CHAPTER 1
Chapter 1
Destiny’s POV
As a young detective my life was busy. Too busy for dating and such although there were lonely nights where I felt sorry for myself. For the most part I was completely satisfied with my life as it was. It was another one of those lonely nights, I decided to walk from the station to my apartment. I was halfway down Melton Avenue when I heard a woman screaming. I pulled my weapon and entered the alley where the noise was coming from. I found her, she was backed up against the wall with a large dog snarling at her. The husky type dog was the largest I had ever seen and was dripping saliva at her. I asked her what in the world she was doing down an alley this late hat night. When she started to reply the dog snarled and jumped at her biting her in the neck area. I quickly shot the dog and ran to help the woman. She said, “don’t hurt him he’s, my boyfriend.” So yes, she was delusional. I told her I had dispatched the dog, but she insisted that he was fine and that I shouldn’t hurt him because he was drunk. I asked her what her name was, and she said “Grace”. Then she tried to stand. I held her down as the wound in her neck was…. almost healed.
“what’s going on here” I asked suspiciously and just then the dog got up, shook himself off and unceremoniously bit me on the leg.
“Now look what you did Jerry. now we are going to have to be responsible for her and I don’t want to do that.” She was having a one-sided conversation with the dog. When all of a sudden the dog changed into…..a very naked young man.
“I’m sorry babe but she shot me.” Jerry the dog man said. No one was going to believe me I rolled my eyes at the young couple. “what’s your name officer?” Jerry asked as he donned a pair of basketball shorts the girl had in her bag.
Destiny Carmichael” I replied. “What are you?”
“Let’s not talk here.” Grace responded. “Do you mind coming with us to that bar over there. Its safer believe it or not.”
“Fine” I answered as we walked out of the alley and across the street. We entered the Wolves Den bar and walked to a booth in the back.
The bartender followed us and said, “I cut you off Jerry, go home.”
“I know” Jerry hung his head in shame. “I bit the cop.”
“I’ll call the council.” The bartender said.
“why call city council, its just a dog bite, I will get it looked at”
Jerry regarded her dumbfoundedly and said “We both know its not just a dog bite lady, I mean Destiny. I am going to werewolf jail, and you will become a werewolf on the next full moon. If you live through the shift that is and its, not the city council but the werewolf council”
This was all overwhelming “if I live through the change the werewolf council and werewolf jail?” this is some kind of joke and its not funny. Just then a group of older gentlemen in suits came into the bar and were directed to our booth. They asked a lot of questions spoke among themselves and declared Jerry incarcerated for 90 days if I lived and for life if I died. I was in shock. They then asked me to go with them back to my apartment. They assigned Grace to be my mentor and to report notable changes to the council. The next full moon was in three days.
Grace POV
“I need to call my alpha and let him know we have a potential new pack member” she said. She made a phone call and talked a few minutes then hung up. “He will come to meet you later. He is very busy” she said.” Tell me about your job.”
“Ok” Destiny replied. “I am a detective at metro central. I mostly do homicide and missing persons. I have been a detective for six years and a cop for three years before that. My partners name is Adrian and he is pretty cool. I don’t have an active case right now, so we are going over cold cases and trying to solve them. What do you do Grace.”
“I work for Roman Securities as a data input specialist” Grace said with pride. “Its our pack’s company. I have worked there since I graduated high school six years ago. Jerry works with me although he is in jail for the time being. And I know your partner Adrian, he is a werewolf as well.”
Destiny drove Grace to her apartment to get clothes for the next four days and then returned home. The deal was that Grace would stay with Destiny for the duration until the change then they would see each other nightly as a mentor/mentee type of relationship. They drank some coco and went to bed. The next morning they went to their respective jobs after exchanging phone numbers.
Grace walked into the building and immediately went downstairs to the incarceration chambers to visit Jerry a few minutes before work started. The jails here were actually clean with a toilet and a sink in each cell. Unlike the cells on pack lands that were dirty and dank. They only problem was a mild rat population. The man next to Jerry, a rogue named Jackson found pleasure in catching and throwing the rats at people. So, Grace left after just a few minutes of visiting time. She went up to her cubicle on the sixth floor and settled for the day. She had three reams of paper for input this morning so she planned on being very busy. She went down to the cafeteria for lunch and had a club sandwich with fries. She usually had two sandwiches, but her appetite was off with Jerry in jail. Then it happened Veronica came into the cafeteria. She was a b*tch who loved to stir trouble.
