Chapter 5Despite his confident words to Jehan, Gregory was a bundle of nerves as he departed Bishopgate for Gracechurch Street. The closer he got to the river, the more keyed up he became, his mind churning at all that could go awry. When he stepped onto the famous London Bridge, cluttered with people, houses, and shops, Gregory thought bracingly, I’m halfway there. Everything is going to plan so far. He tried to appear like any jaunty serving man with a few coins in his purse and a free evening ahead of him. But an attempt at carefree whistling died on his lips as he saw the spiked heads decorating the sides of the bridge; a dire warning to all who dared to oppose the might of the state.
