Crown prince
Chapter 1
A huge brown wolf lunged towards the Crown Prince, its heavy paws pounding the ground, making the earth tremble, and its sharp claws swinging in the air, ready to tear him apart at first grab.
The Crown Prince’s small figure in front of this massive wolf sent chills among the crowd.
“He’s going to get himself killed!”
Those that cared about him whispered among themselves, while those that didn’t care just wanted the wolf to stomp on him and get the fight over with.
Arian, on the other hand, didn’t budge.
He stood his ground and held his sword steadfastly against the beast charging towards him, his eyes fixed on his target and the wolf’s movements.
He didn’t even have the slightest thought of being afraid.
He had fought countless battles and won each time, but he had never faced a warrior like him, and in his full wolf form at that.
The prince’s physical body, being strong yet small in size against the best warrior in the pack, who was shifted, heavily built, and dangerous, made it seem more likely to be a lost battle.
He agreed to the fight like an insane, innocent man who was desperately asking to die. But he needed them to see him and watch him.
The wolf lunged at him, and the crowd’s banter got even louder at that moment.
Prince Arian dodged it at the last possible second.
His body rolled on the ground under the wolf’s claws, and his sword pierced through the wolf’s forearm before he pushed himself back onto his feet.
Blood splashed across the ground.
Gasps escaped the crowd. He had left a big cut on the wolf, but he had also sustained a sharp cut on his own left shoulder.
The wolf roared as if he had been mocked.
“Come on!”
Arian signaled for him to come at him.
He ignored the pain from his cut, and he held the sword even more tightly this time.
With full force, the wolf jumped at him, pushing and pinning him down to the ground. The crowd gasped, believing the fight was finally over.
But before the wolf could sink his claws into him, Prince Arian drove his sword deep into his throat.
The wolf froze.
Blood poured from his mouth as he choked on his own blood, slowly turning to the side. One more movement and the sword would have ended his life.
He slowly turned over to the side, shifted back into his human form, and removed his claws from the prince’s waist, yielding to him.
“Have my sword cleaned up and return to my chamber after your treatment.”
Prince Arian slowly stood on his feet, holding his wounded waist before facing the crowd.
Silence took over as they watched him limp toward the Alpha Regent, who had signaled to him. Arian bowed his head to him in respect.
“You have done well.”
The Alpha’s pale face looked down at Prince Arian from where he was seated.
Arian was worried about him. His condition seemed to be worsening even more than the previous night when he had seen him from afar in the council room.
“Have the royal doctor treat you in my chamber,” he added, and rose before the whole pack as they did the same.
The Alpha Regent was escorted out while the crowd remained standing and silent until he was out of sight.
He watched his back till he was out of sight before heading to the restroom close to the battlefield. He washed his face and hands, released a deep breath, and stared back at his own face in the mirror.
Prince Arian knew that was not the end of it, but he wasn’t going to give up. He adjusted his deep black curly hair backward before heading out.
“My Prince.”
Aston, his right-hand man, handed him a towel to dry his face.
He could hear whispers from the ladies watching him, lustful stares from all angles, but he cared less about them. He had never cared about them anyways.
“I will be back soon.”
He returned the towel to Aston, ushering him to stand down and not accompany him to the Alpha’s chamber.
Prince Arian hadn’t walked too far when his cousins joined him from the opposite direction at the hallway.
“I heard you won the fight. Too bad I had to miss that,” the eldest one said to him with his hand in his pocket.
Straight face, cold glare void of emotion, and his figure standing out taller and stronger among the four of them.
“I don’t even know why he chose to suffer himself because it’s clear he’s never going to be the next Alpha with his disability,” the next cousin shrugged.
Strong body, same height as Prince Arian, with his face reflecting how disgusted he was with the idea of the prince trying to prove he could rule with the dueling.
The last born of the family walked silently beside his brother, showing no emotion, always having nothing to say. Not like he didn’t care, but he saw no reason why the throne would come to him anyways.
He just wanted the meeting to come to an end so he could go back to his business. He had chains of businesses he controlled and an empire of his own.
Among all of them, Prince Arian was the shortest, and the more the pack members believed he had no chance against them.
The door opened, and they walked inside the hall one after the other. The Alpha was already seated while the chef and cooks arranged the meals on the long center table.
They pulled out chairs for them, and they all took their seats. The dining started lightly with silence till the Alpha spoke up.
“Arian will be stepping up after me,” he stated his decision. Months had passed, and things had been turning around, but he had never mentioned whom he supposed would take over among them until now.
“How is that even possible? A wolf-less leader?! Tell another joke, Father!” Theron, the second cousin, dropped his cutlery at their father’s speech.
“He’s the rightful heir, and there shouldn’t be any confusion about that. I’m just his regent, after all,” he coughed amidst his speech.
“There’s no doubt about that, but he has no wolf to lead the people, which is why he hasn’t been able to take the throne since he came of age in the first place,” Cassian, the first cousin, said.
“He has won many wars and proved he could lead better than men with their wolves. His mate will support him where he lacks, and that’s final.” The Alpha Regent rose to his feet.
“Mate? Can a wolf-less man be mated to a stronger one now? I bet he doesn’t have any, and if he has, it will be a useless one like him.” Theron glared at Arian disgustingly.
“All of that is left to the Gods to decide, if they will be on his side or not,” the Alpha concluded.
“The fact remains, a wolf-less man cannot lead the pack, can he?” The last cousin, Aiden, finally said something.
