IRIS POV – CHAPTER 4
Find a mask and wear it well,
So your true identity no one can tell.
Masquerade Ball.
Your presence is requested for a festive evening of intrigue, mystery and fantasy.
ps. Bring your senses. If you're lucky enough, you might meet your mate.
I’m buzzing with excitement. This will be my first time attending The Mate Ball. Tonight's the night I might find my mate.
Tyler never let me go anywhere outside out our territory. Heck, he never let's me walk in the pack grounds. I'd have to sneak out late at night when his sleeping.
All unmated wolves will be attending this ball. This year, it's hosted by Moon Valley Pack.
I’ve pictured this night for many years, never getting the chance to actually go and experience it.
Mom is doing last-minute alterations to my dress. I’ve decided to wear the pack's colors, which are red and silver.
“You’re excited?” Mom looks up from the sewing machine with a smile.
“Of cause I am! I’ve been waiting for this for years!” I squealed in excitement.
“I’m surprised his going too, seeing that he never wanted a mate," She voices with a curious look on her face.
“Exactly. It’s probably because I’m going. You know, he will find any excuse to protect me once again.” I shrug. I know he says that he will back off, but come on, it’s Tyler. He never will.
“I’m almost done. Did you mind link Islyn to come and do your hair?”
“Yes, she’ll be here in a minute. Taking her forever to get here with that huge belly.” Mom giggles.
“Mom, what if I find my mate tonight? What will happen? I'm so afraid. What if I'm not what he expects?" A sudden feeling of self-doubt washes over me like a storm.
"Oh, sweetheart." Mom drops the dress to come over and gives me an assuring hug.
"You're everything and more. Of course you'll be everything he expects. He's been waiting for you his entire life. The other half of his soul." She smiles. " You know, I felt the exact same way before I met your father, and my mother told me these exact words." I look up, and I can see the love in her eyes.
"One plus one will always make two. But two parts of a soul together will always make one. And I always carry those words with me as a reminder that the other part of my soul will always complete me, and that's my mate, your father." She smiled with all the love in her eyes, and I never felt so confident after hearing those words and seeing how much love a mate can have for another.
I smiled. "Thank you, mom."
"You're always welcome, sweetheart." She picks up the dress and continues with the alterations.
"Do you think Tyler will be mad once I find my mate?" I ask.
She shrugs. “You know your brother will always be your brother. Protective..” she rolls her eyes and continues. “But he can’t do anything about it. It’s your mate. There’s no way he would be able to keep you two apart.”
“Please. If Tyler could lock me up, he would do it.” I roll my eyes. “Then that’s not good parenting from my side.” She smiles. “I don’t know why he doesn’t believe in the Mate bond. When your dad and I met, we instantly fell in love. Damn, we hadn’t even met before I was jumping his..”
“AHHH! TMI! Please, I don’t need to hear it!” I cover my ears.
She gives a hearty laugh. “But honestly, your father and I always believed in the Mate bond. All of us do, just not Tyler. I don’t know where he got the idea that it’s stupid.”
She stands up and brings over the dress. “There you go, all done, darling.”
I smile. “Thanks mom"
A knock sounds on the door before Islyn pops her head in. “Can I come in?”
“You’re already halfway there.” She giggles and makes her way into the room.
Islyn and I have been best friends since forever. I'm bummed that she won't be joining me. Ever since we were pups, Islyn and I have been inseparable. We are like Yin and Yang. Total opposites that completed each other. I swear, if it were our choice, I'd choose her as my mate.
I was always the quiet one. The shy, nerdy little sister of the Big Bad Alpha. The one who could never do anything for herself because of her overprotective brother, who always felt the need to come to her rescue. I was classified as the weak one. The loner and not the most popular.
Whereas Islyn was the go-to girl. The cheerleader among a crowd full of nerds. The girl everyone wanted to be friends with. The popular and most beautiful in the pack. Every guy crushed on her, even Tyler. He was so madly in love with her that we all thought she'd be his mate. But she was mated to our Gamma, Dean, instead. And now, pregnant with triplets.
"Wow, that dress is beautiful." Islyn appears in the doorway, blooming with a swollen belly.
"Thanks! you know mother is a genuis with a sewing machine." I gestured for her to come in so that we can start with my hair.
“Wow! You’re really big! When are you popping?” Mom asks as she stares at Islyns' stomach.
“Anytime now. And I promise, this is my last. I’ll cut Dean's d**k off myself if I have to. He can never just fill me up with pups like that.” She gives a nervous laugh.
“Yeah, it looks like Dean wants an army. Can’t blame him. It runs in his blood.” I say sarcastically.
The Williams clan always prides themselves on having 5 or more pups. Not one single soul in that bloodline is allowed to produce 4 pups or fewer. They're as fertile as a tree growing weed.
She sneers at me. “I swear it does! I only wanted 2 kids, and now I’m going to have 7!”
“Are you carrying triplets!?” Mom gasps.
Islyn nods and gestures for me to have a seat so that she can start with my hair.
“Mom, you’re the only one finding out now, and she’s about to pop again. I hope you’re going to name at least one after me? Iris is a beautiful name.” I give her a smile in the mirror.
“If you want it to go for a boy, then sure.” She laughs.
I wonder how many kids my mate would want. I’ve always wanted five. A set of twins should be included.
After pinning my hair in a curled bun and applying light makeup, I finally put on my dress.
My mother did an excellent job. A low V-neck that almost touches my belly with a slit that stops at my upper thigh. The flow of the silk smooths its way each time I move. It feels as soft as a baby’s bottom.
“Wow, you look beautiful!” Islyn is the first to break the silence while mom stands there with a tear in her eye.
“Mom, It’s not my wedding day. No need for tears” I roll my eyes.
“Agh! I never knew one could be more beautiful than they already are.” Mom says while she kisses me on the forehead.
“Thank you, mom." I smile. Looking at the clock, I see that it’s almost time to leave. “Well then, looks like it’s time to get going.”
We all make our way downstairs to the foyer. Tyler is already waiting for me with his tight fitted black suit and red shirt.
He takes my arm and hooks it with his. “You look beautiful, sis. Shall we?” I nod and smile.
Before the door closes, I hear Islyn shout. “Don’t forget to tie your glass slippers!”
I hope I won’t need to run away from my prince charming in order to tie those glass slippers.
