Jax’s POV
Once again, I was stuck watching whoever this girl in the silver dress was walk away from me. I still enjoyed the view from behind as much as I did from the front. She turned down a hall on the right side which cut her out of my view. Damn. I was already missing looking at her, knowing she was close.
I was still watching where she had turned when my beta, Luke, and omega, Ben stopped a few feet behind me. I reluctantly turned my eyes away from the spot I was watching to see what they wanted.
“They’re calling dinner,” Luke stated with his hands in his dress pants. Ben just stood behind him, his eyes following each person who walked past us. He was anxious being outside the territory, unsure of who or what enemies we may have made from keeping to ourselves for so long.
“Yeah, I know. I’ll head inside in a minute,” I turned my head back to that hallway she had gone down. I wanted to intercept her when she came back outside to sit with the other omegas and figure out her name. Maybe even get her to agree to find me tonight after the pack leader’s daughter had her first shift. Just then, she came back into view, but she was headed further into the house. Before I could even consider catching up to her, another guy fell into step with her. A low growl came out of my chest without me realizing how incredibly annoyed I was with this fool who just prevented my plan to catch her in the hall.
Why was I already feeling possessive of this girl I had only had one conversation with? My good mood was quickly souring as I saw them laughing with each other. What were they even talking about? Before I even realized it, I had engaged my wolf hearing so I could hear their conversation.
“Any other experiences I should be looking forward to?” She was using a far too seductive voice for my liking. Just then this d**k bent down to her ear and whispered, “Well, I hear when you find your mate as an alpha, it’s quite an enjoyable experience as well.”
What. The. f**k. This guy better back the f**k off before I lost my temper. I couldn’t hear anything through my anger as I followed them down the hall. Then to top it off, she winks at him just as they part ways in the dining room.
I was seething, nearly seeing red. Luke grabbed my arm.
“Dude you gotta calm down. You can’t walk into a room full of alphas this mad, you’ll put the whole room on edge or make them cower under the table.”
I closed my eyes. He was right. I took three deep breaths from my nose and regained my composure…for the most part. My anger was under control, but my good mood had completely gone out the window.
Ben voice broke my concentration and I opened my eyes. “We all know it would’ve sent them under the table but that’s not your reason for coming here. Stay focused, alpha.”
He was right. I turned back towards the entrance of the dining room and cracked my neck each way before making my way to the opening. As soon as I crossed the threshold into the room, every person went quiet.
My eyes scanned each person in the room. To my surprise the girl from earlier was seated next to the Lunar pack’s alpha. So, this whole thing is for her. Makes sense why she seemed annoyed when I didn’t know her name. My eyes fell on the Lunar alpha, Dylan. I noticed that the girl finally turned her head and looked at me. The look of shock on her face was a bit gratifying. I didn’t hold pack any of the alpha in me when I commanded them, “Stand.”
Everyone stood in an instant. I slowly moved around the table, making eye contact with anyone who dared to look up at me. I could feel Luke and Ben trailing behind me, each stopping at their respective seat. I finally arrived at the open seat by the alphas.
I let my alpha tone carry, “It’s alright gentlemen, you can sit now.” They sat as the men looked at me confused.
“Jax? Did Neil…?” Dylan started to ask.
“He’s alive and well. But he stepped down about two years ago. I’ve been the Timber pack’s alpha since,” I curtly explained. That was all the information they would be receiving tonight on that specific topic. My eyes looked down at the bewildered eyes staring up at me.
“You’re…you…you mean to say you’re…” She couldn’t form her sentence.
“Are you going to tell me your name now?” I say it slightly smugly knowing I hold the power again. Her quick response of “no” as she turned her body away from mine shocked me. This girl just found out I have the most dominance in the room and yet she still thinks she can have the upper hand. Not only that, but her slight turn away from me stung. I wanted her to talk to me.
“Addison! That is no way to talk to an alpha!” Her mother was now scolding her and it made me smirk. That will bring down her ego and I just found out her name. Addison was staring daggers at her mother as she turned to face me again. “Sorry, alpha,” her tone dripped in annoyance.
“I accept your apology, Addison,” I said in exaggerated cheerfulness. She scowled at me in return which just made me smirk more. I then turned away from her, partially as a power move that I was limiting the conversation this time but also because the alpha sitting next to me happened to be a good friend.
I reached my hand out to Jameson, “Hey man, it’s been too long.” He grabbed hold of my hand and gave me a bro hug.
“Well, it wouldn’t have been so long if you’d stop hiding.” He joked with me. Our packs visited each other often but kept it very low key in order to avoid the political bullshit the older alphas would’ve tried to spin it as. There have been plenty of nights we would serve as a wing man for one another when we needed a break and wanted to get our d**ks wet. I considered Jameson one of my best friends and strongest allies.
We talked for another few minutes and I could feel Addison’s impatience radiating off of her. Good. I slowly turned back around to face her but just as my body faced her, I moved my eyes to her father and then began talking to him about pack things. Addison huffed under her breath and then crossed her arms as she leaned back in her seat. Our conversation was of nothing that was actually interesting or of importance, just the usual bullshit. But I liked the reactions I was getting out of Addison until she stood up and walked away. f**k.
