Prologue
It had to end at one point.
“I choose Renee,”
What was usually a captivating voice suddenly became a poison dart to her heart. Months of build up to this? Being left on a doorstep in the pouring rain by her so called soulmate?
Of course it would end this way.
Renee was perfect. She had luscious blonde hair that flowed down to her waist, and the perfect vibrant blue eyes to match. There was no way Emery could compete with her. No, Emery’s curly black hair and violet eyes held less value. Moreover, Renee and Carl has been childhood friends- she wasn’t even in the same playing field as those two.
Taking one more long laboured look at Carl, she waited for the next stab of pain. This process had been dragged out too long and it was going to hurt in the long run. Emery knew she was the one who’d end up in more pain.
You see, Emery and Renee both share the same mate. What started off as a wonderful meeting during a vacation, ending terribly when Emery and Carl came home. Carl instantly felt the same connection with Renee. Rare, but not unheard of.
It was obvious from the start who he was going to choose. Why did Emery delude herself into thinking that Carl would pick her? So what they had a nice few months together with a genuine connection- that’s nothing compared to years of secret feelings.
So, as the rain water clouded up her glasses, Emery accepted her fate. She’d always remember the way his cheekbones seemed to curl when he laughed. Or how Carl squinted his eyes and big his tongue when he was really concentrating. His favourite song, book, film and even colour would always be significant to her.
As he opened his mouth to say the dreaded words, she still felt her heart skip at his voice. No matter what daggers he threw at her, Carl would never be a demon. In all fairness, he was paying her a favour- Emery could move on with her life now.
Even though only seconds were passing, Emery felt every minute of their glorious three months together in full force.
Their first date. Their first kiss. Their first time they saw each other.
When she first saw Carl’s wolf Romane she found herself feeling a new exciting kind of love. Her desire to touch his fur was unreal and she could barely contain herself. Though their sweet moment was soon interrupted by Renee transforming.
Renee’s wolf had gorgeous grey fur that shone even in the darkest depths of the night. Compared to Emery’s odd golden colour, her fur was way too light so she could barely blend in when hunting. No wonder her pack never let a flimsy omega like her go with them.
“Emery?” Carl asked, forcing her out of her trance.
Even now his voice was the dreamiest thing her ears had ever heard. How she longed to hear him call her name again- though now that reality was slipping further and further away.
She nodded slowly, precariously,” It has been a lovely few months Emmy. You know you hold a special part of my heart. But it is unfair to both you and Renee if I don’t make a decision. And well, like I said, I choose Renee”
“I understand Carl,” She said through a forced smile, slightly relishing in the contented look he had when Emery called his name,” I always thought it would end this way,”
With a deep breath, Carl stepped out of the doorframe- however despite the fact he was closer the distance between them increased,” I Carl Holiday, member of the pack Sunset Dawn, reject you, Emery Hue as my mate and fellow pack member. May you be on your way,”
Turning on her heels, Emery ran down the dark street. All of the terraced houses seemed dark and haunting. Despite the fact that, inside, there were warm fires by which couples sat- mated and happy. Some with children, some without. In that moment, to Emery, they seemed the biggest demons of all.
After she heard Carl slam the door, Emery suddenly felt the loneliest she ever had. Pain resided in her heart but she pushed it down, it was true she had accepted what was to come but in no way was she ready to face the emotions that came with it.
Why can’t we go back and fight? A little voice, Teifu, whispered desperately in her head. Emery didn’t even bother to answer- Teifu was suffering just as she was.
The only sound that now resided down the street was the faint click clack of her boots as she rushed away from it all. She hurried her legs down winding alleyways, past the nice rich homes to the poorer harsher neighborhood.
With little money and little time, Emery bought the cheapest and closest flat she could to Carl. Now it all seemed worthless.
Against her moldy steamed windows, Emery could hear the threatening crash of rain. Through the unsealed cracks in the walls, water seeped through. Towels were lined on the edges of the floors in a futile attempt to collect the leakage. But alas, the carpet was a wreck anyway.
In an attempt to get rid of the loneliness, she turned on the old TV. It was large, old and very broken. On good days it picked up the history channel. Still it would be better than the silence of her thoughts.
Luck really isn’t on her side today. All that was displayed on the tiny screen was the all too familiar black and white static show. No pictures just a painful beep as no reception could be found.
Groaning in frustration, she turned the TV off and slammed the remote on the floor.
Crash! Lightning thundered outside, giving Emery an awful fright. The pretty red dress she had on to impress Carl was ruined, as was the makeup she had so tenderly put on. All her mascara was running down her face; her lipstick was smudged across her cheek. Even her eye shadow had began to clump together.
From her original home, in a completely different country, Emery had bought an old laptop with her and some other personal items. Now that she had no mate in this strange pack, she could leave without a second thought.
Upon turning on the computer, a sudden thought hit her. Opening the window, she took a large intake of breath.
“I, Emery Hue- member of no pack what so ever, accept your rejection Carl Holiday,” Emery shouted out, knowing somehow he would feel her message,” May you and your mate have a happy life as I now will. No strings attached to this one!”
With that she slammed the window shut but unknowingly opened up many doors for her future.
