HER WORLD SHATTERS
I got married a few hours ago. You'd think that I was happy, but I wasn't. I got married to Dante Moretti, a man I greatly despised. Why? Because my grandfather had betrothed me to him immediately after I turned nineteen years old, because he said it was good for the two families to become one. I had pleaded with my grandfather to let me off the hook and explained that I was with another man, but my words fell on deaf ears. I turned twenty-three a week ago. My grandfather had ordered that we get married when I turned twenty-three. After realizing that my grandfather was not planning to change his mind, I broke up with my boyfriend Ethan a week ago. He didn't take it so well, and neither did I. I had drowned myself in alcohol. Oh…all this is not the only reason I despised Dante. When I had turned twenty-one two years ago, Ethan and I had planned to run off together and start a new life somewhere else. I didn't use any of my family’s planes or else grandfather would have found me instantly, so I ditched all my credit cards and phones so that I couldn't be tracked and Ethan booked a flight to France, but guess what? Dante found us. But how? Had he been following us? His car blocked us on the way to the airport, and he pulled me out of the car. Dante barely spoke to me, he simply dragged me into his car and drove me back home. Grandfather had grounded me for a month. That moment had ruined my plans of ever escaping. Dante Moretti ruined my chance at happiness. Which is strange, because he doesn't seem enthusiastic about the wedding. I could tell he wasn't as interested in me as I wasn't in him, so why didn't he just help me run off? He was obviously very close to my grandfather. They have got closer since his father died. Dante was an orphan, just like me. His father was really close to his grandfather, while his mother died when he was born. Dante's father had died four years ago while Dante was twenty-one. After that, my grandfather and Dante would visit grandfather at odd hours, and they would have private conversations about his studies. It seemed serious, but grandfather would laugh it off whenever I brought it up. Dante and I exchanged vows a few hours ago. It was the most we ever talked about since we have known each other. The ride home was quiet. As we walked into his mansion, he ordered his assistant to send me to my designated bedroom. At least I didn't have to share a room with him. I slid off the wedding dress and tossed it on the couch in the bedroom and slid into one of the red silk dresses I found in my closet. The dress stopped just above my knee. I had no bra on because it was a bralette. It was a little see-through, but at least I was alone. I slid into bed and covered myself up in a duvet. I had known this night was coming for years, that I would be married to Dante, but I still wasn't prepared. What was my role in his life? Would we be strangers forever? I sighed, did I have to break up with Ethan in the first place? I picked up my phone, it was 9:00 in the night. Grandfather must have been asleep by now. I would have loved to speak to him, for twenty-four years I had never spent a night away from the house. I fidgeted with my phone for a few seconds. Should I call him? Or not? I didn't want to wake him up, but ….what if he wasn't asleep? I immediately decided to dial his number. It rang once, twice, thrice, but there was no response. That was strange because grandfather would never miss a phone call from me. I called again, and a smile tugged on my lips as I heard grandfather's voice. “Hi, Cookie,” “Hi grandfather” He exhaled sharply, I could hear his breath shake. My brows pinched together, “Grandfather? Are you alright?” “Yes, Cookie, you looked beautiful up there in that aisle today.” Grandfather's voice was heavy as he spoke, “I love you baby girl.” I tilted my head to the side, “Gee, I just wanted to say hi Grandpa.” I chuckled. I heard footsteps from the other end of the phone. It seemed to be more than one person. “Grandpa, are you alone?” I asked, and the line suddenly beeped. I blinked. He hung up on me. Was there something wrong? I dialed his number again, it rang but no answer. I felt uneasy, Grandfather sounded sick. I quickly slipped out of bed, I needed to see him. I grabbed a black overcoat from the closet and slipped it on. I grabbed a pair of black shoes and immediately stepped out of the bedroom. As I was leaving the halls, I saw men all dressed in black suits standing back against the walls, they looked like they were guarding the place. Why would Dante have men stand here? As I strolled past them, they all nodded with respect and I nodded back. I hurried out of the mansion and jumped into my car. A few minutes later, I arrived home. I rushed into the house, “Grandfather?” I yelled as I rushed upstairs. “Ms. Caruso?” The house attendants were surprised to see me. I rushed into his bedroom, but it was empty. “Ma'am, I think we need to talk,” Marcus, one of my grandfather's personal attendants, tried to stop me, a serious expression on his face. I got goosebumps all over, something was wrong, I could feel it. I rushed past him, “Grandfather!” I shouted as I rushed to his study, my feet pounding against the wooden floor, as I pushed the door of his study open, my hands flung to my mouth at the sight before me. I froze. My hands were trembling. There were dead men on the ground, with familiar faces, a bullet through their heads. My grandfather sat on his chair, his head flung back, on his chest were several bullet wounds, blood splattered against his white shirt. My breathing grew heavy each second, “Grandad!” I let out a loud, agonizing scream. Marcus rushed to me and grabbed me, “Ms. Caruso, it's going to be alright.” “What happened?” I shouted! “Who did this!” Before Marcus could speak, I slipped away from his hands and rushed to my grandfather's side. I placed my shaky hands against his chest, his body was cold and lifeless. “Ms. Caruso, please….” “Who murdered him? Call the police!” I shouted. I quickly reached into my pocket and picked out my phone. I needed to call somebody. I scrolled through my contacts until I landed on Dante's. He gave me his phone number this morning. He knew my grandfather, maybe he was the right person to call. I clicked on his number and immediately heard a phone ring behind me. “Aurora,” I heard Dante's calm voice. I turned around to see him standing by the door with his phone in his hand, and he wore the most pitiful look on his face. When did he get here?
