Maddox POV
I storm out of the hospital wing and head straight for my room. I can’t believe Kara is having Lucy stay here until the ceremony, we hadn’t even picked a new date so I had no idea how long she would end up being here for now. I knew the longer I was around her the more likely it would be that I would slip up, or she would, and her status as my mate would become known. I couldn’t risk that happening not when we might be on the cusp of a war and I needed the strongest allies by my side. I get in the shower hoping to wash the thoughts of her down the drain. But I can’t stop thinking about her, about kissing her and how her lips felt.
I shouldn’t have done that, I should have left as soon as the doctor said she was fine, why the f***k did I stay? As I’m thinking about her I can’t help but wonder how much she is going to end up remembering about what happened. I hope to the Goddess it’s nothing but I have a feeling she’ll at least remember bits of it given how she kept saying she felt like the memories were there and just out of reach. Great, now I’m concerned about how she’ll be able to handle it when those memories sneak up on her, and feeling an overwhelming urge to figure out how I could help her. I’m still thinking about it when I step out of the shower and head into my room to find Kara waiting for me on my bed, in nothing but her underwear.
“Kara, I’m really not in the mood right now,” it wasn’t a lie, I really wasn’t in the mood for her. I hadn’t been since I first laid eyes on Lucy, unfortunately that wasn’t normal for me and she was going to start to suspect something soon.
“Seriously Maddox, I’m literally offering myself to you on a silver platter and you don’t want me? What the hell has gotten into you lately?”
“I don’t know Kara, maybe this unknown threat potentially poised to destroy our world as we know it. Maybe it’s the fact that I’ve had to postpone my accession to the throne, or maybe it’s the fact that my Beta and I almost witnessed one pack member r.aping another last night. Take your pick.”
“Ugh, whatever,” she says rolling her eyes and jumping up off the bed, grabbing her robe as she heads to her room. “You better not be screwing around on me Maddox,” she says before reaching for her door, and in a tone Leo doesn’t like, and he makes it known.
“Are you threatening me?” Leo growls out at her, forcing her to bow her head.
“N-no, I didn’t mean it like that.”
“I think you did,” he tells her, “speak to me like that again and it will be the last thing you do, am I clear?”
“Yes Leo, I’m sorry.” She practically runs to her room and Leo gives me full control back. What the hell kind of comment was that? She’s never questioned me like that before, I suppose not sleeping with her for a few days has already made her suspicious.
“I don’t like her,” he growls, “she cannot speak to us like that. And did you see how she submitted to us? She will never be our equal, not like Lucy would.”
“Drop it Leo, you know why we have to do this.”
I get dressed and head to my father’s office we need to discuss what happened last night as well as where we stand with our current threat. Once I get there I stroll in, fairly certain he isn’t a meeting right now. “Please come in, make yourself at home,” he says sarcastically.
“Thanks,” I respond and he scoffs at me.
“Are you here for a particular reason or just to annoy me?”
“I’m here for two reasons actually. The first is to check in on our situation with this Proteus guy. I’m meeting tomorrow with the pack historian and have meetings set up for next week with the other historians of the packs he demolished.”
“That’s great son. I haven’t heard much else but I’m not sure that’s good because our scouts should have something to report.”
“Wait, do you mean they’re saying all’s quiet, or that you literally haven’t heard from them.”
“The latter, I know sometimes they go radio silent for a reason so I will give them a few more days then send out trackers.”
“Okay, let me know if you need anything from me on that front.”
“I will, now what was the other thing you needed to talk to me about?”
“Our cook, Dan.”
“What about him?”
“He’s in the dungeons.”
“And why is that?”
“Chad and I went out last night, some of the pack members were at the same bar. He was going to ask one of them to dance when he noticed she had disappeared and Dan had as well, but he had seen the girl stumbling around and got a bad feeling. We went to find them and he had her in a locked room passed out.”
“And what was he doing with her in this locked room?” My father had now given me his undivided attention and the calmness in his voice might be mistaken for apathy by some, but I knew better, he was pissed.
“I think you know, we managed to stop him before he could do anything. He had her mostly undressed and was in the process of unbuttoning his pants. She’s in the hospital for the rest of the day because he dosed her with wolfsbane and GHB. It’s how he was able to get her unconscious.”
My father steepled his fingers in front of his face and looked over them at me, “and what do you think his punishment should be?”
“Death,” I answer instantly, “we need to make an example out of him, make sure our pack members know they are safe. Not only from s****l assault but from being dosed with wolfsbane so they can be controlled.”
“I agree, I would have perhaps settled on banishment if he hadn’t drugged her as well but that puts his offense in a whole other category. Inform the warriors in the dungeon, he will be executed in two days time.”
“Thank you father, I’ll pass along our decision.”
“I’ll be seeing you later then.”
After leaving my father’s office I find Chad and let him know how Lucy is doing and what Dan’s punishment is, then we go to training and afterwards I head to my office. I stay in there until almost midnight hoping that if I keep myself busy I’ll keep my thoughts off of Lucy. It doesn’t work though, and I find myself headed towards her room once I’m done for the day. I stand outside her room for a moment debating whether or not I should go in when I hear a whimper on the other side of the door. I fling the door open and storm in but find Lucy in there alone. She’s lying in her bed, curled up in a ball crying in her sleep. She seems to be having a nightmare and against my better judgement I slip into bed next to her. I pull her into me and she nuzzles into my chest.
“It’s okay my mate, you’re okay now. I won’t let anything happen to you.” I whisper soothing words in her ear as I stroke her back and after about ten minutes she settles down and tries to burrow even closer to me. I don’t intend to fall asleep with her but I do, only waking when I feel her struggling to get out of my arms.
“Stop moving,” I finally grit out when she almost knees me right in the d.ick.
