Rise of the Eternal Flame (Chapter one, The Cracking Silence)
Chapter One: The Cracking Silence The mountain was breathing again. Deep beneath the Blackrock Range, where no birds flew and no wolves howled, a pulse stirred the earth’s forgotten heart. It was slow, thunderous, and ancient. As if the mountain had once been alive, died, and now, centuries later, was drawing breath once more. The stone cracked. Heat exploded through the cavern like a reborn sun, and light poured from veins of gold that snaked through the walls. Obsidian shattered with a scream of magic. Dust lifted. And within the swirling heat, a figure rose from a bed of molten crystal. She gasped as if drowning. Kaelith’s back arched, her eyes flying open, glowing gold before dimming into amber. Her chest heaved with panicked breaths. Fire dripped from her fingertips, vanishing before it touched the stone floor. She clutched her sides, disoriented, every muscle screaming in resistance to life after death. She didn’t know where she was. She barely knew who she was. The cave trembled again. The runes carved into the stone above her pulsed in response to her breath. Ancient markings, forgotten even by the oldest of witches, glowed faintly, recognizing her presence. Her head throbbed. Visions flooded in, wings spread wide beneath twin moons, a crown of flame, a war, a betrayal, and silence. Then nothing. Kaelith stumbled forward, catching herself on the jagged edge of what remained of her obsidian coffin. Her reflection into the polished surface stopped her. Her skin bore traces of golden scale that shimmered just beneath the surface. Her eyes, those were not human. Not anymore. “Where am I?” she whispered. Her voice was unfamiliar, like wind scraping across burning sand. She turned toward the mouth of the cave, drawn to a sliver of light where the mountain had split. Outside, the world waited. But it was not her world. As her bare feet touched the stone path, the mountain behind her sighed, then stilled, as if releasing her from its guardianship. She was no longer bound. She was reborn. Far below, the forests surrounding the Blackrock Range fell into uneasy silence. Creatures known to howl and hunt through the night now cowered in their dens. Even the wind had stopped. In a stone citadel carved into a cliff overlooking those very woods, Varek Durn, Alpha of the Iron-fang Lycan Court, stood on his balcony, bare-chested, breath clouding in the cool air. His long, dark hair was tied back, revealing the ancient scars that clawed across his shoulder. He felt it. Every part of him did.A tremor of heat. A ripple of power that had not existed for eons. “She’s waking,” he murmured. Behind him, Beta Alric stepped forward. “The earth moved. We felt it in the eastern barracks. At first, we thought it was an earthquake. ”Varek’s gold-flecked eyes narrowed. “No. Not the earth. Something beneath it. ”He inhaled deeply. The scent was faint but undeniable. Not wolf. Not vampire. Not witch. Something, older. “Send scouts to the Blackrock trail,” he ordered. “I want every shadow watched. If anything stirs, any creature, any flicker of magic, we move. ”Alric hesitated. “You think it's the prophecy? ”Varek turned to face him fully. “I know it is. ”Alric’s mouth parted slightly. “You don’t believe in the old words, my King. You’ve always said they were myths.” “I lied. ”Silence stretched between them. Varek walked back inside, reaching for the long cloak hanging near the fire. "Tell no one what you’ve heard. Not until, we’re sure. Not until I’ve seen it with my own eyes. ”Kaelith descended the path carved long ago by clawed feet and molten magic. She walked slowly at first, testing her limbs, her senses. Every tree she passed felt unfamiliar. The stars above looked different, no longer twins, but a scattered tapestry of lights she couldn’t name. The moon hung lower, rounder. The world had changed. She could hear the heartbeat of the forest. The fear in its creatures. The whisper of fire was still deep in her chest. But more than anything, she felt like she was being watched. Not by one being. By the land itself. As if the world were holding its breath at her return. Across the sea, in a blood lit temple buried beneath black ice, Seraphine, High Priestess of the Crimson Court, dropped the chalice she was holding. Blood splashed across her silks. Her disciples gasped, backing away from her trembling form. She clutched her chest as if stabbed, her sharp nails digging into flesh. “It cannot be,” she hissed.Acolyte Vanya moved toward her. “What is it, Priestess?”Seraphine turned toward the flame lit altar, eyes wide with ecstasy and horror. “She lives. ”Varek’s scouts returned the next morning with reports of smoke, ash, and heat where none should exist. “The mountain cracked,” one said, still shaking. “We found markings in the stone that glowed when we approached. And my lord, there were footprints. Bare. Glowing. ”Varek's pulse thundered. He dismissed the others and stood alone in his war chamber, staring at the ancient tapestry behind his throne. It depicted the severing when dragons were supposedly wiped from existence by the combined forces of Lycan, vampire, and witch. Their bones turned into stone. Their power sealed away. Their memory is forbidden. But not forgotten. He ran his hand down the edge of the embroidered flame and whispered, "Kaelith" He didn’t know how he remembered her name. Only that he did. Kaelith reached a cliff’s edge by dusk. Below her, the world stretched into valleys and rivers and distant cities pulsing with unnatural light. She dropped to her knees, overwhelmed. The silence inside her was gone. In its place, a roaring voice called her home. But she had no home. No people. No memory. She looked at her hands, shaking, alive, powerful. A faint ember danced between her fingers, flickering like a candle. “I am not human,” she said aloud. The wind responded. You are more than they ever were. Her eyes burned gold again, this time with purpose.
