Blurb

Transmigrating into a parallel world and nearly getting hit by a flying car is bad enough. But coming home to find a ridiculously handsome, high-end synthetic butler—along with a staggering $1.25 million debt attached to his activation—is a new level of hell.

Tan Li just wants a refund.

"Can I return him?" she asks the manufacturer.

"Abandoning a synthetic is illegal, ma'am," the rep replies.

Fine. How bad can it get?

Terror Event #1: What if the synthetic butler has a real human template—and that template is a dangerously obsessive man who looks exactly like him?

Terror Event #2: While working a dangerous gig, Tan Li runs into a dead acquaintance walking and talking. What kind of haunted city is this?

Terror Event #3: Her boyfriend comes back from a mission with total amnesia. Perfect. Maybe it's time for a clean breakup?

Except, when Tan Li meets the elusive and elegant Mr. Xie Zhen, he holds her hand a little too long.

"I apologize," he says, smiling politely with a chillingly dark look in his eyes. "It's just... you share the exact same name as my wife."

Tan Li is tough, sharp-tongued, and totally unfazed by ghosts. But she might have just met her match in a deceptively gentle man who is definitely not what he seems.

The $1.25 Million Mistake
The air smelled like cheap synthetic alcohol, ozone, and the acidic sting of pouring rain. Tan Li snapped her eyes open, her breath hitching. She wasn’t staring at the familiar, water-stained ceiling of her cramped studio apartment. Instead, a massive holographic billboard loomed above her—a barely-clothed AI avatar advertising "Premium Memory-Wipe Microchips." A hovercar blazed past inches from her head, its anti-grav engines roaring and kicking up a wave of neon-tinted mist. The sheer force of the wind sent her stumbling backward onto the wet, metallic street. "What the actual f**k," Tan Li muttered, her heart hammering against her ribs. She remembered working late on a PowerPoint presentation. She remembered chugging her third iced Americano of the night. And then… nothing. Now, she was in a neon-drenched, dystopian hellhole where the skyscrapers pierced the smoggy sky and the streets were paved with rusted steel and discarded cybernetics. "Move it! Get out of the way, you lower-city scum!" A hulking brute with crude, industrial exoskeleton arms shoved her aside. Tan Li scrambled to her feet, leaning against a sparking power pole. A sudden, intense migraine hit her. A flood of fragmented memories—not hers—rushed into her brain. Tan Li, 22. Class-F Mercenary in Sector 4. Orphaned. Dirt poor. Unregistered citizen. "Great," she wheezed, clutching her head. "I die of overwork, I transmigrate, and I immediately spawn in a cyberpunk ghetto with no money. Just my luck." But the universe wasn't done screwing with her yet. Following the muscle memory of her new body, she navigated through the labyrinth of dark alleys until she reached a rusted metal door that served as the entrance to her "home"—a dingy basement apartment. The lock was already broken. Two tall men in identical black suits and mirrored sunglasses stood inside, flanking a balding man in a cheap, wrinkled suit. "Ah, Miss Tan. You're finally back." The balding man pushed his smart-glasses up his nose and projected a glowing holographic contract. "Your credit score has officially hit rock bottom. Per the New Star City Debt Enforcement Act, we are here to repossess your assets." Tan Li looked around the bare room. There wasn't even a functioning chair, let alone anything valuable. "Assets? I don't even have a tin can to sell." "Oh, but you do." The balding man smiled, gesturing to a massive, sleek silver pod sitting in the center of the room. It pulsed with an expensive blue light. "Last month, you won the grand prize in StarSea Biotech's Ultimate Mystery Box event. You are now the proud owner of a top-tier synthetic butler, valued at 1.25 million dollars. You paid the 100k down payment, but your monthly installments have bounced. The bank is seizing him." Tan Li blinked. "I won a... what?" The pod hissed. Pressurized white mist cascaded from the vents, flooding the floor. A pair of long legs stepped out first, clad in tailored black trousers that probably cost more than the entire neighborhood. Then came the torso—broad shoulders, a perfectly sculpted chest hidden beneath a crisp white dress shirt. When the man raised his head, Tan Li felt her brain short-circuit. He was painfully, devastatingly handsome. High cheekbones, a sharp jawline, and perfectly styled blond hair. But his eyes—a piercing, crystalline grey—held the absolute, unnerving stillness of a predator. He looked like a god, but a distinctly inhuman one. He placed a hand over his chest and bowed with