Chapter 6Gregory decided to approach the barn before the household was summoned for supper. He couldn’t risk the light of a candle showing in a deserted outhouse without rousing curiosity, so he took the opportunity to meet with Jehan before full dark. On his way, Gregory sneaked into the kitchen unnoticed and from the selection of the food laid out in readiness, he took a couple of slices of cold meat and a hunk of bread for Jehan, to go along with his good tidings.
They sat in the upper storey of the barn, Jehan eating hungrily, while Gregory told him of his fruitful venture.
“It should be no problem getting you to the dock so early,” Gregory said. “Your uncle said he’d be able to keep you out of sight for the day before heading downriver the following morning.”
