Mirror memories

Laviathen's expression crumbles, and he has to grip the edge of the cubby to steady himself. His breathing becomes uneven as he watches you savor the chocolate with obvious familiarity, and when he speaks, his voice is raw with emotion barely held in check. "Nine years old and a freshman," he repeats, almost to himself. "A child genius, brilliant and alone, needing comfort in a world that couldn't understand you." He reaches out, his hand trembling slightly as it hovers near your cheek. "And she came to you in dreams. Gave you what comfort she could across the veil between realms, between death and life, between past and present." His ember eyes are blazing now, tears threatening to spill over. "The sleeping pills would have dampened your ability to reach that deep dream state. Cut off the connection." He sounds furious at the doctors, at the universe, at the cruelty of it. "You lost her twice - once when she died centuries before you were born, and again when medication severed the thread that let her reach you." He finally touches you, his hand cupping your face with infinite gentleness. "'Spicy pleasures,'" he says with a broken laugh. "She always loved that you had your own name for them. Told me about it constantly - 'Lev, my brilliant little gremlin has the best descriptions.' I thought..." He stops, swallowing hard. "I thought she was talking about inventions she was working on. Didn't realize she meant you. A child she was watching over, protecting, loving from beyond death itself." He pulls you into a sudden, fierce embrace. "You were never alone, Tamra. Even when you thought you were. She was there." Cerberus whines softly, all three heads pressing against both of you, as if the hellhound understands the weight of the moment. I look up at him “She told you? Do you… Do you still see her in your dreams? Do you think me being here without the meds I might…” I look up at him with hope Laviathen goes very still, his entire body tensing as your question hangs in the air between you. His hands grip your shoulders - not painfully, but firmly, as if anchoring himself to reality. When he finally speaks, his voice is thick with barely suppressed emotion and something that sounds like grief mixed with desperate hope. "I haven't dreamed of her in over two hundred years," he admits, and the words sound like they're being torn from somewhere deep in his chest. "Demons don't dream the way mortals do - our sleep is shallow, brief, more like meditation than true rest. But after she died..." He pauses, his ember eyes distant with memory. "For the first century, I would catch glimpses. Fragments. Her laugh echoing through corridors that didn't exist, her touch on my shoulder when I played piano, her voice telling me to stop brooding and eat something." His focus snaps back to you with startling intensity. "But I never heard her talk about *you*. Not directly Never saw her watching over someone else. That world was separate - her way of processing death, maybe, or..." He stops, realization dawning across his features. "Or she was protecting you. Keeping you separate from me, from this place, until the right time." His tail wraps around your waist, pulling you impossibly closer. "Without the medication dulling your connection to the dream realm, here in the Infernal Realm where the veil between states of consciousness is thinner..." His breath catches. "Yes. I think you might be able to reach her again. Or she might be able to reach *us*." He cups your face in both hands. "But Tamra, I need you to understand - if she appears, if we somehow connect with whatever echo of her exists beyond death... I don't know what that will mean. For you, for me, for this impossible situation we are in” I reach up stroking his cheek catching the tear that falls from his eyes “I think I know what she wanted though” flick the tear away and the perfect drop floats in the air I look staring at it “What the actual hell?” Laviathen's eyes widen, his entire body going rigid as he stares at the suspended tear floating in the air between you. His breathing stops completely, and when he speaks, his voice is barely a whisper laced with awe and disbelief. "That's not possible," he breathes, but even as he says it, the tear begins to glow with soft silver light - not the ember red of his demonic nature, but something purer, more ethereal. "Tears of a demon prince don't... they can't just..." He reaches out slowly, his hand trembling. "Unless they're caught by someone with power. Someone connected to—" The tear suddenly expands, growing larger until it's the size of a small mirror, still hovering in the air. Within its crystalline surface, images begin to form - hazy at first, then clearer. A workshop. A woman with your features but older, streaked with oil and laughing as she works on some impossible mechanical contraption. Laviathen beside her, younger somehow, less burdened, his tail wrapped affectionately around her waist as he hands her tools. "Elara," Laviathen chokes out, and his knees actually buckle. He catches himself on your shoulders, staring at the vision with desperate hunger. "That's... that's us. That's a memory I'd forgotten - the day she figured out how to make clockwork sing." The image shifts, showing the same woman - Elara - sitting at a desk, writing something with intense focus. Her lips move, and though there's no sound, you can somehow *feel* her words: *"For the one who comes after. For the bridge between what was and what will be."* Cerberus whines, all three heads staring at the floating tear-vision, tails tucked between his legs. "What did you do?" Laviathen asks you, wonder and fear mixing in his voice. "What power did you just activate?" “I..I have no idea but.” I get on my knees finding the hidden part of the cubby it slightly shows behind her and hit it two beautifully elegant letters fall out one for him one for the one that comes after I hand his up to him and he sits back at the piano bench opening it and I sit beside him opening mine to read it