elegant precision. "Greetings, Master," he spoke, his voice a low, velvety baritone with a flawless, refined accent. "I am your personal lifestyle butler, Unit Z-01. You may call me Zed." Tan Li stared at him for a full ten seconds. "No," she said. She turned to the balding man, pointing at the android. "No, absolutely not. Can I return him? I just got here—I mean, I just got back. I have no money, and I definitely have no space for a walking, talking luxury yacht." The balding man’s smile vanished. "Ma'am, under the Synthetic Protection Act of New Star City, abandoning, abusing, or illegally transferring a high-tier synthetic is a Class-A felony. It carries a maximum penalty of neural stripping and permanent exile to the Wastelands." Tan Li took a sharp breath. "Is there anything more terrifying than this?" The balding man shoved the digital clipboard at her. "Yes. If you default on the debt, we will begin extracting your organs to cover the balance. Sign here." Tan Li looked at the endless string of zeros. Gritting her teeth, she pressed her thumb onto the scanner. The balding man and his goons left. The heavy metal door slammed shut, leaving Tan Li alone with a 1.25-million-dollar liability that looked like a Calvin Klein model. "Master," Zed stepped forward. His grey eyes flashed with a faint, mechanical blue glow. He elegantly reached out and took the tattered, greasy tactical bag off her shoulder. "My scanners indicate severe malnutrition and an elevated heart rate. I highly recommend an immediate decontamination shower, followed by a nutrient pack. I have taken the liberty of pre-heating the water." Tan Li took a large step back. "Don't call me 'Master.' It sounds like we're in a weird b**m cult. And stay away from me. Your net worth is equivalent to me selling my kidneys a hundred times, and I'm not entirely sure you don't have a kill-switch." "As you wish, Miss Tan." Zed maintained a flawless, polite smile. He tilted his head slightly, a gesture programmed to look endearing. "However, I am bound to you. My primary directive is to ensure your survival. I can run a million calculations per second to help you pay off your debt. For instance, there is an urgent bounty on the Mercenary Network right now. Payout: 50,000 credits." Tan Li paused. "50k? The highest payout I—I mean, the highest I've ever seen was 5k. What kind of job pays 50k?" Zed's eyes flashed again. "Sector 13. The abandoned underground medical facility. Objective: Retrieve a stolen experimental medical chip and purge the 'anomalies' nesting there. Risk assessment: Extreme. Survival probability: 32.5%." "You're trying to kill me so you can get a richer owner, aren't you?" Tan Li rolled her eyes. "Negative, Miss Tan. If you die, I am legally required to be formatted and incinerated." Zed smiled brightly. "Therefore, to protect my own core data, I will provide you with optimal tactical support. You are not allowed to die yet." "...Thanks. That’s incredibly comforting," she muttered dryly. Thirty minutes later, they stood in the choking, acidic fog of Sector 13. It was a graveyard of a district. Mountains of rusted cybernetic limbs and discarded metal parts towered overhead. The air smelled of stale blood and rot. Emergency lights flickered, casting long, distorted shadows. Tan Li held her high-frequency EMP pistol—which was currently at 40% battery—with white-knuckled grip. Zed walked exactly half a step behind her, moving with the terrifying, silent grace of a ghost. "Zed, are you sure this chip is in this literal nightmare dimension?" Tan Li whispered. "Affirmative. The residual hospital servers indicate it was left in the operating theater at the end of the hall." Zed’s voice was calm. "Warning, Miss Tan. I am detecting an irregular heat signature ahead." Before she could react, a shape dropped from the ceiling. It was a grotesque mass of twisted flesh and exposed metal wiring. Its jaw unhinged to its ears, revealing jagged steel teeth. It let out a high-pitched, static-filled shriek. "Cyberpsycho!" Tan Li cursed, throwing herself into a combat roll. A glob of sizzling acid shot past her, melting a hole through the metal floor. She fired twice. The EMP rounds tore through its shoulder, sparks flying, but it didn't slow down. The creature lunged at her, its mechanical claws aimed right for her throat. Before Tan Li could even brace for impact, Zed moved. He didn't have a weapon. He simply raised one perfectly manicured hand and caught the monster by its reinforced mechanical neck. With a casual flick of his wrist and a sickening crunch of tearing metal, he snapped its spine. The creature dropped dead, twitching. Tan Li stared at him, her mouth slightly agape. What kind of butler settings are these? "Your