My head felt very heavy as if a rock was placed on it as my pulse kept thudding in my skull. I slowly blinked my eyes to see if it would help calm my head. Then, I noticed that a warm hand was wrapped around my stomach. I tilted my head up as I turned to reach it and to kiss Rose’s forehead so that she would know that I was awake.
Only when I sat up did I see the wrong shape beside me. Cassandra lay half-covered on the bed, hair unkempt, her night dress pulled low. It felt like the world had stopped for a moment as I tried to understand what was going on. I yanked her hand away immediately and shot up to my feet. She stirred on the bed and began to blink lazily like someone who had been in a very deep sleep.