“Grace” she said loudly enough for everyone to hear. “So sorry to hear about Jerry going to jail and biting a human even…how embarrassing for you.” Veronica was the local gossip/mean girl who thrived on other people’s humiliation and discomfort. She was known for breaking up families and wreaking havoc on the community. She only got away with it because her brother, Cameron, was the beta of the pack. “I bet you just want to run, and hide don’t you. You poor thing.” With a sickening smile and an evil glint she turned and walked out of the cafeteria, her work done here for the day. I just buried my head in my hands and cried.
Destiny’s POV
I limped into work the wound on my leg festering enough to draw attention to the pronounced limp I was sporting. “What the h*ll happened to you?” Adrian asked concerned enough to bend over and look at the wound.
“I was bit by a dog” I answered ruefully. “F**cker took a chunk out and now its festering.” Im just planning on desk work today, you can do the leg work. Adrian scoffed but agreed, looking again at my wound in disgust.
“You need to get that looked at” Adrian said with concern. It was close to lunch time and the wound had soaked through the bandage and was smelling. So, I allowed Adrian to take me to the urgent care clinic down the street. The doctor took one look at it and gave me iv antibiotics then cleaned and dressed the wound again. He then lectured me on the importance of changing my dressing often enough. I tried to tell him I was changing it every two hours, but he didn’t seem to believe me. Instead he just gave me a bunch of bandages to take care of my wound and told me to come back in 2 days I was wondering if I would be alive then because that was the day I was to shift.
After the doctor's office Adrian took me back to work and I worked at the desk the rest of the afternoon. I was working on the Cold Case of a young girl who had went missing several years ago and had not been seen since. It was a very sad case as she was only about 3 years old, she would be six now, but I doubted she was still alive. I worked until five p.m. and then went home to my apartment finding Grace they're waiting for me. We cooked dinner together and I talked to her about being a werewolf apparently werewolves heal very quickly, and some are born with gifts and some are not I hope that I would have some gifts that would help me with my job if I survived. The thought kept plaguing my mind that I was going to die in 2 days. No matter how much I tried to prep myself it was enough to make me a nervous wreck. I poured myself a glass of wine and asked Grace if she wanted one, but she didn't drink she said alcohol did not really affect werewolves anyway they had to drink a lot to get drunk that's why she was so upset with Jerry because he had been drinking all day long, hard liquor, and had gotten himself drunk. It was something that a werewolf had to try to do, they just didn't get drunk. So, a drunk werewolf was something rare. We made spaghetti for dinner with salad and French bread. It was very good. We talked a little bit more about being a werewolf and went to bed.
Grace's POV
The next morning, I got up and went to work and of course Veronica was waiting by the door as she knew I would go to the jail cells to see and visit Jerry for a few moments she was such a b****. “Oh poor Grace you have to go visit your husband in jail isn't that sad.” she said loudly I just ignored her and kept walking. I went down to the jail to see Jerry and was hit in the head by the neighboring prisoner with a rat it was disgusting I talked to Jerry for a few minutes and tried to tell him that how strong this girl was; that Destiny would survive and that it would only be a three-month internment for him he was starting to get depressed they don't have any daylight down there and there's no exercise no leaving the cell just breakfast lunch and dinner and a visitor or two. I left the cells and went up to my cubicle to work. Today I had two reams of paper which was not as bad as yesterday I was finished by eleven a.m., so I went down for lunch and ordered two club sandwiches which was my normal meal. I saw Veronica but instead of eating in the cafeteria I took my lunch with me back up to my cubicle and completely ignored her. She was such a b**** I ate my lunch in peace and went and retrieved two more reams of paper for Data entry. It took me until four thirty to finish so I didn't go for any more reams that day I just decided to go home or back to Destiny's house as we had moved in together for the duration. Destiny didn't get home until after six that night so I had to wait on her front porch for her but it wasn't bad. It allowed me to think about Jerry and what was going on the fight we had and how well the bite was improving with antibiotics. it meant that she was healing which was a good sign that she would survive the shift I honestly think that she will survive, and Jerry will be out in 90 days. I mean I will have to petition the council to let him out early as this was not a normal thing for him to do he was a good gentle soul he was just upset that we had lost a pup
