CHAPTER ONE
The Devil's Offer The letter arrived on a Tuesday, which Elara had always believed was the cruelest day of the week. People cursed Mondays. But it was Tuesday that was truly merciless. Tuesday looked you in the eye, let you believe you had survived the worst, and then stabbed you clean while you weren't looking. She read it once. Then again. Then a third time, as though the words might rearrange themselves into something less catastrophic if she just gave them enough chances. They didn't. Then she set it down on her desk, walked to the window of her Midtown office and stared at the Manhattan skyline like it owed her an apology. Foxley Atelier. Hostile acquisition. Seventy two hours. "Elara." Theron called as he entered the office holding two coffees, because he knew when things were bad before she had to say them out loud. "I heard from the lawyers." "Then you already know." She turned from the window. "Seventy two hours, Theron." "I know." He crossed the room and handed her the coffee. "Six years of work." She scanned the office from the sketches on her wall, the samples on the racks, the framed cover of Vogue from two years ago with her name in the corner and doing the math on how fast it could all be dismantled. Fast, was the answer. Horrifyingly fast. She sighed. And then Theron slid a piece of paper across her desk. "Sit down." Pointing at the paper. She didn't sit. Elara Foxley hadn't survived building a company from a tiny studio apartment and a maxed out credit card by sitting down when things go hard. "Talk.” "Zaire Valecrest". She stared at it. Then she looked up at Theron. “Absolutely not.” “He is the only one that has the capital and the …” “He’s been trying to get his hands on this company for more than two years.” She pushed the paper back.” Giving him a stake to save us from a hostile takeover is like asking a wolf to guard a lamb pen.” “It's asking a bigger wolf to scare off the smaller ones.” Theron leaned forward. “I've done the research. He is looking for something specific right now, a public image play. Something to do with a government deal. He needs something from us too. That means we have leverage, Elara. Real leverage.” She picked up the paper again. Zaire Valecrest. She'd never met him in person but she knew the name the way everyone knew it like a weather warning. Cold, ruthless, brilliant in the way that left wreckage behind it. The kind of man who looked at companies like chess pieces and people like variables in an equation he'd already solved. She'd spent two years making sure Foxley Atelier stayed off his radar. Apparently she hadn't succeeded. “Set up a meeting.” She finally said, her voice flat. “But I'm not agreeing to anything.” “Of course not.” Theron smiled. She looked back at the skyline. “Seventy two hours.” The cruelest day of the week had only just begun.
