Sophia Carter begins her first year at university expecting freedom, new friendships, and the excitement of discovering who she truly is. What she doesn’t expect is the quiet curiosity she feels when she walks into her Modern Literature class and meets her lecturer, Daniel Reyes. Calm, intelligent, and serious about his work, Daniel is everything Sophia finds intriguing. At first, their interactions are nothing more than simple conversations about books and assignments. To Daniel, Sophia is just another student—bright, curious, and passionate about learning.

But as the semester continues, their paths begin crossing more often. Sophia’s determination and honesty slowly catch Daniel’s attention in ways he never expected. What begins as harmless academic discussions gradually grows into something deeper and far more complicated. The problem is simple: their relationship crosses a line that should never be crossed.

As rumors start spreading across campus and Sophia’s friends become aware of the secret growing between them, the pressure around their connection begins to build. Daniel knows that getting too close to Sophia could destroy his career and reputation, while Sophia struggles with the emotional confusion of loving someone she knows she shouldn’t.

Torn between desire, responsibility, and the consequences of their choices, Sophia and Daniel find themselves trapped in a relationship that was never meant to happen. As feelings deepen and reality closes in, they must face the painful question: Is love worth risking everything, or are some lines meant to remain uncrossed?

CHAPTER ONE- The first day
The morning sun stretched across the wide campus of Westbridge University, warming the tall buildings and casting long shadows across the walkways. Students moved in every direction, some rushing toward lecture halls while others stood in groups, laughing loudly as if they had known each other for years. Sophia Carter stood near the entrance of the humanities building, clutching her phone tightly in her hand. Her eyes scanned the unfamiliar campus with a mixture of excitement and nervousness. It was her first day at university. She had imagined this moment so many times while she was still in high school. University meant freedom. It meant independence. No strict uniforms, no teachers reminding you about homework every five minutes, and no parents constantly checking what you were doing. But now that she was actually here, the campus felt enormous. “Are you going to stand there forever, or are we going to find our class?” Sophia turned when she heard the voice beside her. It was Maya, her roommate and quickly becoming one of her closest friends. Maya was the kind of person who looked confident everywhere she went. Her curly hair bounced slightly as she spoke, and she had a playful smile that rarely left her face. “I’m just… taking everything in,” Sophia said with a small laugh. “This place is huge.” “That’s because it is huge,” Maya replied. “Come on, we’re going to be late for our first lecture.” Sophia nodded and quickly followed her as they joined the stream of students heading into the building. Inside, the hallways buzzed with conversation. The walls were covered with posters about student clubs, upcoming events, and volunteer programs. The smell of coffee drifted through the air as students passed by carrying cups from the nearby café. Sophia checked her phone again. “Room 214,” she said. “That’s upstairs,” Maya replied, already heading toward the stairs. They climbed the steps along with several other students. Sophia noticed how different everyone looked compared to high school. Some students dressed casually in hoodies and jeans, while others looked like they had spent hours planning their outfits. No one seemed to care what anyone else was doing. That alone made Sophia feel a little more relaxed. When they reached Room 214, the door was already open. Students were slowly filling the lecture hall, choosing seats and chatting with friends. Sophia and Maya found seats near the middle. “Perfect spot,” Maya said as she dropped her bag on the desk. Sophia nodded but barely heard her. Her attention drifted toward the front of the room, where a tall man was arranging papers on the lecturer’s desk. He looked younger than most professors Sophia had imagined. Probably in his late twenties. His dark hair was neatly styled, and he wore a simple black shirt with sleeves rolled slightly to his elbows. There was something calm and focused about the way he moved. “Hey,” Maya whispered, nudging Sophia. “Why are you staring like that?” Sophia quickly looked away. “I’m not staring.” “Yes, you are,” Maya said with a grin. “You’ve been looking at him for like ten seconds.” Sophia rolled her eyes. “I was just curious. He looks too young to be