Maddox POV
What the f**k am I doing? I think to myself as I walk in on my mate standing in a towel in the middle of the bathroom. Everyone else is still outside but I knew the minute she left, it had driven my Lycan Leo crazy. I’m surprised that he didn’t take over when he first recognized her as my mate. But we seem to be thinking along the same lines, that it would be impossible to have her by our side. At the same time though, he wants her and I have to admit part of me does too. She’s stunning, with shoulder length light brown hair, light brown eyes, a heart-shaped face, with lips made for sinning. But she’s small, quite small even for an Omega. Actually, she looks like she could stand to gain a few pounds. I know her Alpha Darren isn’t cruel to his Omegas like other packs are so why does she look so thin?
“C-can I help you with something?” My mate asked me, then tacked on a sir when I raised one of my eyebrows to her.
“Don’t act stupid,” I growled at her.
“Excuse me,” she said, sounding taken a back.
“You heard what I said, you know we’re mates,” I hissed out that last word like it was a curse, and it was. I must be cursed because what are the chances I find my mate and she’s a f*****g Omega?
“I do, of course I do, but you didn’t really seem like you wanted to acknowledge that.”
“Are you a mind-reader?”
“What?”
“A mind-reader, do you have special psychic abilities?”
“Um, no,” she told me, sounding confused.
“Then why would you presume to tell me what I do and do not wish to acknowledge?”
“I-I just meant th-that you seemed like you didn’t want anything to do with me at the party. You didn’t even speak to me.”
“And why should I have spoken with you? You’re a f*****g Omega, an Omega, why would speaking to you be worthy of my time.”
“I may be an Omega, but the Moon Goddess clearly thought I was worthy of your time, or she wouldn’t have made me your mate,” I almost smirked. So far during our exchange she had barely looked at me, stuttered a bit, and kept getting all red in the face. I must admit I wasn’t expecting this type of fire from my Omega mate. She may have been my mate, and that sass may have given me the beginning of a massive hard-on but she was still an Omega, and I was going to be her King. She couldn’t speak to me like that.
“You know,” I said to her stepping closer so that I could twirl a strand of her wet hair around my fingers. “The punishment for insubordination to your King is hefty.”
“And the punishment for being insubordinate to your mate?” She asked me, I may have misjudged her.
“The Moon Goddess may have tried to make us fated mates, but even she has been known to make mistakes. There are mate pairs that can’t stand each other, that cheat on each other, that kill each other. Clearly judging by the fact that she thought she could mate a King to an Omega, she isn’t playing with a full deck. She may have given you to me as a mate but that doesn’t mean I have to accept it. I certainly wouldn’t be the first person to reject my mate.” She paled when I said that, and I got it. The mate bond was supposed to be sacred. Everything I said about mates was true, even if those cases were considered rare. The mate bond bound our human and wolf selves, and some even believed it intertwined our souls. Because of this, rejection was an extremely emotional, taxing, and painful experience. Especially for weaker wolves. If she had been mated to another Omega, rejection wouldn’t have been as bad, but to be bound to a Lycan meant that she would suffer greatly.
“I’m your mate,” she said in disbelief, then she got this strange look on her face before continuing, “you know it didn’t really click until I saw you tonight. Of course all anyone has been talking about lately is the arrival of the Lycan King, so I’ve heard that nonstop for weeks now. But I still hadn’t put it together. We met once before you know,” he didn’t know that, he had no memory of this Omega, “it was almost six years ago. You were here with your father, I’m not sure for what, but you were here. As soon as I saw you, I thought you were the most beautiful man I had ever seen. I was immediately taken with you, and I couldn’t understand having a crush of that magnitude on a stranger. Even one that was destined to become the King. But now I understand why, it’s because you were going to be my mate. But it’s just my luck you’re an arrogant, rude, cruel man.”
I snarled at her and moved my hand to wrap it around her throat, not hard enough to hurt her, but hard enough to let her know I was the one in charge. “Listen to me carefully Omega,” I sneered at her, “I am your superior in every way. I don’t know what the Moon Goddess was thinking when she decided to make you my mate, but I will not stand for your disrespect. And as for the fact that you are my fated mate, you will never sit on the throne by my side, I can guarantee that. But,” I said pausing to look up and down her body, “if you gain a little weight you might just be good enough to warm my bed.” I told her before I dropped her to the floor and walked out of the bathroom. I was so f****d, I had no idea what I was going to do about this. Before I turned to leave though I had one more thing to say, “I’ll think I’ll be extending my stay Omega, I’ll be seeing you in the morning.”
Lucy POV
I picked myself up off the floor and on shaky legs made my way to my room. I shouldn’t have talked back to him, I should have just let him say what he wanted to say then he might have just left me alone. But now I think I’ve pissed off the new King, how do I even make-up for that. I tossed and turned in my bed for what felt like hours before I decided that I would get up early and make him an apology breakfast. Food was my love language and my mom always thought that it could make anything better. Here’s to hoping she was right. I finally fell asleep, even if there were only a couple hours before I’d have to get up again.
I got to sleep in a little longer than I normally would have since I decided to shower last night before I got in bed. Once I was up though I made my way to the kitchen and started cooking one of my favorite breakfasts for the King, Maddox that is. I suppose I could start referring to him by his name, even if it is just in my head. With that I started making the gravy for my sausage gravy and put the biscuits in the oven. Once those were finished I would start making eggs and bacon. Not everyone needed a side of bacon with their sausage gravy and biscuits but I figured Lycans probably liked a lot of protein. After everything was finished, I plated the breakfast and was about to bring it to Maddox’s room when he came into the kitchen, followed closely by his chosen mate.
“Hi,” she said to me, sticking her hand out for me to shake, “I’m Kara, it’s nice to meet you.” And the thing was, she genuinely sounded like she meant it. I had met many Alpha’s and Luna’s as an Omega that lived and worked in the packhouse. Most of them talked down to mean, if they paid me any attention at all. But Kara actually seemed pleasant.
“Oh, I’m Lucy, it’s nice to meet you,” I said after I recovered myself.
“Likewise, did you make whatever smells so delicious in here?”
Crap, I couldn’t very well tell her I made it for her mate, or could I? “I did, I made it for the King. It’s sausage gravy and biscuits, eggs, and bacon. I’m sorry,” I added quickly, “I would have made something for you if I had known you would be coming down, I just knew I had to make a special plate for him yesterday and I thought I should do the same this morning.”
“Oh that’s so sweet of you, really, and don’t worry about it at all. I’m not as particular as this stubborn ole’ mule,” freaking crap, she was as nice as she seemed. Maddox still hadn’t said anything to me though, and he was looking at the breakfast I was holding like it was a bomb about to go off. “Why don’t you start eating while I go get a plate from the dining hall,” Kara told Maddox.
“Oh no, you don’t have to do that,” I told her “I’ll get you something.”
“Nonsense, you’re not my servant and I have two perfectly capable legs. I’ll go get it.” She left and it was just me and Maddox.
“I didn’t ask you to make this,” he hissed at me before taking the plate and throwing it into the garbage can. This Lycan was freaking infuriating.
“Well you know what, I made that to make-up for our disastrous encounter last night and if you don’t want it that’s fine but you do not have to be such a, such a, such a freaking asshole about it!” I yelled before throwing my hand over my mouth and stumbling backwards towards the kitchen door. I just yelled at Maddox the future Lycan King which he has made clear is a big no-no. I turned and ran out of the packhouse before he could say anything.
