Coming of Age
When a werewolf turns 18, they earn 3 things: their wolf spirit, their rank and most importantly their mate. My name is Quiana Stone and in two days will be my 18th birthday. The only problem is I was not raised in a pack like most wolves. Raised by trusted humans my mother left me with when I was merely 6 years old, I never learned the true ways of being a wolf. I didn’t know my original pack, or why my mother took me away in the first place. All I knew one day she told me to be a good girl and she would take me for ice cream later. She left that day, and I haven’t seen her since. But today was the day I would find my pack. After 5 years of research and the help of my adopted parents, Megan and Cole Ballard, I found my mom belonged to the Stone Moon Lake pack of St Landry Parish just outside of Lafayette, Louisiana. My father’s side, well I have yet to uncover his whereabouts, but I am anxious to hear what happened. Why did she leave me with humans? Where is she now? Who is my father? And Will my family ever be reunited? Those were the questions that floated tirelessly in my head.
I am now a barista in a small coffee shop in New Orleans that is owned by Megan. She knows my plans for my 18th birthday and even though she is excited for me to find out about my family, the worry has been on her mind since I told her. On one hand she wants to go with me so that I wouldn’t be alone. On the other hand knowing the werewolf world is more dangerous than the human world she cant help but wonder how all of this will play out since I have never been around the werewolf culture. I was brand new to this and just as nervous as she was. But nevertheless, like a mom, Megan was always by my side.
“Good Morning Qui Qui, sorry I’m getting in so late. Got held up in line at the bank.” Megan walked in with the cash bag filled with coins. “Here’s the change for the registers Qui.” She handed me the bag to fill up with registers. “Thanks! Yesterday we nearly ran out of coins so I had to round up.” I said to her. She didn’t respond, she just looked at me with concern written all over her face. “I’m going with you!” Megan blurted out. “What? No! are you crazy? You’re human! It’s more dangerous for you out there than it is for me!”
“Listen! I’m not letting you get yourself hurt by these wolves! I have known your mom for a very long time. She used to tell me about the things that went on in her pack. You weren’t raised around this, so you shouldn’t go by yourself!”
“Aunt Meg, you’re not going with me!”
“Oh we will see about that! I will tell Cole over dinner tonight. So when are we leaving?” She said with a smile!
It was no telling her “NO!” anymore. Megan was determined to go. At this moment I just had to roll my eyes and walk away. This is going to be a long dinner conversation, I thought to myself. The day went by slow as I dread the upcoming awkward family dinner later tonight. Luna Goddess, help me!
