“What a prat of a teacher,” I muttered storming down the halls, I couldn’t be asked to stay and listen to that shithead again, instead I was gonna go find Flo and enlighten her more on the oh so lovely news. And yes, I was being sarcastic.
I held onto the strap of my bag tighter as I looked to the ground and continued to march down before coming straight to a stop the minute, I heard a soft sob cut through the silence. I looked up from the ground and took a step back unit I was right next to the girl’s bathroom.
Yep…I was defiantly NOT going crazy.
Frowning, I pushed the bathroom door open and slowly walked in looking around to see it empty with all the cubical doors shut…except for one right at the far end.
“Flo? Is that you?” Suddenly the sobs stopped and the whole bathroom was in silence. I’m taking that as a yes. “Hello? Are you gonna talk or what?”
“Go away.” She muttered her voice croaky as she sniffed.
I rolled my eyes annoyed as I walked down and dropped my bag to the ground before jumping up onto one of the sinks and began to swing my legs.
“Ya know, I’d love too but sadly, I can’t. I’m pretty much stuck with you.”
“What are you talking about?!” She asked opening the door and my eyes widened. Her mascara had run down her cheeks and she was paler than before. She didn’t even care about the shortness of her skirt or the way her hair was in a mess instead of slightly wavy around her shoulders…even her eyes looked miserable.
“Wow, you look like s**t!”
“Ugh, I hate you!” She screeched about to close the door before I burst into laughter and held my hands out.
“Wait! Wait! I’m sorry…it’s just…” I cut off biting down on my lip trying not to laugh again slightly glad that she didn’t slam the door shut but opened it wider and leaned against the side looking down almost breaking into tears again. “Anyway, what happened to you? Mr. Nickel didn’t like your lap dance?”
Her head snapped up; her eyes narrowed as she slammed the door closed behind her.
“No! In fact, it wasn’t that! You know not everyone goes through what you think they do! They’re not all…” She stammered trying to think of a word as her hands fluffed about in the air and her eyes twitched in annoyance, “PERFECT! I dunno! But you get what I mean!”
“Sure, ok keep your knickers on!” I shot back leaning back slightly shocked at the way she lost her temper a little.
“Anyway…what the hell are you doing here? You’re the last person I thought would come after me.” She said sniffing again as she went to the sink next to me and began washing her hands.
“Hey, don’t get all happy, I only came cause Mr. Nickel partnered us up for that stupid assignment,” I said groaning expecting her to have some reaction too but instead all she did was nod her head and continue to wash her hands as if I didn’t say anything at all. With my eyes wide I stared in horror at the girl. “Did you just hear what I said properly? Maybe I should repeat myself…MR NICKEL PARTNERED US-”
“I know. I heard you the first time.” She giggled lowly before switching the tap off and moving towards the hand dryer.
“And you’re ok with that?! I hate you…you hate me! It’s not NORMAL!” I yelled even louder but she just ignored it and placed her hands under the dryer allowing the loud rumbling sound to fill the bathroom as I continued to turn pale.
Finally, when the nose cut off, she turned to face me,
“I don’t like the idea but I’m not gonna sulk around about it when I know there’s nothing I can do and besides, you need that pass.”
“Damn right about that,” I muttered.
“So, guess you’re stuck with me but don’t even think about screwing up that A for me.”
“Dude…I need that A too or he’s gonna give me a U.” For the first time, I noticed how I hadn’t said anything mean to her yet in the space of a minute! “But I swear just work, no friendly chats cause I hate you,” I added not liking the niceness.
“Please like I’d ever be friends with you.” She scuffed and I jumped down from the sink and grabbed my bag.
“But really…did he really turn down your lap dance?” I asked a little curious as to why she was crying but knowing that wasn’t the reason though, it was the only way I was gonna find out, there was no way I was gonna sound nice to this girl!
“Drop it Dylan! There’s nothing to tell you, you’re just as bad.” She muttered and I suddenly dropped it noticing the waver in her voice, as much as I might dislike her…I couldn’t be asked to make her cry again, especially since my A was in her hands. “Wait a minute…you said sorry to me.”
“Huh?”
“Before in the bathroom, awe Dylan’s not such a bad girl after all.” I came to a sudden halt narrowing my eyes at her as she turned and smiled to herself knowing she won the ‘wind up Dylan’ contest.
“I really hate you.”
“Come on, let’s go you want that A or not?” Sighing and biting hard down on my lip again, I nodded and followed behind her towards the glass doors, we only had twenty minutes before school ended and I couldn’t be asked to wait for my sister, so we’d just walk home…together…ugh.
~~
“Hey, where’d Flo go?” Ronny asked walking into the kitchen as I threw myself down on the couch and turned the TV on.
“Oh, she went home, she’ll be over in like…” I looked up at the clock on the wall then back at the TV. “Ten minutes.”
“So, you two are suddenly hanging out?” She asked unscrewing the cap to her drink with a confused look on her face as she sat next to me and I dropped the remote to stare at her.
“Wow back up! No way! Mr. Nickel partnered me with her and if I don’t pass, he’s gonna U me.”
“SEE! Now I remember why I love teachers so much!” She yelled with a wide grin as she jumped to her feet and slapped a kiss on my forehead before walking up to her room.
“You’re the worse sister in the world!” I yelled looking at her.
“Yeah sure!” She yelled from her room before running back down. “Anyway, the house is yours I’m gonna go out.”
“Kay.”
