Reeds POV
“So, what did you both learn while at the castle?” Alpha Jacob asked, looking towards myself and Dawson.
“Reed will give his report and I’ll add on anything he has missed,” Dawson commanded.
“Of course this prick wants us to report first.. He wouldn’t know anything that had happened unless he was being asked about a small brunette omega… what a prick” Benne huffed again in my head. “-So did you come back just for that? He’s still our soon to be Alpha, yanno…-” I tried to reason but this wolf didn’t care. He was going to get us in a lot of trouble someday soon. He had never liked Dawson or even wanted to acknowledge him as an Alpha. Thankfully, we had yet to be asked something that he really disagreed with.
“Reed?” My father was the one to snap me out of it.
“Yes, so, as you know, we spent the last month completing training at the Castle.” I had to be careful what information I gave to them. My dad had told me to be mindful to provide enough detail to avoid suspicion, but not enough that would cause other innocent packs any issues. He didn’t trust Alpha Jacob. He had a lot of things he still needed to tell me and I made a note to ask him next time we were actually alone and away from prying ears.. Things didn’t add up. The number of packs that have been labeled traitors while in alliance with us, missing she wolves, and mysterious rogue attacks.
“Yes, the training I sent you and Dawson to. Now what information did you gather?” Alpha Jacobs' tone switched to one of annoyance as he slid behind the oak desk.
“So first off, the Queen kept herself away for most of the stay besides the weekly dinner with the Alphas. My understanding is she has been hiding herself away for the last 8 months since the rogue attack on the King's convoy which resulted in his death. Right Dawson?” He seemed to just barely be paying attention as his eyes glazed over as he mind linked someone. A knock was heard from the door and an omega named Sandra came in bringing refreshments. Ah. Now it made sense as to why he wasn’t paying attention now. This one was his favorite and she had even gotten it in her head that she might become the future Luna of the Black River pack. Alpha Jacob quickly waved her off after she set down the tray. She lingered momentarily by Dawson before Alpha Jacob shot his son an irritated look and she got the message to leave.
“Are you still messing with that Omega?” His father spat out.
“No, I broke up with her before I left, just as you said.” Dawson lied. Right after we left, he was already talking about making plans to hook up with her when he got back.
“Anyways. Dawson, can you tell me more about the Queen?”
“Yes, so what Reed said is correct. I only saw her during the Alpha dinners once a week. I overheard some of the Alphas talking about how she was already being asked by the Alpha council to consider taking a mate but she said she would not take a mate unless he was her second chance mate.” This was information Dawson had given me when he returned from the Alpha dinners. As a Beta, I didn’t join, which meant I got 2 hours free from Dawson once a week. “Disappointing really. The queen is beautiful. What Alpha wouldn’t want to mark her and give her pups. The kingdom doesn’t have an heir at all.” I could tell his mind was drifting elsewhere.
“Ah, interesting. What else did you learn?” Alpha Jacob seemed really interested by this information. A sinister smile played on his face.
“Well, during training, some of the Alphas were saying the council was making her tour the packs in 4 months to see if anyone was her second chance mate.” I picked up the conversation.
“Is that so? Maybe we should move up the warrior trials to 6 weeks from now, after the second full moon. It should give us time to prepare and then settle back in once the trials are completed.”
“I think that is a great idea.” Dawson looked genuinely excited over watching the future warriors brutalize some of the slaves. “Sick. You know we are one of a handful of packs that still keeps slaves? Disgusting. We need to make sure Mate doesn’t sign up.” “-s**t. I hadn’t even thought about that. She wouldn’t, would she? Not after her brother had challenged the Alpha…-” My mind was racing. “We need to get out of here and talk to mate.” “-We can’t just leave Benne-” “But mate!” Benne whined in my head. It is not that I didn’t agree with him, but we couldn’t leave. “-It isn’t for 6 weeks. No one can even sign up yet. Calm yourself.-” I said the last part to both of us. It wasn’t helping, I could already feel my chances with her dwindling. It felt hopeless, but all I wanted was her.
“Have they found any information on the convoy attack?” Dawson poked me in the side while his father was looking away to get my attention.
“Not really. They knew that it was a group of rogues in conjunction with 2 feral vamps. They think there must have been a magic user as well, but whoever it was didn’t leave any traces.”This seemed to satisfy the Alpha.
“Let's get to planning the Warrior trials. Sign ups will start tomorrow.” There it was. My heart felt as if it had dropped into my stomach. I had to get a moment to speak with her, but how?
The rest of the meeting consisted of planning the warrior trials and lasted over 2 hours. I picked at some of the refreshments a bit. I hadn’t eaten any breakfast, but the news made me sick to my stomach so that I didn’t really want to eat. It took everything in my being to not leave this room to go find her right now.
“Alright, we can reconvene tomorrow to continue making our preparations.” Alpha Jacob finally ended the meeting. “Dawson, since you will be taking over as Alpha soon. I need you to handle the punishment for one of the slaves who shirked off their duties while you were gone. You know Melody, right? “
“Yeah, of course I do, she is always causing trouble. She was late this morning too.” Dawson replied with a smirk. My mouth dropped. “Right Reed? We saw her outside when the truck had already gotten here.”
“I don’t think she was late, I think the truck was early. Isn’t it scheduled to arrive at 8? We got here right before 8 am so I don’t think she was late.” I couldn’t tell them she was my mate. I had to find a way to get her away from here first. While I had never seen the punishments first hand, I knew how sadistic these bastards were. They wouldn’t be simply assigning extra work duties.
“Still, she should know better than to keep them waiting.” Dawson rolled his eyes. “I’ll handle it after I get some real food in me. Reed, can you take her down to the cellar and wait for me?”
I simply nodded, trying to figure out any way to get her out of this. “Well you know what he likes. Maybe you can offer him a distraction.” Benne chimed in. “-Maybe that will work.-” I replied as I ran off to find Sandra.
