Chapter five

949 Words
Dean Blackstone was in a bad mood. No scratch that he was in a foul mood. It seemed like today was just not his day. First, the call from his company's manager that forced him to run to the city early in the morning to handle the problem at one of his restaurants. The problem was so minor, it pissed him off that he had driven all the way. Especially since he had to drive, his brother, Joseph's crumbling rust bucket. It was a miracle he drove to the city with the truck still in one piece. On his way back his brother Joseph's old truck decided to die on him in the middle of the road. Calling the rust bucket a truck is an insult to carmakers around the world but he had no choice as Joseph stole his truck. He parked the truck on the side of the road and slid under to try find what was wrong and fix it. It was either that or walking home. There were only two farms from where he was. He doubted anyone would drive by and give him a lift. When he heard that lady's voice it disturbed his concentration and he tried ignoring her thinking she might leave. He was in no mood to be neighborly and wished she could take a hint and leave. His wish went unanswered, she didn't leave forcing him to get out from under the truck only to be met with six-inch heels. Still disoriented from being under the truck he took time to lift his head. The long shapely legs, the tight pencil skirt that fell at her knees, the white blouse that molded her perfect figure, and finally her grey eyes and black hair. She was gorgeous. Her hair was pulled into a tight bun very prim and proper. She -definitely did not belong anywhere near his small town. His eyes zeroed in on her feet clad in high heels and he thought what kind of i***t wears those death traps and a suit in the country. Her outraged gasp showed him he has spoken out loud. Oops!. He didn't care to apologize because he greatly disliked city people especially the girls. They were spoiled pompous brats and he didn't hesitate to show his dislike to her. After taunting her for a bit he let her go but couldn't stop himself from staring and admiring her behind as she stomped away. The last thing he expected when he got home was hearing that Miss pompous was moving into town. And worse she was moving right next door to them. "What do you mean she's moving here?" Dean asked his brother and aunt Stacey who had met the girl at the diner. It was dinner time when he finally managed to get home. He found his whole family already sitting at the table ready to eat. He had quickly freshened up and joined them. "She's old man Mason's granddaughter she moved into his farm," Stacey replied as she sipped on her glass of water. "Why would she move here? There is nothing for people like her this side.I bet she's here to cause trouble like most city girls and especially like her stuck-up sister. " Dean muttered. "She didn't seem like those types of people. " Stacey interjected. "Don't you think you are being a little too quick and harsh in judging her. Christopher had nice things to say about her always," his mother Connie spoke up. Dean's parent Connie and Darren Blackstone had been friends with Christopher Mason for as long as he could remember. They had each other over for dinners occasionally and that's how Dean had met the Mason grandkids. "Christopher had nice things to say about his other grandchildren. The old man always tried to see the good even of there was not a lick of it there. There was no good in those city slickers he called grandchildren," Dean said bitterly. "I have met Kat, she is a quiet little thing. Super shy and as sweet as pie too," Stacey informed him. "That's just an act. They all alike trust me," he said as he got up, he had suddenly lost his appetite. He stomped upstairs to his room, and banged the door closed. His parents looked at each other and said nothing. Darren reached out and gave his wife's hand a comforting squeeze. Connie smiled at him assuring him that she was fine. Joseph just stared after his brother, he understood Dean's feelings towards this matter they all did. They were all there when it happened and they witnessed how it changed Dean's character. Gone was the happy down to earth guy he grew up with now he was a hardcore businessman to everyone except for family. Their parents gave up a long time ago to bring back the old Dean and just adjusted to the new one. Joseph prayed that one day his brother will come back to them and hopefully he will. "So Stacey, any luck finding a replacement for Mildred or a new recipe to try like you have been saying?" Connie asked breaking the silence left in Dean's wake. "No luck at all on either two. I am now thinking of taking Joey up on his offer to cook. But when I think of how he could possibly wipe out the whole of Lambertville with food poisoning I hesitate," Stacey replied teasing her nephew at the end. "Hey, I am not that bad," Joseph protested. "No offense Joseph but I would not even give the cattle the food you make," Darren joked making everyone burst out laughing, slightly easing the tension away.
