The Past

1320 Words
I knew of war and battles from a young age. My father was a very powerful and respected man. My father the first lycan was strong and was the ruler of our kind. I remember when I turned ten he began to train me not just in combat and how to handle a sword but he taught me to control the powers growing inside me. I hated training but I was proud to be my father's daughter and I knew everything that was passed down from him to me was a gift. As time went by I know most thought we were cursed. This life wasn't and isn't easy but it is who I am. My father had many followers and our clan only grew with every year that passed. I remember the night I met Nick. He was a young man, five years older than me. He was much better suited for this life then I was. My father was fond of him though. My father once told us we could learn a lot from each other if we just embrace it. Nick began to take over my training and he taught me to move quicker and deadlier. He taught me to not be afraid to kill and to do it swiftly and show no mercy. I spent most of my days with Nick. He never liked the attention I got from other Lycans and men from our village. On the days we didn't train I ventured off on my own but Nick always followed me. I know he was worried and need to protect me for my father's sake. One day, Nick followed me to my favorite spot in the village. It was a lake with an enormous waterfall. I loved bathing in the water and relaxing. I knew he had followed me all the way here but he always stayed hidden. I kind of appreciated his vigilance and dedication. This one time he came into the water. I felt his warm hands embrace me from behind. He always told me he loved the way I smelled. I was intoxicated by his scent as well. That was the first time we made love. He held me in his arms for hours. Everything felt perfect. My father seemed to accept our love easily. He actually encouraged it after some years after Nick's arrival. My father was growing older and had decided to choose an heir to take over as king of the Lycans. Naturally, my father chose me but I thought Nick was more suited to be king. I convinced my father that I would hand down my birthright to him. My father was hesitant but went with it for the time being. The first blood war began three years after I was named the lycan heir. Lycan's weren't territorial or possessive of anything. For centuries all we wanted was to control and learn to live with the monster we were. Once we got a handle on that are human nature caused us to become greedy and seek more power and strength. Lycan's went to war with each other. My father and Nick went to the front lines and fought for our clan and our way of life. My father believed that we could live in peace but he knew he had to protect his family. The war seemed never-ending. There was a raid at our home during the winter. My father and Nick weren't home. I tried to protect our clan but it was too much for just me. I felt useless and powerless. Nick was frightened as well. We bonded with each other that same winter. We vowed to be together and protect one another forever. The war grew more violent. The next month when all hope seemed lost Nick grew more powerful. I later found out he had made a pact with the moon gods. He wanted more power and swore to get it. He sacrificed forty wolves to the gods but they were angry at his greediness and lack of respect for them and his kind. They cursed him instead and he soon became a vampire hybrid. He lusted for blood and was truly a creature of the night now. He soon learned to control his urges and became more powerful than any lycan other than my father. He was gone for so many months I thought he was dead. When he came back he helped stop the war and united our kind. My father was grateful but he knew Nick had changed. He wanted to keep killing and make anyone who didn't listen to pay for their disloyalty. My father then pushed me even more to become the lycan heir and not let him rule our clan. I didn't want to believe that he had lost his way. I wanted to believe that my love could stop his madness. Nick soon started to create more of his kind and the vampire creature was born. They didn't have any lycan traits or shifting abilities. We didn't know what was becoming of the supernatural world but at the time it wasn't good. It was hard for these creatures to control themselves and with no one to teach them they were unbearable. Perhaps that is why hunters came into existence. My father felt his time coming and forged a dagger to hold his powers until I was ready to ascend his throne. I told no one of this dagger and kept it with me for years. My father and mother eventually died and I let Nick take over as lycan king. He was upset that he didn't have any of my father's powers but didn't think much of it. He never assumed I was hiding his powers in a dagger. Years went by and Nick's hunger for power grew and grew. He made sure everyone stayed in line and followed him. I thought it was still going to be okay but I was wrong. We tried to have children but I was always miscarried during the first month. Soon he brought me a child from a nearby village who had lost his parents. He was five and his name was Darien. I treated him like a son and Nick tried to love him like a son but when he grew older he looked at him as a threat. When he was twenty-two Nick turned him. I tried very hard to teach Darien how to control his blood lust and be a good man. I always looked at him like a son. Nick took a few lovers and even though he killed all of them after I still was hurt and betrayed. He tried to kill Darien numerous times. I was living a nightmare and I didn't know what to do. Soon the next blood war began between vampires and Lycans. Nick was at the center. Now thinking vampires were his family. I knew I had to defend my kind. This war was the bloodiest and it cost me almost every single lycan in my clan and in the world. I told Nick about the dagger knowing he would do everything in his power to retrieve it. I forged my own dagger with every sleeping potion I could find. I knew I couldn't kill the man I loved but I would stop him. Darien and I set up an assault with a small number of his coven and my clan and we attacked his followers. I remember it like it was yesterday. We defeated them with ease and took over his castle. He was in his room waiting for the end. I still find myself unable to stab him or attack him. I look him in the eyes and tell him to leave and never come back. To seek no more followers and live his life in peace. I let him go and then that cost me everything.