“Hey, Lace is out there by the way.” My sister announced as she opened the front door and kept it open for Lace to walk in. I placed the remote on the table and sat legs crossed on the couch with a smile on as Lace walked in closing the door and for a moment. I was kinda happy that Flo had a spare key. Only because our parents thought it would be wise for us to have keys to both houses.
Don’t ask why they’re weird.
“Hey!” She said smiling. Her dark brown eyes wide as she walked over with her long light brown hair tied up in a plat.
“Hey what’s up?” I asked watching as she sat nervously down. Lace used to be our neighbor before her parents moved away and now she only comes over once or twice a week. But today, there was something unusual about her. She looked worried suddenly, afraid to even smile like she did when she walked in.
Lace was always the innocent one, the timid little girl you could say.
“Hello…”
“Oh um…I just…um I kinda wanted to ask something.” She started nibbling on her bottom lip and I shifted to face her.
“What?”
“We’ve been friends for I dunno…a while right?” I nodded. “And nothing I asked would be weird right?”
“Well probably but that’s kinda the whole point. You’ve asked the weirdest questions in the past and hey look, nothing surprises me with you anymore.” Lace allowed a small laugh to leave her plump lips and she took a deep breath before looking up at me.
“I think I’m into a girl that I know.”
…
“Ok yeah….that surprised me,” I whispered a tiny bit in shock. Lace had never let on anything about being into girls EVER!
“See…that’s weird…” She looked back down; her cheeks tinted with red.
“Nah, just a surprise. Who cares?! Anyway, I don’t get…what’s the question?” I asked leaning one arm on the top of the couch and resting my head on my fist. Lace lightened up a little and shifted around on the couch to face me sitting the same way.
“Well… I dunno if I like her really cause…well…I’ve never kissed a girl and then yeah…that’s really it.”
“I forgot how you got straight to the point,” I muttered a little relieved how she didn’t really beat around the bush. She laughed nervously before she looked back up at me, her cheeks burning red again but this time a darker shade of red.
“And well…you’re like my best friend…and I trust you and everything and I was wondering if you would…um…” She cut off and I suddenly caught on to what she meant.
“Kiss you?”
“Yeah….” Ok now she had turned as red as a tomato but to be honest, it wasn’t that bad. I’m sixteen, the number of things I’ve been asked to do just doesn’t make this that bad. And it wouldn’t mean anything.
“Um…”
“It’s only so I can see if I actually like girls or not and you think I’m weird so I’m gonna go-” I saw the slight flicker of embarrassment in her eyes but not just that, she actually thought she may have just messed up our friendship over such a small question.
“Wow Lace sit down,” I reached over and grabbed her arm throwing her back down on the couch, “You don’t need to be like that, breathe. I’m not freaked, it’s fine.”
“But like…you never thought this and I just brought it on and you-” I cut her off finding it a little cute how panicked she got and at that moment…she kinda reminded me of Flo and how she fluffed her arms in the air.
“How long have you known me for?” I asked watching as her eyes wandered around the room confused at the cutoff, “Over five years. So Nah, this doesn’t mean anything to me. Like I’d lose you that quickly.” I smiled gratefully at the small smile that spread over her lips. “So…sure go ahead. Plus I just get to be your first girl kiss, that is pretty awesome. I got something to hold over your future wife . . . or husband.”
Lace’s eyes widened in shock.
“Really?!”
“Hey, just cause that was covered in a small joke…but yeah really.” Now, this is the part where I thought she would go slow but before I knew it, her lips had pressed gently to mine and both our eyes had shut after mine widened a little and as much as I was about to pull away…I didn’t.
“Dylan?” Now that was the key to both of us jumping up in shock and my face turning bright red as Flo stood in the doorway with her bag in her hands and her eyes wide.
“Oh um…hi…” Lace waved nervously before turning back to me. “Thanks, and I should get going.” Oh, now you run out. b***h. She hugged me quickly and rushed off leaving me standing there in complete and utter shock at the burst in.
“So-”
“It is NOT what you think!” I yelled moving towards the fridge and pulling out the bottle of coke not bothered to pour it into a glass but drowning it straight from the bottle in a slight rush of panic.
“Sure, come on Dylan there’s nothing wrong with being into girls.” Even though I knew Flo was kidding about trying to annoy me, it was working, and I was getting TOO wound up about it.
“Drop it Flo! It was nothing!”
“Ok wow breathe…I was just kidding.” She said taking a step back.
“Well then drop it!”
“Yeah but just so you know, by the way, you just got all huffy and puffy I’m guessing you’re confused.”
“Did you just not hear me?! And please like I’d discuss this with you!”
“Dylan I’m just-”
“I don’t care! Drop the bloody thing already!”
“What is your problem?!”
“You!”
“Well if you really weren’t you wouldn’t be getting into such a huff!”
“Oh God will you just shut up! It’s nothing, you’re making it into such a bloody-”
“Fine prove it.” And suddenly I went silence staring at her in confusion.
“What?” I asked placing the bottle down on the counter.
“If you’re really not confused about your sexuality prove it. Cause no one gets that wound up about that for no reason.”
“Are you dumb?” I asked before pushing myself away from the counter and making my way past her but the minute I walked around her she suddenly had grasped my arm and pulled me right around to face her as she sighed but before I could even say anything, her free hand had grasp of my cheek and her lips had pressed to mine.
Quickly my hands grasped her waist ready to push her away…except my eyes had already closed and her tongue was suddenly pressing against my bottom lip.
All feeling in my hands had gone numb and I was just standing there before my lips had suddenly begun to move against her, my whole body shivering as her hands loosened her grip on my arm and a light tingle broke free as her tongue moved against mine.
But the worse thing about this was…I wasn’t pulling away...
