Welcome Home

Reed’s POV “When will we be home?” My wolf Benne whined in my mind. I laughed to myself, what an impatient wolf. “- We only have an hour or so to go, you know this. Why so impatient today?-” “I erm, we have important places to be, yanno? Pack business and such.” I rolled my eyes, as if he was ever concerned with pack business. Maybe he just wanted to go on a good run. “-Fine, don’t tell me Benne.-” Truthfully, I was glad to be home. Training is fun and everything, but why did I have to travel to the castle to get training? Plus, having to spend any extra time with Dawson rubbed me the wrong way. He had one goal at any given time, which usually involved finding the nearest pretty Omega and trying to mount her as quickly as possible. I had to give it to the guy. He was a smooth talker, but that didn’t make him any less of a creep. I sat back, closing my eyes for a few minutes. It was still early and I wanted to take a nap. “No sleeping! We have to report right away.” Dawson called out. “I wasn’t sleeping, besides you are the one who insisted on not leaving last night because you wanted to spend one more night with Sharon.” We could have been home 12 hours ago. I looked out the window, the pack boundaries were within site, it meant we had a 10 minute drive to the pack house. “Not my fault.” He shrugged. “The things that women could do…. “ “Aren’t you worried your fated Mate will reject you for the number of women you have been with?” I scoffed. I knew very well this conversation would not be a productive one. “No, I am not. Who would reject me? I literally have girls lining up to get into my bed.” Dawson laughed as if I had just told the funniest joke. I was always raised that your fated mate was the most important person. It had only been a year and a half since I had turned 20, but I was hopeful to find her soon. “We will find our mate soon.” Benne said as if it was a fact I was not clued in to yet. “-I hope so, I really do.-” I looked out the window as we began to approach. From a distance, I could see the delivery truck pulling up and the driver standing outside. Dawson's phone starts ringing so he slows down to pick it up. “What do you need Greg? OK well, we are pulling up now. Is she really late again?” Dawsons sighs in annoyance as he maneuvers to park the truck. “Wait, I see her now, she is headed towards the side entrance. Yeah, we will deal with her later. Bye.” He said as he hung up the phone. “Haven’t even gone inside yet and that girl is making trouble….” As I stepped out of the truck, I saw Melody in the distance. Her blue-gray hazel eyes meet mine. “Mate!” Benne exclaims excitedly. “-f**k-” Benne is obviously confused as he whimpers at my response. “That is OUR mate.” He cries defensively. Think Reed…. This complicated things quite a bit. “Melody!” Dawson shouted. I watched as she scurried inside, no doubt that she was trying to pretend she hadn’t heard him. Yeah… I was certain she would reject us. Why would she not be afraid of the Beta from the pack that killed her family? I wanted to do nothing more than to chase her down, but I was certain that was the wrong move at that time. Besides, Dawson had already noticed me staring off.” Earth to Reed? We need to report to my father immediately. Or did you forget about your Alpha? I mean I, the girl is pretty but she is just a slave girl.” I stifled a growl from Benne. “-Not now, it isn’t safe for us to go after her.-” “We could just challenge Dawson….” This wolf was crazy, even if I wanted nothing more than to challenge him, we couldn’t win. “-Where would that leave Melody if we were to die in a challenge to the future Alpha.” Benne huffed and disappeared. He couldn’t argue and the stubborn wolf must have known if we continued this conversation he would risk losing it. That was not something either of us could afford. We had to be smarter when dealing with the Jacksons. The whole family was slimy. 3 months ago, I had officially taken over the beta roll from my father. Normally, it would wait until Dawson had been made Alpha. They like to keep the generations together. I guessed, however, 5 months ago my father had been injured while out on a mission. From what I was told, he was attacked and dosed with wolfsbane and, after 2 months, it was clear he couldn’t continue his role as Beta as he was not going to heal completely. The doctor said that damage had been done to his leg in the fight but that the wolfsbane prevented his wolf from healing him quickly enough. This caused scar tissue to form in his leg and limited his mobility. He still helped the Alpha with some paperwork while I transitioned though. “So, are we meeting with the Alpha in his office?” I asked Dawson as we headed inside through the main Pack house doors. “Yeah, him, your father, and Delta John are waiting for us. They wanted to see if we found out any information about our training at the palace.” “I take it information on other Packs or the royal family, not a she-wolf named Sharon?” I mused. “NO, you will not discuss my…ahem… extra-curricular activities,” Dawson commanded, and I simply nodded back. I was happy to avoid any conversations about his personal life whenever possible. As we approached the door, my father stood off to the side, propped up on his cane. He had looked 10 years older since that day. “Welcome home son.” He gave me a soft pat on the back. I hadn’t realized how much I missed him being away and now I could really use his advice. As always, my dad seemed to read me like a book and knew I needed some parental advice. “Mom asked if you would come by for dinner tonight.” He said as I walked through the doorway. “Yeah, sure thing dad.” “Now that the reunion is over, sit down so we can discuss your training.” Alpha Jacob said, gesturing at the chairs in front of us. Today will be a long day and it isn’t even 8:30 yet.
