heavy between them, the silence thick with all the words left unsaid.
"What are you doing here?" she finally asked, her voice colder than she intended.
Theo took a hesitant step forward but stopped before crossing the threshold. "I… I had to see you." His voice was low, uncertain.
Aria’s grip on the door tightened. "Why?"
He let out a shaky breath. "Because I can’t keep running from what I did to you." He swallowed hard. "Aria… I’m so sorry."
Two words.
That was all it took to make her heart clench.
She should have slammed the door in his face. She should have told him to leave, to never speak to her again.
But instead, she stared at him, waiting.
Theo ran a hand through his hair, looking like he was struggling to find the right words. "I know I don’t deserve another chance. I know I messed up. But I need you to know that… leaving you was the biggest mistake of my life."
Aria scoffed. Now he realized that?
She shook her head, stepping back. "You don’t get to say that, Theo. You don’t get to show up here, after everything, and act like sorry is enough."
"I know it’s not." His voice cracked slightly. "I just… I need you to hear me out."
Aria felt the anger bubbling inside her. Hear him out? After everything?
"Did you ever think about how I felt when you left?" she snapped, her voice rising. "Did you ever stop to think about what you did to me? How I cried myself to sleep every night, wondering what I did wrong? And all this time, you were with someone else."
Theo flinched. "It wasn’t like that—"
"Then what was it like?" Aria cut him off, crossing her arms. "Because from where I stand, it looks exactly like that."
He was silent.
And that was all the answer she needed.
Aria inhaled sharply, pushing down the lump in her throat. She refused to cry in front of him. Not anymore.
"You made your choice, Theo," she said, her voice steadier now. "You chose her. You left me. And now, you want to come back as if I’m supposed to forget all of it?"
Theo opened his mouth but then closed it. His shoulders slumped. "I don’t expect you to forgive me, Aria. I just… I couldn’t live with myself if I didn’t tell you the truth."
She swallowed hard, fighting back the emotions threatening to break through. She had waited for this moment—the moment he’d regret everything.
But now that it was here… it didn’t feel as satisfying as she thought it would.
She took a deep breath and stepped back inside.
"Goodbye, Theo."
And before he could say another word, she gently closed the door.
She stood there for a moment, heart racing, hands shaking.
She expected to feel relieved. But instead, all she felt was… empty.
Was she strong enough to finally let go? Was she strong enough to move on?
She didn’t know the answer.
But one thing was clear: she had to try.
For herself.
For the person she was before Theo ever came into her life.