a lecturer.” “Well, apparently he is,” Maya said. “And if he’s teaching this class, we’re going to be seeing him a lot.” Before Sophia could respond, the man at the front of the room cleared his throat softly. The chatter in the lecture hall gradually faded. He picked up a marker and wrote his name on the board. Daniel Reyes Sophia leaned slightly forward in her seat. Daniel turned toward the class, scanning the room briefly before speaking. “Good morning, everyone,” he said calmly. “Welcome to Introduction to Modern Literature.” His voice was steady and confident, but not overly strict. It was the kind of voice that naturally made people listen. “My name is Daniel Reyes,” he continued. “I’ll be your lecturer this semester.” Several students quickly opened their laptops or notebooks. Daniel rested one hand on the desk. “Before we begin, I want to make something very clear,” he said. “University is very different from high school. No one is going to chase you for assignments. No one will force you to attend class.” He paused briefly. “But if you want to succeed here, you will need discipline.” Sophia listened carefully. There was something about the way he spoke that made the room feel more focused. Daniel continued explaining the course structure, assignments, and expectations. Sophia tried to take notes, but every now and then she found herself looking up at him again. It wasn’t just that he was young. He carried himself differently from most teachers she had known before. Calm. Serious. Almost distant. As the lecture continued, Daniel began discussing the first topic of the semester. “Literature,” he said, writing another word on the board, “is not just about stories. It’s about understanding people. Their fears, their hopes, and their choices.” He turned back toward the class. “Sometimes, the most powerful stories are the ones about relationships.” Sophia felt strangely drawn into the discussion. Daniel asked several questions during the lecture, inviting students to share their opinions. Most students remained quiet. But at one point, Sophia slowly raised her hand. Daniel noticed immediately. “Yes?” he said, looking in her direction. Sophia felt several students glance toward her. She hesitated for a second before speaking. “I think… stories about relationships are powerful because people can relate to them,” she said. “Everyone has experienced complicated emotions at some point.” Daniel studied her for a moment. Then he nodded slightly. “That’s a good observation.” Sophia quickly looked down at her notebook, trying not to smile too much. Maya leaned toward her. “Look at you,” she whispered. “Already impressing the lecturer.” Sophia nudged her arm lightly. “Be quiet.” The rest of the lecture passed quickly. When the class finally ended, students began packing their bags and heading toward the door. Sophia and Maya joined the crowd leaving the room. But just as Sophia stepped into the hallway, she realized she had forgotten her pen on the desk. “Wait,” she said. “I left something.” “I’ll meet you outside,” Maya replied. Sophia hurried back into the lecture hall. Most students were already gone. Daniel stood near the desk organizing his papers. Sophia quickly grabbed her pen from the desk. As she turned to leave, Daniel spoke. “You asked a good question earlier.” Sophia froze for a moment before turning around. “Oh… thank you.” Daniel gave a small nod. “What’s your name?” “Sophia,” she replied. “Sophia,” he repeated thoughtfully. “First year?” “Yes.” He picked up a notebook from the desk. “You seem interested in the subject,” he said. “That’s a good start.” Sophia felt slightly nervous standing there. “Thank you,” she said again. Daniel glanced briefly at the clock on the wall. “Well, I won’t keep you,” he said. “Enjoy your first week at university.” Sophia nodded and walked toward the door. But as she stepped into the hallway again, something about the brief conversation stayed in her mind. It wasn’t anything special. Just a few simple words. Yet somehow, it felt like the beginning of something she didn’t fully understand yet. Outside, Maya was waiting near the stairs. “What took you so long?” she asked. “I just grabbed my pen,” Sophia replied. Maya studied her face for a second. “Did you talk to him?” Sophia hesitated slightly. “Just for a second.” Maya’s smile immediately grew wider. “Oh, this is going to be interesting.” Sophia laughed and shook her head. “Relax. It was nothing.” But as they walked across the campus together, Sophia couldn’t help glancing back once toward the building they had just left. She had only met Daniel Reyes for a few minutes. And yet something told her that this semester might turn out very differently than she had expected. She just didn’t know how complicated things would eventually become.
