CHAPTER 1 - MY 18TH BIRTHDAY AS A SERVANT
CHAPTER 1 - MY 18TH BIRTHDAY AS A SERVANT
No one remembered it was my birthday.
Not that I expected them to.
I was balancing a silver tray of champagne flutes above the crowd in the Alpha house. My arms ached. My cheap black servant dress was too big and my feet hurt from running since 5 AM.
Today I turned 18. In our pack, that meant you found your mate. That meant freedom.
For everyone except the wolfless servant girl.
"Elara! Faster!" Mrs. Hana, the head maid, hissed at me. "The Alphas are coming down."
My heart dropped.
The Triplet Alphas.
Kael, Jax, and Cole.
They owned this pack. They owned this house. And for as long as I could remember, they owned my worst nightmares.
They hated me. I never knew why. Since I was 8 years old, they made sure my life was hell. Extra chores. Cold food. Laughing when I fell.
I tried to disappear into the kitchen wall as I heard them.
First Kael. Always first. Cold eyes, jaw sharp, looking like a king even in a simple shirt. He didn't even glance at me.
Then Jax, smirking, his eyes finding me just to make me flinch.
Then Cole, quiet, his eyes staying on me a second too long.
The party was for them. A welcome back party after their Alpha training in the North. All the pack girls were dressed in beautiful gowns, hoping to be chosen.
I was holding their drinks.
I was turning to leave when it happened.
Heat.
Sudden, burning, impossible heat started in my chest and shot down my spine. My knees went weak. The tray shook.
I gasped and a little water spilled onto the marble floor.
The smell hit me first. Forest. Storm. Smoke. Three scents tangled together.
Mate.
No. No, no, no.
I looked up.
All three of them had frozen. Their heads snapped toward me at the exact same second.
Kael's nostrils flared. His gold eyes went wide, then furious.
Jax dropped his glass. It shattered.
Cole took a step forward, his hand over his chest like he was in pain.
The entire ballroom was watching.
The head maid whispered, "Elara, what did you do?"
Kael was in front of me before I could answer. He grabbed my tray and slammed it onto a table, champagne spilling everywhere.
He leaned down, his voice so low only I could hear, full of disgust.
"Say it's not you."
My eyes filled with tears. I could smell him too now. He was my mate. All three of them were.
"Please—" I whispered.
He grabbed my wrist, hard, not gentle. His touch burned my skin. He hated touching me.
"Say it's not you, wolfless thing!"
Jax came next. He didn't grab me. He laughed, but it was an angry laugh. "The Moon Goddess is joking. Us? Mated to the servant? To her?"
Cole didn't speak. He just stared at my neck, where my mating mark should be. His breathing was heavy.
Kael let go of my wrist like I burned him. He looked at the whole pack and shouted,
"She is no one! This changes nothing! We do NOT have a mate!"
My 18th birthday. My mate day.
And they denied me in front of everyone.
I stood there, shaking, with spilled champagne on my feet, while the three boys who hated me all my life were now stuck with me by fate.
And fate was cruel.
