Chapter 1: Edge of the Abyss
Rain hit the windshield like bullets. Amelia's fingers white-knuckled the steering wheel, her breath fogging up the cracked glass. The cliff road ahead twisted sharply, flanked by nothing but jagged rocks and the endless black Atlantic. Behind her, engines roared. Her rearview mirror filled with headlights—three SUVs, glossy black and monstrous, slicing through the mist like predators closing in. Her old sedan fishtailed on a curve, tires screeching. “Come on, come on," she whispered, slamming her foot down. The engine coughed in protest. Then—silence. It died. “No," she breathed. “Not now!" A high beam flared. The SUVs boxed her in—one ahead, two behind. Doors slammed. She flung open hers and stumbled into the cold night, shoes slipping on wet gravel as she ran toward the cliff's edge. The sea below roared like a beast, waves crashing mercilessly against stone. “Amelia." The voice stopped her in her tracks. Slow. Deep. Familiar in a way that scraped old wounds raw. She turned. Damian Knight emerged from the lead SUV, rain painting his charcoal suit to his skin. He looked untouched by the weather, as if storms obeyed him. His hand lifted, palm open. “Come back." Her lips twisted into a hollow smile. “Back to what? Chains and locked doors?" He took a step forward. “That was protection." “That was a prison!" Wind howled around them, ripping her hair loose. Pebbles rolled beneath her heels. “Please," he said, softer now, eyes almost pleading. “You don't have to do this." She laughed—sharp, cracked. “Three years, Damian. Three years you kept me like a secret. A pet. You don't get to say 'please' now." “You ran." “You left," she shot back. “Don't forget who disappeared first." He moved again, slower this time, as if she were a frightened animal. “Amelia, I didn't know who I was—" “And once you remembered, you locked me away." “You don't understand the world I returned to. The threats—" “You were the threat!" she snapped. The headlights caught the faint scar around her ankle, a silver ring of skin. Her fingers curled instinctively. “Do you remember what you said the night you locked me up?" Her voice dropped to a whisper. “'You'll thank me one day.'" His jaw clenched. “And you're alive because of it." “You call this living?" she whispered. A gust slammed into her. One foot slipped on the edge. Loose gravel skittered into the abyss below. “Don't," Damian said, his voice cracking. She froze, arms out for balance, breath sharp in her chest. “I'm not here to hurt you," he said. “I've changed." “Men like you don't change. You just... redirect the damage." A pause. The wind roared. The sea beckoned. “I came back for you," he said. “You came to finish what you started." “That's not fair." She laughed again, rain slipping into her mouth like salt. “Nothing about this was ever fair." He took another step. “Stop," she warned. “Just let me talk to you." “No. Talking is what you do before you take things away." “I'm not leaving without you." Her hands trembled. “Then you'll be waiting a long time." “Look at me," he said, stepping closer. “Do you really think I haven't suffered?" “Suffering doesn't buy you redemption." “I've tried to fix everything—" “But you never gave me a choice!" she shouted. “That's all I ever wanted." Lightning split the sky, revealing the tortured lines on his face. He looked older. Sharper. Haunted. “Augus would've let me go," she whispered. He flinched. She took a step back. Nothing behind her now but air and roaring surf. “Amelia, please," he breathed. “Do you remember what I said? That if you ever wanted to repay me, you'd have to marry me?" She gave a hollow laugh. “Funny how the joke became the cage." His eyes flickered. “I didn't mean to hurt you." “But you did." “I'll change. I swear. I'll let you go wherever you want. No more cages." “Too late." The wind shrieked. Thunder rumbled like judgment. “I loved you," he said quietly. “No," she said. “You owned me. That's not love." Tears mixed with rain, but she didn't wipe them away. He reached out. “Just take my hand." She looked down—at the endless sea, at freedom wrapped in danger. “Goodbye, Damian." “No—!" She stepped back. The cliff crumbled beneath her heel. Her body tilted, weightless for a heartbeat, then fell like a bird without wings. His scream pierced the storm. But the ocean swallowed it whole.
