Chapter 1
The moonlight burned like it wanted me dead from the start. I stood in the middle of the clearing with my heart hammering so hard I thought it might crack my ribs before the shift even began. The entire Voss Pack had gathered under the full moon for the Ascension Ceremony, their eyes all locked on me. Twenty two years old and still unshifted until tonight. Late bloomer they called it. I called it a curse. " Nyra Vale, step forward," Elder Thorne's voice boomed across the circle. His face looked carved from stone in the firelight. "The moon calls. Do not fight it." I swallowed hard and nodded. My hands shook as I dropped my cloak to the ground. The cold night air bit my skin. People whispered around me. I caught snippets. "Outer territory trash. Why is she even here?" "Bet she shifts into something weak." I ignored them. I had to. This was my only chance to prove I belonged. The first crack hit my spine like lightning. I gasped and fell to my knees. Pain exploded through every bone. My muscles tore and rebuilt themselves in seconds. Fur rippled across my arms, silver white and glowing under the moon. I wanted to scream but nothing came out except a low growl. When it ended I stood on four legs, stronger than I had ever felt. The pack went quiet. Really quiet. "Look at that coat," someone muttered. "Never seen silver like that." Then my eyes found him. Kael Voss stood on the raised dais like he owned the night itself. Tall, broad shouldered, black hair falling across his forehead. Those amber eyes locked onto mine and everything inside me pulled tight. Mate. The word hit like a brand. This was supposed to be the greatest moment of my life. The golden bond everyone dreamed about. Instead fire ripped across my chest. I yelped and collapsed, rolling in the dirt. The pain was worse than the shift. Something burned into my skin right above my heart. I looked down and saw it forming. A black crescent moon, edges sharp as blades, with crimson veins spreading out like cracks in ice. The Moon Goddess spoke directly into my skull, cold and ancient. "One soul will ascend. The other must fall." I shifted back to human form without meaning to, clutching at the mark. My fingers came away wet with blood. "What is this?" I shouted, voice raw. "What the hell is happening to me?" Elder Thorne stepped closer, eyes wide with horror. "The Deathmark. Gods help us. The prophecy has chosen." Chaos ripped through the pack like wildfire. "Curse bringer!" a woman screamed from the crowd. "Kill her before she destroys us all!" another voice yelled. I pushed myself up on shaky legs, still naked from the shift, blood trickling down my chest. "I didn't do anything! This isn't my fault!" Kael jumped down from the dais. His presence hit like a storm. Power rolled off him in waves. His wolf was right at the surface, eyes glowing pure amber. For a second I thought he might protect me. Then his face hardened. "Council," he called out, voice deep and commanding. "What are your orders?" Elder Mara, the oldest of them, rose on shaky legs. "The prophecy is clear, Kael Voss. You are fated to become the strongest Alpha in centuries. But only if you kill your mate. Do it before the next full moon or the bond will destroy you both." The crowd roared in approval. Some people actually cheered. I backed up, heart pounding. "You can't be serious. This is insane! I just shifted for the first time and now you want me dead?" Kael's jaw clenched. He looked at me like I was both the answer to every prayer and the worst nightmare he had ever had. "I didn't ask for this either, Nyra." My name in his mouth sent another jolt through the mark. I winced. "Then tell them to stop!" I snapped. "You're the future Alpha. Make them listen!" He took one step toward me. The bond pulled between us like a live wire. I could feel his confusion, his rage, and something darker underneath. Hunger. "Take her down," Elder Thorne ordered. "Before she runs." Hunters raised their rifles. The clicks of safeties coming off echoed through the clearing. I didn't wait. I turned and ran. My bare feet pounded against the forest floor as I bolted into the ancient trees. Branches whipped my face and arms. Howls rose behind me. Gunshots cracked through the night. One bullet grazed my shoulder and I cried out but kept moving. "Stop her!" someone shouted. "Don't let the curse escape!" My lungs burned. The Deathmark throbbed with every heartbeat, sending fresh waves of pain through my body. I could feel Kael back there. Not just hearing the shouts. Actually feel him. Like a shadow in my mind watching me run. I crashed through a thicket and stumbled into a small clearing. My legs gave out against an old oak tree. I slid down the trunk, gasping for air, blood and sweat mixing on my skin. That's when his voice pushed into my head for the first time. Deep. Rough. Deadly. "Run faster... or I'll have to kill you myself." I jerked upright, eyes wide. "Get out of my head!" I whispered fiercely. "Stay away from me, Kael Voss!" No answer came. But I felt him smirk somehow. Like he enjoyed the chase already. Footsteps approached from the shadows. Not the heavy boots of pack hunters. These were softer. Stealthy. I tensed, ready to run again even though my body screamed no. Three figures stepped into the moonlight. Rogue wolves. Their clothes were torn and dirty but their eyes glowed with something I had never seen directed at me before. Reverence. The tallest one dropped to his knees first. The others followed. "The Devourer has come," he whispered, voice thick with emotion. "We've waited so long for you, Nyra Vale." I stared at them, chest heaving. "What did you just call me? Who are you people?" The woman beside him smiled, sharp teeth flashing. "The one who will end the false Alphas. The Moon Goddess marked you true. We serve the real power. We serve you." Another gunshot sounded in the distance. Closer this time. I pushed myself up slowly, using the tree for support. The Deathmark still burned but something else stirred beneath it now. Something ancient and hungry that liked the way these rogues looked at me. "Prove it," I said, voice steadier than I felt. "If you're really on my side, get me out of here before Kael and his hunters tear me apart." The leader stood and offered his hand. "With pleasure, Devourer. The real war begins tonight." I took his hand, heart racing with equal parts terror and strange excitement. The forest around us seemed to hold its breath as more howls filled the night. Whatever came next, one thing was certain. I wasn't dying tonight. Not if I had anything to say about it.
