Chapter 4After the main meal of the day which the whole household ate together, Gregory helped old Master Edward upstairs and settled him in his comfortable chair by the fire. Once the elderly gentleman was dozing, Gregory was free to descend to the ground floor of the house to find that the dining hall was empty and the kitchen was quiet. Sneaking into the larder, Gregory cut a generous slice of pigeon pie together with another of cheese, wrapped them in a spare napkin, and tucked the parcel under his arm. He put a couple of apples in his pockets, and coming back into the deserted kitchen, he snagged a fresh pot of ale from among the rows on the table.
