The Unseen Horizon
High above the Earth, Themis gazed at her reflection on the glossy surface of her phone's camera. The deep bags under her dark brown eyes bore testimony to countless nights spent chasing the perfect shot. Long, wavy brown hair framed her face, cascading gently over her shoulders. She was tall and carried herself with a certain confidence, despite the lingering traces of exhaustion. Her figure was soft, a reflection of her love for life's little indulgences.
As she sat on the plane, en route from London to Houston, she couldn't help but feel a buzz of excitement mixed with fatigue. The upcoming shoot for a perfume company deep within the heart of the Texan forest loomed on her mind. She mentally reviewed her checklist - batteries, lenses, and all the small details that ensured her camera would be ready for the task ahead.
The forest held a certain allure, filled with secrets and stories waiting to be captured. Her thoughts swirled with images of the untamed beauty of the wilderness and the enchanting fragrances that awaited her. Themis had an uncanny ability to perceive the world through her lens, transcending the ordinary and making the mundane extraordinary.
Yet, amidst the anticipation of her work, her mind wandered to the people around her. Her fellow passengers, some chatting excitedly while others slept, formed a curious backdrop to her musings. The question of love fluttered through her thoughts. Would she ever find that profound connection, that every book, movie and tik tok she was watching was talking about?
The vast horizon beckoned, promising new experiences, and Themis couldn't help but wonder if it would also lead her to the love she yearned for.
As Themis continued to stare out the airplane window, she began counting the months she’d been away from her home in Italy, retracing her steps from one shooting assignment to another. Six months had slipped through her fingers like grains of sand, leaving her with a sense of disconnection that went beyond the miles she had traveled.
Her struggle with depression had become increasingly pronounced during this extended absence. She couldn’t help but think of her therapist’s last words during their final session before her departure. It had been a conversation that revolved around self-love, a concept that felt elusive and undefined to her.
She pondered her therapist’s voice, its gentle cadence, and the words that had floated in the air like distant echoes. The essence of the conversation had been about finding love within herself, nurturing her spirit, and understanding that her happiness couldn’t solely rely on external adventures or the pursuit of her career.
As the plane descended, Themis couldn't escape the overwhelming sensation of loneliness that had been gnawing at her. A sense of solitude had seeped into her life like a shadow she couldn't shake, and she knew that something had to change. Her travels and the pursuit of her career had taken precedence for so long that she'd inadvertently distanced herself from friends, from people who might offer more than that. She was just jumping from one flight to another, dealing with impossible clients and working her ass off like a donkey. That was her life. She only had her father and a couple of friends as positive presence in her life.
As the plane touched down and taxied to a halt, the abrupt jolt shook her from her thoughts. She gathered her equipment and belongings, and wearily scanned the bustling airport for the driver who had been arranged to pick her up. The man stood some distance away, an air of discomfort hanging about him, though Themis couldn't quite put her finger on the source of his unease.
Without further ado, she approached the driver, acknowledging the fatigue that clung to her like a heavy shroud. The car he had brought was far from what she had expected, but weariness tempered her reaction. Without a word of complaint, she climbed into the vehicle.
The driver, with very short blonde hair that seemed to almost glisten in the sunlight, had an air of ruggedness about him. His features were chiseled, and a broad, determined jawline framed his face. However, what immediately drew one’s attention was the prominent scar that ran across his chin, a memento of a past encounter with adversity.
"Hello," Themis greeted the driver, her tone polite but fatigued. "I hope you've been informed about the shooting location."
The driver, seemingly informed, nodded and offered a brief, "Yes, ma'am, I know the way."
As the car set off towards their destination in the Piney Woods National Forest, Themis gazed out the window, already planning to visit the site before heading to her hotel. Piney Woods was known for its enchanting beauty and the fragrance of pine that lingered in the air.
Exhaustion weighed heavily on Themis as the car carried her through the scenic landscapes of the Piney Woods National Forest. The rhythmic hum of the engine and the gentle sway of the vehicle soon lulled her into a deep, albeit restless sleep.
Her slumber was abruptly shattered by the deafening crash of metal against wood, followed by the sensation of jolting, twisted wreckage. She jolted awake, heart pounding, disoriented, and struggling to comprehend what had just occurred.
In the confusion, Themis's instinct for self-preservation kicked in. She managed to fumble with the door and wrenched it open, tumbling out of the mangled car and onto the forested ground.
As she staggered to her feet, fear gripped her heart. The car's collision had attracted the attention of a massive, shadowy presence that circled the wreckage. Its eyes gleamed with a predatory glint, and her breath caught in her throat as she realized it was a creature much larger and more primal than any she'd ever encountered.
Before panic could fully engulf her, a sudden, almost surreal intervention occurred. Out of the dense underbrush emerged a young girl, no older than 10 or 12, with wide, innocent eyes and a bright, ethereal presence. She seemed to appear out of nowhere, and before Themis could react, the girl had taken her hand.
With urgency, the young girl led Themis away from the wreckage, their footsteps pounding on the forest floor, fleeing from the enigmatic creature that continued to circle the car. The adrenaline coursing through Themis's veins matched the rapid pace of her heart as they raced further into the depths of the Piney Woods National Forest, uncertainty and the unknown awaiting them with every step.
