CHAPTER 7 - FIRST TRAINING
I did not sleep.
Cole said he would teach me. Train with us.
I had never trained in my life. Servant girls don't fight. Wolfless girls definitely don't fight.
At 5 AM, there was a knock. Three knocks. Their knock.
I opened the door wearing the black hoodie and leggings Mrs. Hana gave me. They were too big.
Kael, Jax, and Cole stood there in training clothes. They looked... awake. Like they had been arguing about this for hours.
"You came," Cole said.
"You ordered me to," I whispered.
Kael looked me up and down. "You can't train in that. You will trip."
He threw a folded set of clothes at me. Small. Black. Actual training clothes. Girl's training clothes.
"Seraphina left those last year," Jax said quickly. Too quickly.
I went inside to change. When I came out, all three stared for one second too long, then looked away.
The training field was empty at 5 AM. Foggy, cold. Only us.
"First rule," Kael said, becoming the Alpha teacher. "If someone grabs you, you don't freeze."
"I always freeze," I admitted.
"Not anymore," Cole said. He stepped in front of me. "I will grab your wrist. Slowly. You pull back and hit my chest. Okay?"
I nodded.
He reached for my wrist slowly. His hand was warm. The moment he touched me, that mate spark shot up my arm again. I gasped, not from pain, but from surprise.
Cole felt it too. His eyes flashed.
"Again," Kael ordered from the side, his jaw tight. He was watching Cole's hand on my wrist and he did not like it.
Cole tried again. This time I pulled back and tapped his chest weakly.
"Harder," Jax scoffed from behind. "You hit like a child."
"I am trying!" I said, frustrated.
"Then try properly," Jax said. He walked over. "Move, Cole. You are being too soft on her."
Cole stepped back. Jax took his place.
He didn't ask. He grabbed my wrist firmly.
The spark was stronger with Jax. Angrier. Hotter.
"Now hit me," he said, close to my face.
"I don't want to hurt you—"
He laughed. "You can't hurt me."
That made me angry. I yanked my wrist hard and pushed his chest with all my strength.
He wasn't expecting it. He was standing on wet grass.
He slipped. And because he was still holding my wrist, he pulled me down with him.
We fell. Hard.
I landed right on top of him, in the damp grass, my hands on his chest, our faces inches apart.
Total silence.
I could feel his heart pounding under my palms. Fast. Too fast. His eyes were wide, gold, locked on mine. His scent — cedar and smoke — filled my nose.
For three seconds, neither of us moved.
"Elara!"
Kael's voice cut like ice.
I scrambled off Jax instantly, my face burning red.
Jax sat up, swearing, wiping grass from his arms. His ears were red.
Cole turned away, but I saw his shoulders shaking. He was trying not to laugh.
Kael walked over. He looked furious. But not at me falling. At... the way Jax had looked at me.
"That's enough training for today," he said coldly. "You both need discipline."
He grabbed Jax by the back of his shirt and pulled him up.
"And you," he said to me, his voice lower. "You are not allowed to tackle an Alpha. Ever."
"It was an accident!"
"Accidents like that get you marked," he muttered, so low only I could hear.
Marked?
Before I could ask, he walked away toward the pack house, leaving me and Cole and Jax in the grass.
Jax stood up, not looking at me. "Tomorrow, 5 AM again."
And he walked after Kael.
Cole stayed. He offered me his hand to help me up.
"Did I really do that bad?" I asked, embarrassed.
Cole smiled. First real smile I had ever seen from him.
"No," he said. "You did perfect. You knocked down the meanest Alpha in the pack. No one has ever done that."
He pulled me up. Our hands stayed linked a second too long.
From far away, I saw Kael watching us from the balcony of the Alpha wing.
Watching Cole hold my hand.
And he did not look happy at all.
