~CHAPTER ONE Alessia stood in front of the large windows, her hands clutched together as she watched the rain pouring down. "I hope it does not rain tomorrow." Alessia announced. "Even if it rains, the wedding is not happening outside." Andrea, Alessia's sister said. Alessia turned around to look at her sister who was sitting at the edge of the bed. "I know. I can't help but feel nervous." It was also Alessia's birthday tomorrow. Alessia expected a word of encouragement from her sister but none came. She was used to their strained relationship already. Since Ariana, their mother died, they drifted farther apart. Before Alessia could speak, Victoria strolled into the room. Victoria was their step mother. "Alessia, I remember telling you to get some sleep!" Victoria reprimanded. Alessia shook her head solemnly. "I can not sleep yet. I am waiting for papa." Alessia needed to see her father before she went to bed. He promised to speak to her today. There would be no time to speak to him tomorrow. Victoria frowned, her slim hands placed firmly on her hips. "You would do well to do as I say! Are you deaf?" Alessia ignored Victoria's insults. This would not be the first time. Andrea scoffed. "Alessia, you do not have to milk all the attention for yourself every single time!" Alessia was stunned. "How am I milking the attention for myself?" Andrea stood up. "You want to be talked about all the time! That's the only reason for your unnecessary rebellion!" Alessia felt like a bucket of cold water had been thrown to her face. She never expected such words from her own sister. Sure, they had their misunderstandings, but none of it had gone this far. "I have every right to stay awake if I want to! I want to see papa!" Alessia retorted. Andrea scoffed. "you should grow up a little. You are no longer papa's pet. You are getting married tomorrow..." "That marriage would only happen if she looks like a human being!" Victoria interjected. "Do you want to wake up with bags under your eyes?" Alessia could not believe her ears. So all these fuss was just because Victoria did not want her to have bags under her eyes? "Having bags under my eyes does not make me inhumane." Victoria laughed mockingly. "You seem to forget who you would be getting married to." Alessia looked away because her heart was heavy. Victoria just reminded her that her faith was going to be tied to a total stranger tomorrow. Emiliano Russo, that is the name of the man Alessia would be bound to. Victoria shook her head in disapproval and gave Alessia a hard look. "You would be getting married to the don of the Chicago outfit. You are lucky enough as it is, don't jinx it!" Alessia was aware that Victoria could not wait to get her out of the house. "Please, make it clear to her. I do not even know why papa thought she would be the best choice for Emiliano." Andrea commented. Alessia did not say a word to anyone of them. She was never one who cared to defend herself. Victoria scoffed. "Morani made a big mistake. Alessia is too quiet and slow witted. Emiliano would eat her alive." Victoria's words felt like glass piercing into Alessia's skin. She already had enough for the night. "You both may leave. I will go to sleep once I have spoken to papa." Alessia informed them solemnly. Victoria was about to snap at Alessia when the sound of a gunshot was heard. Another gunshot followed and soon it became difficult to count. Victoria and Andrea took refuge under the bed but Alessia was too stunned to move. "Are you crazy, b***h? You want to get shot so that papa would blame us?" Andrea snapped at Alessia from her hidden spot under the bed. Alessia ignored her sister's rants and focused on the sudden quiet that surrounded the mansion. The gunshots were over. Alessia could feel the sudden bile rising in her throat. She was worried. Just as Alessia dared make her way to the door, two of her maids came rushing into the room. Alessia stumbled back in shock and ended up on the floor. One of the maids wasted no time before speaking. "Y-you need to c...ome downs...tairs... Madam!" Alessia sprinted up from her spot on the floor without a second thought. She did not know why she felt the sudden urgency to see what was downstairs. Immediately she sprinted down the stairs, a guard spotted her. "Are you crazy? Stop her!" The guard instructed one of the maids. Alessia was overpowered by three maids in the blink of an eye. Alessia could see the door. There were people gathered at the door. She needed to see what had caught their attention. "Let me go!" Alessia yelled. None of the maids budged so she bit their hands and sprinted for the door. Alessia did not care who stood in front of her. She pushed every body standing in her way till she got past the crowd. She did not know what she expected to see when she finally got past the crowd, but none of her imaginations prepared her for the sight that laid in front of her. There was a body... A body covered in a pool of blood. The clothes were soaked in red. Alessia moved closer, trying to identify the body. That was when her world crumbled in front of her. The body had no head but she knew... She could recognize those hands from a mile away. "Papa!" Alessia screamed on top of her lungs. She fell to her feet and gathered the lifeless body in her hands. Tears pooled out of her eyes as she screamed on top of her lungs. She caught sight of a note placed on his bleeding neck. With a trembling hands, Alessia grabbed it and read it out loud. ~Happy Birthday, Tesoro.
