Kat had woken up in a good mood taking a deep breath of the fresh country air she jumped out of bed ready to start the day.
After her bathroom routine, she wore a pair of old jeans and a t-shirt from when she was still staying with her mother. Everything could still fit even though it had been years. After a quick check on the mirror and shoving on her shoes, she skipped downstairs.
“Good morning” she sang to Sam who was at the table eating and to Harriet who was dishing a plate of eggs and bacon.
“Morning darlin’ how did you sleep?" Sam spoke first.
“Morning to you too love” Harriet replied. "Here is breakfast," she said as she handed the plate she had been dishing to Kat.
“I slept amazing,” Kat chirped. “Thank you Harriet," then she sat down to eat.
"You are in a chirpy mood this morning," Sam said to her.
"I had a good night's sleep without cars honking or people making noise outside. I woke up to birds singing outside my window and fresh clean air. I feel amazing," Kat told him with a bright smile.
"We are happy for you honey," Harriet said patting Kat's hand as she also sat down.
“So what’s there to do today?” kat asked them both.
“I’m going grocery shopping in town,” Harriet informed her. "You can join me if you like."
“And I’m going to check on the horses and clean the barn,”Sam replied.
Kat's face lit up. “There are horses here? I love horses. Can I come with you. Please! Please! Oh please!” she begged.
Both Harriet and Sam chuckled at her excitement. “Sure go get your boots and I will get you a Stetson it is hot outside,” Sam replied.
Kat jumped up and sped to her room not wanting to be left. She heard the couple chuckle in her wake.
When she entered the barn Kat was drawn to a white mare that was in the last stall.
“That's Mercury, she is strong but very stubborn. She was your grandpa’s prized horse, loved it to the bone. I think it's cause they had the same temperament.” Sam said as he offered an apple to her.
Kat took the apple raised it in her palm for Mercury to eat. The horse snorted its head in pride and eyed Kat. She sniffed around the apple before leaning forward and taking the apple.
Kat smiled and took that as an invitation to touch the horse. She reached out and ran her hand along its neck then scratched its ear. Mercury moved forward and leaned more into Kat’s hand and touched her cheek with its nose.
“Well, I’ll be darned that horse bites anyone who tried to touch her except your grandpa. Justin almost lost his hand to her it was darn hilarious,”Sam said with a smile.
“She’s beautiful, “ Kat said quietly as she kept on gently petting the horse.
“Yeah, she is a mighty fine horse. Why don’t you go for a ride while I work in here.”He offered? " That is of you can handle her."
“Really!” Kat exclaimed with a face-splitting smile. "Do not worry, I can handle her just fine." Sam couldn’t help smiling back at her. Kat reminded him so much of his friend Christopher.
“Sure now go, go ,go I have worked to do.”
“Thank you, thank you and thank you," she jumped up and down then kissed Sam's cheek.
Kat quickly saddled the mare and led Mercury out in minutes. The excitement of riding after so many years pumping through her. As soon as she was out side the barn she got on the horse and pushed it to a slow trot.
She had been riding for a few minutes when she heard a noise and she went to investigate. When she saw what the ruckus was about she pushed Mercury into a full gallop towards the fence where the bull was headed. Kat hopes that the bull, seeing her approaching would change direction and stop it from getting hurt from the fence.
Her plan worked like a charm.
When the trouble was averted she stopped at the fence took off her Stetson and looked to the two approaching riders.
“You!”She let out a gasp, eyes widening when she recognized the handsome rude man from the previous day.
Next to him was another man who looked between them with amusement and due to their similarities, they were probably brothers.
Seeing the stare down between his brother and the lady Joseph decided to speak up first.
“Hey there thank you for the help just now. I am Joseph Blackstone but you can call me Joey. I’m this one here’s younger and more handsome brother.”
Kat turned to the younger man and gave him a smile. " It's nice to meet you , Joey I’m Katherine Mason but you can call me Kat. “
There was a snort beside them and they turned their attention to the man with them.
“Oh, this one here is Dean. Don’t mind him he woke up at the wrong side of the bed today.” Joseph said earning a glare from his brother.
“Oh we met before,” Kat said with a frown.
“You did? How come you didn’t tell me ?” Joseph asked Dean.
“Cause it was none of your business, “ Dean grumbled.
“Hey ,what’s with the mood. You making us look bad in front of the lady. Be nice!.”Joseph scolded.
“Lady my foot.” Again Dean grumbled.
“She is a nice lady” Joseph countered.
“Not to him though. I dress like an i***t, I’m pompous and I look like I have a stick up my butt. Isn’t that right Mr. Blackstone?” Kat mocked.
“He said that to you? Huh, I’m so gonna tell mom. How could you be so rude Dean Blackstone," Joseph scolded.
“Momma’s boy,” Dean said while covering with a cough.
“ It was nice meeting you, Joey, and Mr. Blackstone. See you around.”Kat said smiling at the men then turned Mercury and galloped the way she came.
The brothers stayed rooted watching he ride away both fascinated but for different reasons.
“Man she is hot” Joseph let out a wolf whistle once he knew she was too far to hear. Dean just grunted in response but inside he agreed fully.
Katherine Mason was too damn hot.
