Kat took in a deep breath before using the key the lawyer had given her to open the door. She let herself into the passage way and closed the door as she looked around. Cream walls , high ceilings and wooden floors. She walked forward until she got to what looked like the lounge area. It had brown couches , antique furniture and a cream and brown rug infront of the fireplace. But what caught her attention was the pictures on the wall. The people were all strangers but she could trace a boy and a girl, twins if she could guess right. The pictures documented from their childhood on what seemed to be this farm. When she saw the pictures of another girl she stood stoke still. It was her. In one she was about five years old, then seven. after it was her tenth birthday, Kat remembered because her mother had bought her a new outfit which she had gone horse ridding in. Her mother had been spitting mad when she saw the dirty and torn brand new top. Tiny the horse had spoked and thrown her off. "You have your grandfather's eyes," a female voice spoke out scaring her. Kat whirled around and saw a middle aged round woman. She had brown hair and the kindest brown eyes Kat had ever seen. She looked to be about five foot five with a nice plumb figure. "Oh my gosh, you scared me," Kat told her. "I am so sorry honey, Im Harriet. I was your grandpa's friend and stay in house keeper, its nice to finally meet you." The woman Harriet spoke as she approached Kat. "Nice to meet you too. I am sorry i was so lost in the pictures i did not hear you approach." Kat explained. "I am so light on my feet,- my husband says i must have been a cat in my past life," Harriet joked making Kat smile. "Look at me rumbling on when you must be bone tired from you journey here. Why don't I show you your room so you can freshen up or take a nap if you like." Harriet suggested with a friendly and warm smile. "A shower and nap sounds heavenly right now. Let me just get my bags from my car first." "Sam will do that for you, just give me the keys and I will make sure your luggage is in your room in a jiffy." "Are you sure? I dont mind getting them." "Not at all honey, it will give that old coot something else to do other than muck around the stalls and come in smelling like manure." Harriet said as she opened the last door in the hallway. Kat walked in and her jaw dropped in shock. The room was everything she could have wanted in a room. It was like she had walked into her dream room. A queen sized bed that had purple and grey covers was in the room. The dresser and small desk that stood in the corner next to the window were made of dark brown oak. Next to the window was a purple chaise with a grey throw and next to it was a medium sized book shelf. "Is this my room?" "Yes, your grandpa had the master bedroom redecorated for you.He did say that if you wanted to change anything,- you were free to do so.-" "Its perfect. Its like he knew mw all my life. How did he--?" "When he found out about you,- he researched all he could about you. He had found out how the passing of your mother had affected you that he did not want you to have to go through the same.- He did not want you getting attached to him when he was already sick .-I think it was more for him than you,-- he was afraid to get close to you when there was no hope for him anymore." Kat felt tears welling up and clogging her throat, the loss of a man she never knew but who had done so much for her gripping her. "He sounds like he was a great man." "The best i have ever met , next to my husband though. Christopher did not look at race, background or past.He would help you even if he did not know two licks about you." "He made my dream come true even though he never met me." "I can never forget the excitement and joy he had when he found about you. We all thought you would be the push he needed to fight the cancer, but i guess it was his time to go. All he wanted was to make sure you would be taken care of after he was gone. The room was the last instructed, a week after , he slipped away in his sleep." "Now ,honey, why dont you take a shower and a small nap. By the the time you wake up dinner will be ready and you can meet everyone else." "A shower is really needed, thank you Harriet." "Welcome to Lambertville Katherine." Kat gave the older lady a smile as she slipped out of the door of her new bedroom. She traced a finger on the picture frame with her picture and gave a watery smile to the nine year old Kat. How Christopher had gotten her childhood pictures was a mistery. Kat did not even remember most of them, they were faded memories in her head. All this left her curious of the grandfather she had never met.