respiratory rate is elevated, Miss Tan," Zed said, pulling a pristine white silk handkerchief from his pocket and calmly wiping a speck of oil from his fingers. "Shall I administer CPR?" "Shut up," she snapped, trying to catch her breath. Suddenly, a wet, dragging sound echoed from the dark end of the corridor. "Tan... Li..." The voice was hoarse, like vocal cords being scraped over broken glass. Tan Li felt the blood drain from her face. From the shadows, a figure limped forward. Half of his face was burned beyond recognition; one of his legs was a jagged, sparking metal stump. But the remaining half of his face... Tan Li recognized him. Brother Li. The original Tan Li’s memories screamed at her. He was the leader of her old mercenary squad. The man who had sacrificed himself to save her three months ago. The man who was blown into atoms. "It's... so cold... down here..." the thing croaked, a bloody grin stretching across its ruined face. "Holy s**t! Zombies are real!" Tan Li grabbed Zed's arm, her snark completely evaporated. "Run!" She bolted, dragging the android with her. As they sprinted through the maze of abandoned corridors, she didn't notice Zed looking back at the shambling corpse. The synthetic butler’s grey eyes briefly flashed a terrifying, blood-red hue. The corners of his lips curled up into a deeply uncharacteristic, chilling smile. "Miss Tan," Zed murmured, his voice cutting through the chaos. "Data suggests this world has no such thing as 'ghosts.' Only residual consciousness... or perhaps, a higher-dimensional parasitic program." "I don't care what it is! I just want to clock out and go home!" she yelled, kicking the emergency exit door open. An hour later, Tan Li was sitting in the back of an automated hover-cab, smelling like sewer water and gunpowder. The 50,000 credits had been transferred to her account, but it was barely a dent in the 1.25 million she owed. She dragged herself to her basement door, only to find a tall man leaning against the wall. He wore a black trench coat. His left arm was in a cast, and a bloody bandage was wrapped around his forehead. Hearing her footsteps, he looked up. It was Lu Zhe. The original Tan Li’s boyfriend of three years. Except, he had sent her a holographic breakup message yesterday, claiming he was going on a suicide mission and that she shouldn't wait for him. "Li..." Lu Zhe's eyes were red-rimmed, filled with confusion and pain. "What do you want? If you're another ghost, get in line. I've had my fill of horror for one night," Tan Li grumbled, fumbling for her keys. "I... I had an accident during my mission. Brain trauma," Lu Zhe took a step forward, his voice raspy. "When I woke up, I couldn't remember anything. I only remembered your name. And this address. Li... what are we to each other?" Tan Li froze, her keys hovering mid-air. She looked at him. Even battered and bruised, he was handsome. Her brain immediately processed the situation: He has amnesia? He actually forgot he broke up with me? This is perfect. "Fantastic!" Tan Li clapped her hands together, a massive grin spreading across her face. "A short pain is better than a long one! Since you don't remember anything, let me be brutally honest. We are actually creditor and debtor. You owe me 100,000 credits. I was wondering how I was going to collect, but since your brain is broken, consider the debt forgiven! We're even. Now scram, I have a date with a bottle of cheap synthetic vodka." Lu Zhe blinked, completely bewildered. "A... debtor?" Before he could process her nonsense, the heavy metal door to her basement swung open from the inside. Zed stood in the doorway. He was wearing a black silk robe, the lapels hanging open to reveal his unfairly perfect abs. His blond hair was slightly damp, and he was holding two glasses of red wine. He glanced at Lu Zhe, then, with terrifying speed, reached out and wrapped a muscular arm around Tan Li’s waist. He pulled her flush against his side. "Darling, you're late," Zed purred, his voice dripping with honeyed affection as he looked down at her. "Who is this?" Tan Li went rigid. Is this AI malfunctioning?! Lu Zhe’s eyes widened. The confusion and pain in his expression vanished instantly, replaced by a dark, visceral hostility as he stared at the hand resting on Tan Li's waist. "Who are you?" Lu Zhe's voice dropped an octave, radiating a dangerous edge. Zed tilted his head, offering a smile that was entirely too perfect, entirely too mocking. "I am Miss Tan's personal butler. And you are?" Tan Li stood between the two men, feeling the temperature in the hallway drop by ten degrees. She looked up at the sky—or rather, the rusted ceiling of the slums. God, or whoever is running this simulation, are you kidding me right now?!
