Within half an hour, the rush they’d been running on wore out. The adrenaline drop hit after that, with tremors that shook Lyle’s body to its very center and that inspired newly imagined endings to their previous fight that had Lyle’s mind racing between fury over what could have been and gratitude over what had been done. While the car ate up miles of South Dakota and the night deepened and darkened, they spoke very little. Lyle had to imagine that Rafe was playing his own mental games of “what if.”
